what thickness steel is required for a rear firewall for a fuel cell? is 18g steel ok or should i go with 16g steel?

SCCA rules just say yep needs a fire wall

9.3.24. FIREWALL AND FLOOR

Firewall and floor shall prevent the passage of flame and debris into the
driver’s compartment. Belly pans shall be vented to prevent the accumulation
of liquids, except composite/honeycomb structures. All rear-engined
Formula cars are required to have an undertray, from driver’s foot area to
the firewall, for protection of legs and torso.

We choose 16 guage and make it structural and also don't mind the few (litterly a few) extra LBS in that area of the car

in our shop we use powder coated .040 alum and bead roll it, by the sounds of it your building more of a track car then street car, so I would use aluminum. Our shop race car is annual-ed both in scca and nasa.
this is of course with a full cage.

frank, i was thinking the 16g also since i deleted the package tray and then i wouldn't have to add other supports like the 18g.

jake, david pozzi posted something not too long ago about aluminum in a fire so i am trying to stay away from it in the firewalls.

well, its used alot in sports car and circle track racing, If you want to leave it exposed, i would use 20 gauge steel and bead roll it, something like this. we just finished this car earlier this summer. I would use alum any day of the week, its in my nasa aix race car.The 2nd pic is the aix car with .040 tin for firewall, full cage structure etc.
also, jegs and summit sell alum interior/firewall kits so...... http://www.jegs.com/c/Chassis-Suspension_Aluminum-Interior-Components/11323/10002/-1?sendroicid=bbef8492-2d00-41d6-b158-38db0de2603c&sendroiad=3824026901&sendroikwd=Aluminum+Firewall&gclid=CKOA8sPB16QCFeFM5QodijTMLg
