Is it just me or do others not see all the hype about 5 guys fries? Personally I think they kindof suck.

You really want insane? A locally famous diner has something called spud mountain. Steak fries with melted cheese and full strips of bacon. No bacon crumbles or bits here. It feeds like 5 people. :)

Having eaten there a couple of times, I'd rather have In-N-Out just about any day of the week. Pure burger goodness is Fudruckers, but their sides are pretty marginal. If you weigh over 350Lbs Heartattack is free though, talk about contributing to obesity, they've got it down, 2Lbs of burger, a pound of fries, a Jolt cola and filterless cigarettes all in one restaurant. It's slightly scary actually.

I am not a fan of 5 Guys either, dont get me wrong, their burgers are good; but there are other things I would rather spend $10 on...

I am a loyal In-N-Out fan, and the only other place that has a burger nearly as good is Easy Takeout Burger. Seeing how it was started by an ex-InNOut employee I can see why.

Where is Easy Takeout Burger located?

I have yet to find a better burger place than In-N-Out, for fries it is In-N-Out all the way and I don't really like fries. When there is a 5 Guys in FL I will give them a shot.

Tried it, wasn't impressed.
In N Out #1, by far, end of discussion. Besides, how can you NOT love a place that used to be part owners of the Original Irwindale Raceway and you got In N Out's at the Food Stand - Plus they sponsor Drag Cars to this day!
Bob's Big Boy #2, always has been and no one has knocked them off yet (although their fries are just average) Great food and Car Hop service at many locations!

All the rest are just posers :jump:

A few years back we were in Indy for the Motorcycle version of SEMA. It was about 3am and we went into a White Castle with a suit case and order 100 burgers! They didn't even bat an eye and started making them. When they were ready they asked us if we were the burger mafia. Yes, Alcohol was involved.

And quite frankly if it hadn't been 3am and drunk, they would have sucked.

white castle has been in the NE for quite some time, I remember them in queens in the late '70s. they were in LI since the 70s and 80s also.
I wanted to introduce my kids to them recently when we stumbled on one in NJ. it was alright, nothing to write home about.
when you live in the NE (LI, NY, NJ) the best burgers are at a diner. doesn't matter which one, all diners have a deluxe cheeseburger platter for like $5.99 to $6.99, usually includes fries and a pickle.

I pondered this as I ate my little bacon cheeseburger and fries today at my local 5 guys. I think with almost anything if you go and expect 'the best' you're almost always let down. Regardless of what 'it' is. Resist the hype!

I also decided I like 5 guys because everything tastes fresh to me, the fries remind me of 'boardwalk fries' and because the rolls are not too big. I hate burgers with large rolls (Red Robin & Chili's come to mind). Smaller and higher quality is better than larger lesser quality. I actually prefer those McD wraps over sandwiches primarily due to much less bread.

Also, for me a $10 for a burger/fries/drink at 5 guys is worth the ~$3 more of the equivalent meal at a fast food joint. It's not like the equivalents are cheaper (around here at lest). We have no in&outs.

for whatever those grease inspired deep thoughts are worth, probably less than $.02. :2nd: lol.

I can't bring myself to ordering a burger in a steak place. Our club has at least one meet a year at a local TRH. Love it, as chains go.

White Castles are so bad they are good. I grew up in Detroit, there was a White Castle around the corner from my Pops house. I have to get my Castle fix in the frozen foods section here in Cali. I went to a friends wedding in Youngstown OH a few years ago, found out they didn't have a WC........man was I pi$$ed.

For quality it is In-N-Out but for belly bombers then it is White Castle. Tell them to hold the onions on the bombers, they hate having to scrape them off....lol.

They are opening IN N Outs in Texas - One in Garland/Dallas area and one in downtown Ft. Worth.
Since this requires that they build a "Patty" making and distribution plant in the area expect around 10 with in a year.

I had a 5 guys burger for the first time this week, their fries were a little soggy, but tasty. The burger was awesome though, can't deny that. We have Smashburger now too around here, it's good, but 5guys is better. Love me some Red Robin too, the Royal with the fried egg on top.

Living in the southeast most of my life, 5 guys is good and I also like a chain called Backyard Burger. Whenever I am able to make it out to the west coast though, I absolutely love In-N-Out. I believe they are the best around. What is the combo called- a double-double? That is great with their shake. With that being said, now living in Chile, a bad burger in the states is better than a good burger here. They are disgusting. They built a Johnny Rockets and everything but the burgers are good. I couldn't even stomach a third of a burger. Tried going there twice and had the same result. With the exchange rate here, a trip to there for me, the wife and my 2 young kids was @ $50. Can't wait until I get back for a visit to go have a good burger.

Thats funny. We were in Puerto Vallarta and wanted a burger. have a condo at the Bougainvillea and it's run by Sheraton so figured it would be OK. Got sick. Went into town a couple of days later to the Hard Rock and thought I'd try again, same result! No more burgers till we got home. And did not get sick from tacos on the beach!

Best fast food Mexican was Naugles in St. Louis...but they're long gone.

Naugles was a Southern California fast-food Mexicann restaurant chainn that existed from 1970 to 1988. It was founded by former Del Taco employee **** Naugle. The first Naugles restaurant was located at the southwest corner of Fourteenth St. and Brockton Ave. in Riverside, California (now a Del Taco). ****'s motto was "Prepare food fresh, Serve customer fast, Keep place clean!"
Harold Butler urchased Naugles in 1979 when the chain consisted of three restaurants. The chain was expanded by a system of non-exclusive franchises, which later was ruled unlawful by a federal court. Butler built Naugles up to 225 restaurants by 1986, when he sold the chain to Collins Food International Naugles merged with DelTaco in 1988. A few of the Naugles menu items, such as those with the "Macho" designation, found their way into the regular Del Taco menu. Also, the Naugles Taco Sandwich (Del Taco called it a "bun taco") can still be ordered from Del Taco even though it does not appear listed on the menu.
A few independent franchises kept the Naugles name until 1995.

I'll go back to 5 Guys again if I'm in that area again. Only about an hour from our place in Libertyville IL. Bet 5 Guys doesn't have the secret menu, either
Just some of In N Outs Secret Menu;

Veggie Burger: A hamburger with extra tomatoes instead of meat
Extra Toast: This order toasts your bun a little bit more than usual making it extra crispy
Protein style: Protein style removes the bun and wraps your burger in lettuce like a burrito.
Grilled Cheese: A bun, tomatoes and onions, if you want them, grilled with melted cheese.
Flying Dutchman: For the ultimate meat eater. No bun, no veggies, just two beef patties and two slices of cheese.
Double meat burger: a double double without the cheese.
Animal style: makes any burger come with extra pickles, extra sauce, grilled onions, and a mustard cooked patty.
3 by Meat: three beef patties and no cheese.
2 by 4: a double double with two extra slices of cheese. Not for the weak hearted.
Chopped Chilies: This adds diced jalapenos to any burger
Mustard grilled patty: ask for this and they will spread your patty with mustard before grilling it.
No Salt AKA The Doggie Burger (My Mastiff loves these): you wouldn’t think that this would apply to a burger but it does. In-N-Out patties are heavily salted, ask for no salt and you will get a much healthier and fresher tasting patty.

And then there are the obvious - 3X3, 4X4 or pretty much any combo of meat and cheese quantities up to 4X4. Urban legand is a few 100X100 got made, and I saw a 20X20 once but they changed theier policy to a max of 4X4

OK the fat guy is here…step aside as I regale you with my unbiased and time-tested knowledge of all things bad for you in the culinary world; I didn’t get fat on accident people. Let’s begin…….

First off I've been to both 5 Guys (here in Detroit) and In & Out (Scottsdale, AZ).

Best Fries; In & Out (not great fries but better).

Best Burger; Hands down you gotta give it up to 5 Guys. It's thick, juicy, sloppy, full of flavor, and hits like lead in your belly.....all things a great burger should be. Pricey? Yes…but you pay for quality. In & Out burgers are more "fast food" tasting to me; good but easily forgettable.

And now a word about White Castle (ahem!...Mr. Bernard).

You had to grow up with them to understand their place in Midwest popular culture. Yes they look gross and they stink to high Heaven….but that’s what we love about them. They are a popular late-night meal after the bar or a guilty indulgence every once in a blue moon. Surprisingly enough a lot of people eat them for breakfast and there have been many occasions here at GM where someone has brought in a case of 30 in place of maybe donuts or bagels….and they get swallowed up quick. Some call em “sliders” or “stingburgers”. We actually have several establishments that make a refined “restaurant style” version of this type of burger which are HUGE in metro Detroit. They are Hunter House, Brays, and Tel Way.

And you know what…it’s lunchtime, Tel Way doesn’t sound too bad right about now.

First time I went I ordered a bacon cheese burger and large fry, guy behind the counter is like you dont want a large fry, when asked why he said most people didnt finish the regular. Might as well have smacked me in the face so I ate the whole burger and whole large fry and felt like crap! Now I just get the reg fry but IMO they have the best burgers around, just cant afford to eat there every day!

No one tops Ted's for a hot dog. I've never seen one outside of WNY though.

I am gonna try to hunt down an In and Out during SEMA this year. Where can i find one?

I have to respecfully disagree. Anybody that has been through the small town of Abbeville, SC and stopped by The Rough House knows what I'm talking about. It's an old pool hall and all they serve are hot dogs. Other than drinks and chips, that's it. To tell you how good they are, I once ate 8 at one sitting. They are that good.

They kick ass. The fries are great. I've been going to one of the original ones in DC for years.

Ditto on the Kick Ass, I'm in North Carolina now and Five Guys is great, you can also ask them to cook the fries well done and you can even get Cajun fries !, Cook Out and Fosters is also big here, there's also Fudrucker's (the best), overall the Carolinas have the biggest selection of great burgers, Oh and don't get me started on the onion rings, but some of you are right about the In N Out Burgers, They are absolutely #1

I love Chilli dogs also, most of the guys in the San Fernando Valley know about Cupids, real chilli dogs, not coneys with that sweet stuff on top, Also Matt's Chicago Dogs in Cornelius NC, oh and Dirty Franks in Columbus Ohio.

Went to the RV Show at Pomona yesterday (thinking of upgrading my Motorhome) and lo and behold, PINK'S had a stand set up. Nothing like a Chili Cheese Dog on a Rainy day!

Best fast food Mexican was Naugles in St. Louis...but they're long gone.

The Del Taco(s) in Barstow, CA pay tribute to the old Naugles chain by offering some Naugles stuff on the menu.

First of all if you're calling them "Chili Dogs" then the place has already lost credibility with me.

There are only "Coney Dogs" and the greatest ones in the world happen to come from Lafayette Coney Island and American Coney Island in the birthplace of the Coney Dog; Detroit Michigan.

Forget about it....this debate is closed. Over. Done with.

Agreed.

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who beelines from the airport to In & Out when visiting CA/NV/AZ. Sadly, I know the routes to In & Out from LAS, PHX, LAX, SJC, SFO, SAN.

OK guys there i s a local diner called The New White Steamer in Washington, Indiana. They have what they call steamer burgers, fried on a grill with onions, also they make either German Fries or American fries, they have these awesome potatoes, not sure of type, they first do some boiling I believe, then they will throw a big cup up on the grill and put the oil/butter/what ever on and grill them golden brown. They have the most awesome brewed tea also.
Very few grills can match them. Used to eat there every day.
Now when I am at work in Bloomington Indiana Ill take Steak And Shake Triple Steak Burger with Cheese, bacon and ketchup and a larger order of fries.
As for local home town place, in Loogootee there is a place called Dairy Master and they have a HUGE tenderloin called a Mr T, also very good. But local DQ had the Chicken Strip basket with Extra gravy, ooooooooohhhhhhhhhh yummmmmmmmm.
Now if I can ever get a spice similar like what I used to get I have a secret recipe for Sloppy Joes that is INCREDIBLE.
HMMM if I have enough I may got for Steak and Shake tomorrow,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
