My aftermarket rear has a taped hole on top of the rear end housing. Is that for a breather or just a fill hole? Can I plug it?

You need a breather so if you have another one usually on the d/s axle tube you can plug it otherwise put a breather fitting on it.

I dont know where to get one? That autoparts store where clueless.
All you need is a fitting on the housing and a hose leading to the chassis above the rear axle. You can add a small filter as well.

You'll need a remote breather... I tried just using a breather fitting on the housing, but was puking oil on hard right-handers.

ALL rear ends need a breather of some sort. Otherwise pressure will build up and you have leaking wheel seals in no time. A hose definitely works best on a car that is run hard.

I found a replacement vent for my 9" from Summit a while back. Can't seem to find it anymore. But I might not be searching for it properly. If I can find any info I'll update my post.
Go to Summit's page and do a search for "differential vent". You should find one that will work for ya.

These crank case vents from K&N work really well for things like this,

Like the other guys said, you have to have a breather somewhere. As you drive around, the oil will heat up and like many other things in this universe it will expand so pressure would build up in your axle until it finds the weakest point to exit, usually a seal. In that case, it will blow out of the seal and give you a really annoying leak
You can get the stuff you need to do this from any hardware store. Just go to the plumbing dept. That hole is prob 1/8npt (pipe thread). You can get a brass fitting with a hose barb end on it. Then pick up a length of tube to hook it to and you are all set
Here is a pic to show you. I did this to the transfer case in my truck. The tube is a sight tube so I can see the fluid level in it. The other barb is used for the breather

If you are planning on running the car HARD, get an overflow tank with a breather. When I was at the MMCC this summer, zipping around the road coarse the rear oil would get too hot after about 10 laps and start puking out the vent tube. I talked to some of the SCCA guys there and they said that will happen with some rears. Mine probably because of the locker was putting too much heat into it. I am having a small aluminum tank made as catch can for it so that don't happen again.

if the car is not driven hard put a thread x barb fitting in the rearend a piece of hose secured up to the body and install a pneumatic muffler on the end. http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/SPEEDAIRE-Exhaust-Muffler-1A326
