View Full Version : Crazy, stupid, or both?

Last year Best of Show and I decided we were going to try to make SEMA '09. We missed out by about three hours because of a bad brand new throwout bearing.

Over the course of this past year I got to do things like this: https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/10/Screenshot20100912at72036PM-1.jpg
(Image credit goes to Steve Rupp, thanks for the great shot)

Then as you might know from the only topic I've ever started on this site, this happened:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/08/DSC_0672-1.jpg

Now, because we're either crazy, stupid or both, we have decided to give this whole SEMA ordeal another shot, that's right...

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/10/DSC_07051-1.jpg

Hope to see many of you this November :fingersx:

Tomorrow I take a nice two hour drive to Sylmar to drop off your housing.. you so owe me.. ;)

D!ck and I were talking over the weekend, and decided that since he's no Troy Trepanier and I'm no George Poteet, instead of going over to the bank to open a joint checking account, the two of us will go over to Costco to buy a joint cooler. The agreement will be that the cooler is to remain stocked with plenty of beer, and that when said cooler has a quantity of less than 10 beers it is to be automatically refilled at my expense. Steve, just name your favorite beverage and you'll find it at the shop next week.

I love the idea!!! Especially since it won't be me having to make the deadline---LOL. You guys will make it---and as someone else mentioned, it gets the motivation going to get it done----D?ck is the man---if he can't do it, no one can. Really, if you need an extra set of hands bro, let me know--I'll take a day off work to help contribute to the thrash--would be fun.

Thanks for the offers to help guys. I think we should be in much better shape than last year. Last time we only had 2 1/2 weeks to get the car together (cut and buff, hard lines, glass, install dash, hang entire front end, exhaust, etc) so I think this year should be a bit easier since the car has already been together. If we're in real good shape the last weekend I think a bbq for the local crowd might be in order. I think I've got a lot of favors to start repaying!

Now, here are some pictures to get everyone caught up to roughly where we are now.

First, my help throughout this process is pretty much limited to taking thinks apart... lol. So I pulled the front end apart, and ordered a new subframe without waiting on insurance.

New DSE subframe! I sprung for the shocks with remote reservoirs this time
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/09/shop039-1.jpg
We finally got the insurance check a couple weeks ago, and things have been moving at a breakneck pace ever since:

This weekend:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/10/DSC_07041-1.jpg

This week:
Wheels are over at Forgeline, I'm having one re-hooped to move it out a 1/2" and the other (pass. side) is being built as we speak. Big thanks goes out to Jon and Justin at Driverz inc.

I also owe Steve big time for running my rear axle all the way up to Sylmar so I can have a full floater built. I'll post more on how that goes later.

Currently the old subframe is being dropped, which might seem weird this late in the game, but we needed to have it under the car to help determine how much space was available for these pedals:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/10/shop043-1.jpg

the pedals are now more or less in, and everything can more forward again. The next few weeks are going to get hectic... By the end though, we should have one hell of a car, and this time it should be a better driver's car than before.

I wish I'd stolen those pedals from you, but I got them from Summit, and have spent the last month buying all of the little stuff not included.

If we do get the car to SEMA you can sit in it, make engine noises and pretend to heel-toe downshift.

Budlight should use us for their new add campaign, because [I]here we go[I]

I know I said it before but that hood is going to look awesome Matt. Can't believe how much has been accomplished on the car already--very cool. So run down what's left---front sub, mount the rearend, final bodywork and paint (big stuff only here). I'm sure the things like getting the new pedals actually working, running new lines, etc will make for a much longer list. Keep us posted---will look forward to SEMA and seeing you and the car there. :fingersx:

Good stuff Matt, I wonder how well the body gaps will be after that cooler is emptied lol

Pretty good I'd guess. If not I will be calling on Doug to come down and use some of his panel gap spray. As for the hood, that is another story. It will probably take another 30 pack deposit into the cooler to get that thing right. It was kind of warbley to begin with and all of that welding exacerbated the problem.

Speaking of the cooler - I wanted to stock it with some Stone Brewery Beer from down the street, (make a stop if you're local and like beer) but was told that that would be like poison. Apparently BOS runs exclusively on Budlight. Now I know how Steve can afford to have them change his engines instead of oil.

They are going to make sure it is fine after the accident, and throw on some ported heads to wake the LS2 up a little.

Doug

Yeah, you've got a pretty complete list there. Tomorrow we put the subframe in, then **** starts hanging metal on the front, after that it gets any necessary spot priming, then paint. The rear end is over at Speedway and might be another week depending on what Speedway has to out source. The hardlines shouldn't be too time consuming since the bulk of the lines are going to be reused. There's a ton that I'm leaving out, but I don't want to scare myself by remembering anymore right now.

Here is the car by the end of today:

Doug, I know you might find it hard to believe, but not everyone is a celebrity like yourself, nor does everyone want to be a celebrity. I don't have a 50 page thread about myself over on Lat-g like you do, and I because of that can't quite manage to look cool while doing something retarded. Maybe next week I'll post the picture.

Today was a nice short day at the shop. We put the subframe in, normally a simple process, but one which we complicated beyond belief.

Whoever can point out everything wrong with the below picture might just get a free bro-touring shirt, if we decide to make shirts this year.

Hmmm, rear tires mounted on the front?

A few parts are missing?

New front fenders are transparent?

There are 3 drops of oil on the floor?

Shifter knob is crooked?

One valve cover bolt head is 13.5° out of phase with the others?

Jack stand's cushions do not match?

Left side cardboard frame end protector has 1.5 more turns of packing tape than the right side.

Engine hoist does not appear to be a chevy color?

Someone left their rubber duckie laying on the passenger rear quarter?

Driver's side windshield wiper is missing along with the door handles?

Left front tire is mounted on the right and visa versa?

1. the beer was in the fridge still.
2. the beer comes out after at least some work is accomplished for added incentive. When the car is done there might even be a ceremonial opening of the mason jar containing some "Tennessee Ground Water," which tastes peculiarly like applesauce. Gregg, (Gandalf) knows what I'm talking about. Doug might still have memories of that stuff from RTTC. Then again maybe not :lmao:
3. There are three of us working. Two of us are supervising.

Dude, great comment about the hood. That's hilarious. I decided to stay with the purple color. It would be hard for me to imagine the car any other color these days. I almost went charcoal gray the first time but couldn't find a non custom color I was happy with. Besides, everyone has gotten into gray recently.

Anyway, I've got a little update. The paint guys have been busy color sanding and buffing various parts of the car, and are hoping to be done Wednesday. Meanwhile **** has been busy installing parts that have come in. I love clean, functional, industrial design and the parts we've been getting certainly help accomplish the theme. I think these photos might help prove there might indeed be some beauty in functionality

I have to go back up to Speedway Engineering to have them build and weld brackets for the rear brakes, then the floater can go together. I've heard they can be a pain to sort out, but are amazing once they're working properly. Hope ours works properly from the get go.

On a side note, I just received paperwork from the at-fault lady's insurance company. They're a bit... slow. They still haven't determined that their driver was at fault, and have no idea that Hagerty has been hard at work on the claim. I think it could be fun telling the Mercury adjuster that Hagerty is going to be asking for 50k at the end of the year. I am certainly glad Hagerty will be asking instead of myself.

Well, a lot has happened in just a couple days. The full floater is back at Speedway having brackets made for the brakes, and will be ready Friday.

Meanwhile at the shop D!ck ran the hard lines for the brakes, everything came back from the powdercoater's, and the engine went back in. Oh and somewhere along the way the car got shiny again.

So the hood idea had been floating around for a while, and likely would have become a winter project. The pedals on the other hand wouldn't have happened otherwise. I asked **** about changing the pedals out before and he just looked at me and said, "yeah... no."

I still wish Saturn Lady had hit my Mustang. Although, I have become somewhat attached to it. Just my luck someone would hit it if it became collectable in 20 years.

Geez Matt, that's the hard way to go about getting the car to look freshly detailed top-to-bottom.
But, the car looks fantastic, and will have several more tweaks that you will really enjoy.
I really like the black calipers/rotors.

It might be the hard way, but as BOS also told Steve, "they turn out so nice because we do them twice."

Here is more progress from today. It won't be long now. Mostly because it can't be. what do we have, 9-10 days left?

The hood is finally done. I can't believe how many hours went into this hood. Everyone had to take turns working on it so no one got too worn out. I have a newfound respect for the commitment it takes for builders doing extensive custom metal work.

So, after a couple little incidents, all of which have been taken care of, the car is progressing on schedule. The floater is now under the car, and pretty much everything is together. The rear brakes and clutch remain to be bled, so as long as they work properly we will have a drivable car by the end of tomorrow. :fingersx:

Turns out that we're not only crazy and stupid, but apparently fairly good at both of those things.

First the stupid:

It was posted a while back, but it needs to be seen again. Here we have D!ck installing a subframe using a lift an engine hoist, and jackstands, all at the same time.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/10/IMG00049201010101324-1.jpg

Figure 2: again we can't seem to grasp the concept of the lift. Apparently I haven't figured out what creepers are for either
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/11/shop0841-1.jpg

Figure 3: while an explanation is probably necessary, there is no remotely logical explanation of what is taking place here. Perhaps Jon rolled over onto the floor so that he could complain (which makes him happy).
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/11/shop155-1.jpg

Figure 4: Given the timeframe for the scope of this rebuild, it seemed only natural that we do our best to emulate the manner in which people dealing with big projects work. Here we've taken some pointers from Caltrans and the lovely state of California. While there are only two of us who are "supervising" pictured, there is likely one more person standing out of view, one who had to take the photo, and at least one person off in the corner fiddling around with something like a steering column (Gregg, aka Gandalf).
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/11/shop123-1.jpg

Now for some proof of craziness. All of this happened in a month. Tonight the car is strapped down in its trailer and ready to hit the road tomorrow morning. It runs, it drives, and it's more complete than its ever been. There are a couple little things to fix, but with these types of cars there is always something to fix or do. I can't thank the guys enough. They did an incredible job. This year there was no all nighter like last year. We weren't up until 5am, a mere 6 hours from the time we were supposed to check in at SEMA. This year the latest D!ck left the shop was around 8pm. It only happened once, and it happened several days ago. I'm amazed at what the crew accomplished, but above all else, I'm amazed by how they accomplished this rebuild. Everyone went above and beyond what a customer could ever ask for. Nothing is a better indication of this than the fact that I was the last person to hear about our little 2010 SEMA thrash.

So, we had so much free time today I had a chance to make a stand for our new sign that Mike Casti was kind enough to create. You would be amazed what can be created with little bit of scrounging around the old parts pile, some scrap metal, and a little planning. Looks ok I think. I think it might even put all of those people with crying dolls and drive in window trays to shame.

There isn't actually a beer cooler, but that is not to say that the legend of the beer contract isn't at least partially true. The shop has what the guys like to call the world's most expensive refrigerator, which is covered top to bottom with stickers from every vender imaginable. It is in this fridge that the "payments" are deposited.

Jon, other than sitting in the car while on a lift and pretending to shift while making engine noises, along backing the car into a parking spot, I have no idea how the pedals really work. From what I can tell though, the pedals are pretty trick. The new brake pedal has way less movement than the old one. Tilton's master cylinders are supposed to have less dead pedal stroke, and I think that might be true. I'm not sure how much more effort it will take to stop the car, but in theory it shouldn't require that much more effort than before, since the only actual change in mechanics was a slight decrease in pedal ratio. My initial parking lot impressions have me hopeful that the floor mount assembly was exactly what I was looking for. I'll talk more about that once I go and drive it though.

Matt - where did you get the intake - i want something like this and i know Spectre has one but i'm digging the black runners.

Don, you're talking about the cold air intake right? We made it out of left over four inch truck exhaust tubing that had 90 degree bends. We just cut the pipes and welded them where you can see the seam in the middle. Afterwards we powder coated it a semigloss black.

I think so, but beer time doesn't start for me until I can get up to sema on Wednesday. D!ck on the other hand... :)

As for the car's location, I'm not quite sure where it will be, except that it will be alongside Penny and the One Lap Camaro. I think the cars are parked between the wheel and tire hall and the main hall, but I'm not positive.

Sorry I missed some of you guys. I Would have liked to have had the opportunity to chat, and put faces to names, but I was wandering around quite a bit and only came by the car to check on it from time to time.

I was going to write a few words about how SEMA went, but I sort of got stuck telling short story. In retrospect I think its actually pretty funny.

Several weeks ago D!ck and Chris at BOS entered the car for the GM Design Awards on a whim. Fast forward to early Wednesday morning of SEMA week. A crew of GM designers came around to look at the car. Then, a little while later they came back and managed to catch D!ck for an interview. While there they notified him that they were going to pick a winner around 11am or so. Well, 11 came and went. Typically if you never get a call for an award it's because someone else has won. Go Figure.

Around 7pm **** receives a call on his cell phone from someone notifying him that he'd won. His response was one of pure shock. I think it went something along the lines of, "really? Are you sure? Can I ask why you picked us? This isn't some kind of cruel joke is it?"
To which the caller simply replied, "yes. You won best GM sports car because the car had a cohesive theme from bumper to bumper, and no, this isn't a joke. Be at room N223 around 7:15 tomorrow morning."

And this is where the story takes a strange but funny detour in the form of a sidenote worthy of explanation. When a group of guys like us happens towin an award like this, it's pretty unbelievable, and hard to believe. It seemed to good to be true. So, naturally the paranoia ensued. We started looking for any reason it couldn't be true. Out of all of us, D!ck's mind worked up the most highly irrational, but also most logical explanation as to how this could in fact be too good to be true.

Charlie Hutton. A few years ago Charlie had rented some space at the shop to work on a car. While there he pranked the BOS guys, and did so frequently. When he left to paint a car over at the Greenings' D!ck decided it was time to even the score. D!ck called the Greenings up, they agreed to participate, and a plan was hatched. I won't get into the specifics but Charlie got pranked, GOOD. He told D!ck that he would get him back. Maybe not that week, or that month, but Charlie vowed he wouldn't forget that day, and would one day even things up.

Back to SEMA. It's Wednesday night, and here we are throwing back some beers at the Lat-G party, celebrating the win. Yet that night, in the back of our minds we were working hard to shrug off our crazy idea as to how this whole thing was just elaborate prank. It couldn't be. It just couldn't be? I don't think any of us seriously believed that Charlie was capable of doing such a thing. At least I didn't. Of course my only real knowledge of Charlie Hutton comes by way of TLC television shows on which he seems to pop up from time to time.

It couldn't be a prank. We were given specifics on where to report and everything. Really, the only thing that seemed weird was having to meet at 7:15 am. In vegas time that is the equivalent of some ungodly early hour of the morning like 4:52, or something weird like that.

That night I don't think any of us slept well, which was pretty remarkable considering the fact that that stuff we drank, which happens to be called beer has been known to make a fellow tired if he drinks enough of it. Around 6am we woke up, got ready, headed over to the convention center, and tried to find meeting room N223. The anxiety was growing and I started to become increasingly worried that this was, in fact, some kind of elaborate ruse. I'm not sure why my brain started to think this way, but it did. Maybe it was lack of sleep, which beer and tequila had failed to remedy when I'd got gone to bed. Regardless, I went from being 99% positive we'd won to somewhere around 95% positive that we'd won. 4% might not seem like a big number, but that little bit of fear and anxiety is a real motherf---- as you wander around a not-yet -open convention center staffed with a bunch of idiots who should have known their way around, but didn't. I was shocked by their ineptitude. They were like a bunch Germans who couldn't find Poland. At 7:15 we were supposed to be at the awards breakfast. It was 7:10 and I was somewhere on the second floor of the south hall trying to find room N223 which was actually somewhere on the second floor of the north hall. D!ck meanwhile had decided to take the monorail over, which didn't even start running until 7:00. Oh yeah, we were in good shape.

Miraculously we were all in room N223 by 7:30, which was when the small awards ceremony started. And it was a small ceremony, but that was a good thing, because there were plenty of people from GM who were capable of telling us if we were actually going to collect an award that day.

Turns out we were:

We just got one trophy. As a somewhat serious joke I was thinking it would be really cool if we could get someone with a 3D printer to make a replica, or have one CNC'd so that we could treat the the trophy just like the Stanley Cup, where the real one is locked up, and the "other one" travels around during which time everyone gets a day with it. D!ck said that the trophy was ultimately mine, but I think it will spend a lot of time in their shop. After all, without them I'd just have a bunch of sketches on paper...well, that and a pile of cash.
