I blew my engine (327 sbc) on my 1969 camaro ways back and you know how the ole saying goes; Life Happens. I got caught up in my school, work, and family stuff. However finally im getting around to getting a new engine. So me and my pops sat down and started discussing the plan.
And were debating either a 350 or 454 with a 4l80e. This car will mostly be used for weekend cruises and weekend racing (gotta have fun ya know) with some highway driving as well. Im loving the power of the 454. However i was informed by my local engine shop guy that you shouldn't go with a BBC unless it was gonna be a drag car?
Any input, suggestion, advise we can get on the pros and cons. and which one mite be a better choice. and suggestions on where to get one would be great!

Thanks,
God bless.

The statement of big blocks are only for drag cars is a bad assumption based on good intentions. Big blocks are heavier, they are going to make a difference on an AutoX course.

For the price now a days, you might want to look into an iron block LSx engine. I know around here you can get the 5.3s in decent shape for $400-500.

I've had both, and there is no mistaking a big block when you hit the throttle. The power is just crazy. One the other hand I just love the sound of a sbc buzzing along at 6500 rpm. Id have to say go small block in your case. It sound like you plan on mostly cruising it so you may as well take advantage of the better fuel economy, lower cost, less weight. You'll also be able to reuse more of your old parts if you want to such as radiator, exhaust system, brackets, intake/carb. A well built small block will make plenty of power for occasional racing.
