Stuff you need for the Power Tour!

Since there are many veterans of the Power Tour on this site, I thought it might be helpful for the veterans to share some of the secrets, and more importantly, the stuff you must bring with you for a successful Power Tour.

Secrets such as maybe missing the morning mayley in leaving the parking lot with 3000 of your closest friends to the stuff such as chairs, sunscreen, nudie magazines and all the important things needed with you on the Power Tour. Since a car is only SO big, some ideas on things you DO NOT want to bring may also be in order.

Let's share the secrets needed to become a successful "Long Hauler" for board memebers that may be newbies to the tour!!!!

Maybe tape a key up under a rear bumper, or somewhere outside of the car, good enough so that it's hidden from theives, but it will come in handy if you lock everything in the car.

sunblock! Most venues have no shade at all.

GPS navigation units work great when you are in a deadlocked traffic jam in some small town with a single flashing red light. Either sit for hours in traffic, or fire up the GPS and find an alternate path. Also good for planning commuting time and locating gas stations. I have a GPS by Earthmate that costs about $150 at Best Buy and transforms any laptop into a huge screen GPS system.

Car cover if it happens to rain, or to store your car overnight.

pack light. Just shorts and t-shirts.

small most-commonly used tool set to carry with you just in case.

large can of fix-a-flat, a tire plug kit, and a small lighter operated compressor take up much less space than a spare. Honestly, unless you have a blowout, those tools can fix you right up. Nobody wants to roll a donut spare during Power Tour, haha.

if your car uses oil, carry a couple quarts as backup.

the laptop also comes in very handy for uploading all the digital photos from your camera each night at the hotel. Take a TON of photos, there are way too many cars to remember unless you snap a photo of them. Ever been to a car show with 3000-4000 cars in one lot? At each stop? You get the idea.

radar detector. 'nuff said!

nice collection of CDs/MP3s. Alot of in-between areas have sucky radio stations, or none at all.

small cooler with bee... water to enjoy as you drive. I load up on water and Gatorade. Also bring some snacks to munch on. Less stops = better parking spot when you arrive at each venue.

Skip most of the morning driver's meetings. Try to leave before the driver's meetings are over once you know your destination. The venues are often more enjoyable than the actual drive between them. Except for beautiful scenery areas of course (NOT Illinois!!!).

I'll be doing the ULTRA longhaul this year. Houston to Milwaukee, then Florida, then back to Houston. Leaving 2 days early from here to get to the start.

Pack light as you will accumulate stuff. Each event venue has a T-Shirt. If you buy one a day I think you get a free jacket. You can just wear event t-shirts. Business card with your name to give to all the new people you will meet. Lawn chair, digital camera. Good attitude for the adventure you are gonna be on. If you have a problem there is plenty of help.

I know it most situations you have to use it, but for the sake of your wheels get a new tire and have the person installing it clean the wheel the best he/she can ASAP. Don't go the whole power tour on a tire with fix a flat in it, your wheels will start to de-chrome. I work at a tire shop and every chrome wheel that has had fix a flat in it has all the inside chrome come off with the tire, which eventually moves to the wheels face.

coming from an ex tire guy....let them know you have fix-a-flat in the tire if you used it...its a suprise they hate to find..... the stuff is an absolute mess and hell to clean out

I also forgot walkie-talkies if you are travelling in a group. Some areas have crap for cell phone reception, and walkies work better anyways. You can also get into some 'interesting' conversations with other Power Tour vehicles along the way with one. haha

First and foremost, a running car!! I have been on something like 7 of them. Only 1, I had no troubles!! I carry every tool that I can fit! here is my list
socket set, wrench set, vice grips, screwdriver set, plier set, hammer, crecent wrench, small floor jack, misc wiring stuff, test light, extra belt, lotsa extra fluids (ps, brake, water, oil, tranny), zip ties, FIRE EXTINGUSHIER!, battery operated drop light or flashlight, booster box combo with air compressor, spare key. To me those are the necessities! Now the comforts, clothes (mostly shorts and t's, maybe an extra pair of drawers!, 1 pair of pants and sweatshirt if it gets cold and a junk pair of something if you have to rebuild your car in the parking lot!), cooler for liquids and food to save $ for gas, tunes, sunglasses, sun screen, pain killer of somekind, butt plugs (ammodium AD or pepto) and lotsa extra cash!! I had no time for mags or books though. Usually too busy working on the car!! :injured:

I must be brave. I carried clothes,money,food,car cleaning stuff ,spare keys, and that was it. Bringing tools would jinx me.

Why not just get XM radio? It works everywhere and has enough varity to satisfy anyone. I have it in every vehicle I own and never have to bother with cds or anything else anymore.

Ipods are cool, but I don't have the time to d'load music off the net. XM radio is good for those of us that aren't into d'loading music. The Ipods are great for that reason though, hours and hours of only the songs you want to hear.

I'm driving the '69 from Houston to Milwaukee, then driving the long haul to Florida, then driving it back to Houston. Basically THREE long hauls!

Not sure who Larry C. is? I'm rolling with Andy Loyd, he is driving his LS1/Magnacharged '68 RS/SS convertible.
