Smoking out of the breather

The left valve cover is smoking out of the breather (left if you're standing in front of the truck)...what does that mean???

Sounds like blow by to me, youv'e got oil seeping by the rings in one or multiple cylinders. Hard to tell how serious but when It happened to me I pulled the motor apart and found a spot at the top perimeter of the piston where it must have detonated and warped the piston. Was pretty good detonation that went two rings deep.

sounds normal if you are just running breathers...try switching the breather over to the right side to see if its the same. :/

If engine is new rings probably have not seated yet if high mileage engine it would be blowby also if using a pcv if pcv gets stuck or plugged causes excessive crankcase pressure resulting in blowby and oil consumption . If its a small amount MRQiuck is right its normal when running just breathers . Run a leakdown test to diagnose if need be .

Yea its a high mileage 5.0 in my bronco....runs strong just smoking out of the breather...its hard to switch them around cuz the one sits right under the upper intake manifold such a pain in the ass...you'd think they would've sold me one that fit in smooth

high milage Ford + smokey blow by = normal if the Bronk runs good, I would not worry about it. When you start fowling spark plugs then it time to fix.

I was actually joking about swapping sides to see if its better but I'd just put a pcv valve on it and run it to a tee in the power booster hose or and un-used manifold vac port.

I agree with MRQuick on this run a pcv and also you can run a thicker oil 20w50 or ad some lucas oil additive but i wouldnt worry about it till it fouls plugs .

I ran a 351W that had the same problem for a very long time. It still ran strong, but had such bad blow by that it would push the dipstick out of the tube. I would highly recomend doing a compression test. that should give you some more insight as to whats going on.

With blow by and a high mileage engine you can perform all the tests you want but the end result is always the same . The engine has worn components and its time for a rebuild or at least ring and bearing kit so in my opinion it doesnt make sense to test when we already know what needs to be done .

Thanks for all the insight guys...yea shes got 305k on her but I just refuse to get rid of it....had it since I started driving and i've been keeping it alive...4x4 works awesome and it goes any and every where...even runs on half a quart of oil when I had an oil leak issue hah. Only ever had problems with the tranny but other then that she runs like a top...just keep changing the oil every 5000 and keep running it, I'm going to switch to the pcv valve and see what happens

305k you have gotten your use out of it and then some . Its difficult to justify pulling an engine that runs good just keep an eye on it and let us know when you hit 400k . Toyota has nothing on american iron ! OH WHAT A RECALL OOPS I MEANT OH WHAT A FEELING .
