11-18-2010, 04:22 PM
are you using an arc welder?

robertjra
11-18-2010, 06:08 PM
No its a old wire feed with no gass or flux core the welds are only to hold it in place I will take it to the local shop to have it all done the wright way

robertjra
11-19-2010, 08:29 PM
Has anyone done this on there frame I would love to see how you did yours

robertjra
11-25-2010, 04:16 PM

ponjohn
11-30-2010, 06:04 PM
When you remove all the sheet metal like you did, what do you use for a reference?

I assume the panels just don't fall into place, where do you take measurements from to make sure it is square?

Thanks for the info.

robertjra
11-30-2010, 09:11 PM
you have to bace it all up before you take any thing off on the inside of the car when its time to put it all back on every thing just gets clamped into place loose and all the gaps are cheked before anything is welded you have to put the doors on and the trunk everything has to be inplace

ponjohn

So you actually welded some angle iron or the like to maintain the "shape" and use for reference?

robertjra
12-01-2010, 06:42 PM
ya its more of a brace but the inner structure is very strong but the main thing is to put all the body panels on without welding and fit it all so you can tweak things and move stuff around. the pic's i have don't show the brace that good but if you go to some of the other builds on this site you can see it better.

I commend you on your guts to dive in. Looks like you've got a handle on the mechanical side of things....

Sorry.... in advance... sorry.... but it GRATES (as in to chew/knaw/grind into bits) on me when you don't use the GREAT feature called SPELL CHECK... a random forgotten letter or misspelling... that's cool, we all get excited.

Please, if this thread grows the way I really hope it does & we can all see the GREAT results... use the spell check on your posts...

well we have room to fit the 6 speed in now all i have to do is bolt in the frame!!
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/248731_219850344700134_100000255100572_8-1.jpg
and this is just so i can move the car around a little better i will be installing the torque arm and the m9 rear end in the next 6 months or so have to save up a little more
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/246609_219850831366752_100000255100572_8-1.jpg
now she is sitting on all 4 tires and dang the front end is low with no air in the bags
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/253679_219851101366725_100000255100572_8-1.jpg

so with no air in the bags the lowest point is 1 and 1/2" and its the oil pan i think a skid plate will have to be made!

Looking for a little help from all of you. If you have seen my build thin you know I'm trying to do all of this on my own and that I'm till in the mock up stage, oh ya and I have a budget, I think my next step should be the rear end and the torqe arm from speed tec? What do all of you think? Thank for all of your imput! Just want to see what all of you would do if it was your car

Robert.. Can you post a pic of the stock tunnel you cut out sitting over the trans so we can see how far off it is?? Im wondering if you can do a little hammering and add back a little sheet metal where needed and use the stock tunnel?

Im wondering if you can do a little hammering and add back a little sheet metal where needed and use the stock tunnel?Like he said...can you sit the stock tunnel over it and add a strip of sheet metal along each side to get the height you need to clear? If it isn't wide enough...split it down the middle and add a strip there to widen it.

mock up on the trans tunnel looks like i will need 1 1/2" of steel to fill in what do all of you think if i use some thicker steel from the fire wall all the way down to the cross member to tie the body in a little tighter? hope you all are still fallowing me but the cross member i want to use is the one that DSE built and cuts into the floor like this pic
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/06/DSE011201_detail1-1.jpg
i think this will make the body stronger and help with flex also i have to make my own cross member any way so... oh ya i have a pic of the tunnel with the cut out piece on top of the trans i used some 3/4" wood blocks on top of the trans to get room for servicing and adjustment of angles cables wiring etc....... this is what the gap looks like.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/06/253777_221560931195742_100000255100572_8-1.jpg
by the way i don't care how much the car weighs i will not be racing it all the time, prob just some road race and daily driving and some auto cross just for fun oh ya and all burn outs i can get away with. lol

robertjra
06-06-2011, 08:51 PM

Not trying to be too critical, but I would grind out those welds on the rear-end brackets and do them over. From the pictures you dont seem to be getting it hot enough and its just balling up in the middle.

I have to agree 100% some are real cold with no penetration. Better to be safe.

Thanks I'm going to do the rear window the same way. I love my dimple dies kind of hard to come by got mine from SPC but for the price I expected some sort of case or box, they just sent them in plastic bags.

So life happens to us all bit I never gave up on this build work moved me to Montana (my home town) when I moved here my first goal was to buy land and build my own shop house, I wanted to build this with my own 2 hands so with some help from friends and lots of late nights.... took 3 and a half years to complete but I did it debt free no mortgage no loans!!! So the Camaro was on the back burner but now the shop house is complete and I'm happy to say the Camaro will soon pick right back where I left off so enjoy a few pictures and stay tuned because I'm stepping up my game on the Camaro!!!!
