Good thing we all live in a place where we all have the freedom to choose what we want to do. Find something else to do! We only have ourselves to blame when we are stuck in a rut or in a hopeless job. Get your thoughts straight and maybe its time for a change.

Well, if it helps, I hate your friggin' job too. Oh, and if it's a corporate America type job, you can be sure that some protest group out there probably hates it too... so at least you're not alone in hating your job. :rolleyes5

Sorry to hear the job discontent, look around and find something you can deal with. I love my job, work as an operations shift team leader for an oil refinery, make good money and have time to learn fantastic things (this site, the net, etc.) while I am there for 12 hours a day.
And yes, dealing with the devil (oil) brings out the most in protestors, not to mention the potential strike every 3 years (union contract negotiations are always sad). That being said, I hope that we continually find oil reserves in areas we can control without using violence and aggressive tactics, but then the protestors will be forced to pick the least of the evils: fight for oil like in Iraq, or potentially pollute the Arctic and Canadian areas in order to reduce the dependence upon Middle Eastern oil (can't have neither). Of course other sources other than oil will come into play over the coming decades but that would suck for us too!

Well lets see, every time I jump in Dale Jr.'s car I get arrested, Ron Jeremy is still alive a kicking, and "they" say I'm too old to learn to fly jet fighters, Ok time to grow up....
Seriously I've come to the conclusion that I must be my own boss someday soon(after I had a job/career that I did enjoy, but got screwed) I'm kicking a few things around but it all takes money, which apparantly doesn't grow on trees. So for now I'm stuck in this hell while I get my sh*t together and figure out the best biz to open.... Would love to do something, anything that has to do with cars, I've thought about this alot and know enough to realize to be truly a success you must love it, even if its alittle.... So for now back to my 2 hour commute(each way) to my half a cubicle to make barely above minimum, and suck on it till I can tell them to all f***off...

We all work for ourselves , yet we forget that once we get comfortable in the mayhem. The name on your check is the person you work for. Otherwise they wouldn't even give you a check if you really worked for them (your company). When you start to look at it this way you start to see that it is your choice to stay at the job you have. What you have to do to keep your job is no different than if you owned your own company. You can also get a certain sense of pride if you look at it this way too.
I work for a company because it is easier for them to absorb the losses when they happen and I really like the benefits and less worry. The bottom line cost of being in business is so much these days that it is hard to see a profit that would equal wages and benefits sometimes no matter how hard you work.
I love my job, it's any mismanagement that I always have the problem with because they are messing with the future of my job . So if you don't want to create your own income by having your own company you will always be at your own mercy related to your skill level which can really suck sometimes for most people.
I have to only think of the heatreat plant to make me appreciate any other job I have ever had. The money was good but the work conditions were like hell literally.
Goodluck looking for a new job and may you be happier when you get it!!!!

I like my job, it easy, but the quality of life in my new location sux, and I'm just plain not happy here. No money to even pick up a wrench. So the wife and I are going back to FL where our cross country trip started. We're going back to our own home, (renting fing blows). Giving up good money, but the outcome is so close to the income, its like making minimum wage. Not easy to give up 4yrs, but I also want to do something different, I have a bsee in electronic engineering, and I dont even look ant any components anymore. I've come to that crossroad and have to decide on what to do next. Good luck on your decision. Oh I posted about this also, since my post count is so high https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/images/smilies/headscratch.gif search for my user name for my situation. Good luck. Only thing that doesn't change is change itself.

Love the work, but the politics and some of the people just make the job/career, that I could just not wait to get to work, seam somewhat meaningless now. How does this happen? This is the job I came to because I hated my previous one. This was the new job I came to and loved from the start for the first 6 years but for the past 4, it has begun to suck. Yes, thankfully I feel as though I am an asset here, but some days...

I don't love my job but I don't hate it either. At the end of the day....it's still work. Although I consider myself fortunate. Working at GM Design has it's benefits, I get to see all the future cars YEARS before anyone else does, and I get to play a part in their development. The new H3 that's hitting the roads in the next few months....take a look at the outside rear view mirrors....those are my mirrors. While surfacing them, I had to change the CSO data so much due to drag coeffecient errors that they no longer resembled the original model in the studio. They're practically my own design. Now when I see an H3 commercial I always say, "Hey...there's my mirrors". That's one of the perks of my job. However, working for this company you've got to understand that you are just a social security number to them. It's the executives, managers, and directors that get all the power, glory, fame and praise and all us 'little people' who get sh*t on when the company does bad. But that's the nature of this business...once you learn to deal with it, everything else falls into place. I'm not happy.....but I'm content. Maybe that's how GM wants me.

It sounds like you are basically unemployable. Welcome to the club. Start your own business. In the meantime, try to cheer up. Let go of that which is out of your control. Hard to do, but try.

It sounds like you are basically unemployable.
Ouch!, you really think so? Maybe your right. Like I said I did have a career that I liked very much, but lost everything because of office bs politics. So I've been forced to do whatever it takes to pay the bills, support the household, etc. which was fine for awile.... I can't speak for everyone but I would much rather endure the stress, headaches, hard work, etc, etc, for my benefit and not some corporation where I'm just a number. If you look back at history and all the successful Americans, you will see most have one thing in common, being business owners. You can't get rich working for someone else. I must say I'm a bit surprised at the response to my little rant, I guess I struck some sort or nerve... I'm very happy for those who like their jobs, I envy you, and for those who have their own business, I applaud and congatulate you on having the guts to follow your own path, and fulfill the American dream. I'm not complaining about my life, just my job which unfortunatly takes up a major portion of my life, and is a catalyst for progress. I must put my future and control back in my own hands, and not someone else whom I don't respect or like. If my venture/ventures are failures, I would be able to live with that easier. Thanks for everyone's words of encouragment and support..

I feel your pain...
I'm trying to make a career change myself, to be basically self-employed. Working for the man sucks. Who wants to spend most of their life making some rich SOB richer? The only purpose of my job is making money for someone that is already absurdly rich. I get to see none of the fruits of my labor, other than my not-so-spectacular salary.
Employees of corporate america are basically like livestock as far as I see it. We're referred to as 'resources', not as people. We all 'commute' every day like a big herd of livestock, corraled into cube farms for several hours a day. Then we all go back to our 'stables' in the suburbs, living in identical little houses crammed onto miniscule amounts of land in 'developments'.
To me there is just more to life than that. That's why I'm trying to get out of it and make my own way. I decided I'd rather be poor and happy, than 'middle class' and miserable. If I can make it work, I'll be living out in the boonies on 500 acres of land with no traffic, no managers, no commute, and lots of winding country backroads to cruise the chevelle around :D

Sounds like you should start a www.quixtar.com (http://www.quixtar.com/) business.
Not so much money that you have to put in either.
Let me know if interested I have some good contacts in that business.

Well, that brings up an interesting point. If you lack the funds to start your own biz, and dislike office politics/grind and fixed salaries, the next best thing to owning your own business is field sales.
I write this from Tyler, TX after a great day of driving around the outskirts of Dallas dealing with present and potential customers (for both my day job and my company. My boss called my cellphone once, but I don't know--the reception was bad so I hung up :naughty:

Its funny you mention sales. Thats what I thought would be a logical next step for me considering my magnetic personality :) . But this current sales position is a big dead end. I'm looking into other sales opportunities that I would find more challenging. Any positions open??? I wish I lived on the west coast, I would love to work for someone in the auto acc. industry....here in Jersey there's no such job.... too bad...

Well, I feel that no matter what you make, you will still be "broke". People live to the end of thier means 95% of the time :screwy:
Look at the big time sports guys, hell, they are just as strapped as we are, they just got more expensive taste!
About the job, the more you hate it and dwell on how bad it is, the worse it will get. Find something good about it and try to concentrate on it to get you thru until you find something that fits you. You will make yourself crazy hating and dreading each day :box:

Wow, talk about one way to make me scared about my future!!! I just got a finance internship at a big company up here doing basically accounting work and sales projections. Its going to be a 9-5er with shirt and tie, the corporate world! I am a freshmen at Boston College and honestly dont have the experience or knowledge to make comments like you guys, but I guess I have been excited because even just an internship, I get salary for the summer and a signing bonus...but now I am worried what this 9-5 thing is gonna feel like. Every other summer job I have had was working outside doing landscaping or working at a garden center.
But I am still young, so I am not gonna worry too much, if I hate it, I can change my majors!
Best of luck to everyone...and the best advice I can take is to make sure you love what you do, cause you're gonna be doing it for a while.
Thanks

Some of you guys should rent the film "Career Opportunities" this weekend. It's an important film about a young fella who, in an effort to find himself, takes a job as a night janitor in a Target store.
It probably offers no relavence whatsoever to anyone's particular situation, but it stars a young Jennifer Connely wearing black tights and a simple white T-shirt. It's before she started plucking her uni-brow, but you'll hardly notice. :rolleyes5

Rob, good luck and keep your head up things will work out.
This is a interesting topic to hear from you guys.
I have been working for a company for 2 years and have sorta learned that the billion dollar company isn't at all what I expected in the beginning. I see many guys getting advances that work w/ less drive than others, and have no leadership skills to even ever be considered a good superior. I was once told "a company can only be as good as its leader" which is 100% true. I am glad that I have learned this while I am young-I for sure do not want to work for a large corporation in the future if it is run like the company I work for. For now while I am in college it has been a great job, a great opportunity and learning experience on what to expect in a corporate world of politics and bull. All in all I am content with my job, but each day I go to work I am satisfied because I give 110% and do honest work. I am going to look over the crap that goes on around me because I know I am doing a great job. A learning experience thats all I can say!!

To everyone else, Thanks for the comments, glad to hear I'm not alone, I guess... Well you know, not glad to hear you also hate your job but you get it... For the newbies in corp America, all I can say is just because you put in 110%, punctual, good work ethic, pleasant, etc... doesn'y mean you are immune to the axe when the time comes....OR, if politics plays a role, you'll be out on your a$$.... I tell you this from bitter expierence. I'm not trying to scare or upset you, just opening your eyes....
Good Luck

From some of the programs i watch here in UK from the US I would go into the building trade as there are people always wanting a plumber or chippy or such, when I was in Florida for a holiday a couple of years ago , the advise I was given by a self employed person look at the jobs no 1 esle wants, what did he do rent out porta loos and was making a mint, also looking at job pages they also needed grounds people for golf courses, ie start up a grass cutting comp sit on a mower all day, thats what i was going to to do, this was in Orlando , looked at buying a couple of houses and moving in 1 and renting the other to holiday brits or snow birds . You think why has he not moved cannot get in at the moment . Health reasons + building a house over here .
