I have a vortec roller assembled but I won't be using for a year. What can I spray in spark plug holes? To keep cylinders from rusting. WD40?

Thanks

I don't know that I would want to store an engine assembled for a year, there is just no good way to lubricate everything to keep it from sticking, especially lifters. Can you put a pan on it and some break in oil in it and prime it once a month then turn over by hand. That should keep it like new.

Don't use WD40, it attracts moisture, use a product such as, Pennzoil Marine Fogging Oil 12 Oz. Aerosol
$4.58 new - Ace Hardware Superstore, if the engine is in the car, disconnect the coil, drain the fuel out of the carb, pull the spark plugs open the carb to WOT and spin engine over with starter while spraying the fogging oil down the carb for about ten revolutions or more. If the engine is on a stand pull the plugs and spray the fogger into each sparkplug hole while a buddy turns the engine over with a wrench. replace the plugs and cover openings (carb, exhaust ports) when finished. A year is not a long time to store an engine especially if you keep it in a dry enviroment.

WD40 attracts moisture? The WD means water displacement. I've never heard anyone claim WD40 attracts moisture.

Anyway, you're going to need to grease everything if you intend to store it for a year. This includes the main and rod bearings. If this was not done, I'd do as Robert suggested and prime the engine once a month. So long as you have the oil pump and pan on, all you need is a drill attachment to spin the oil pump.

I've heard in the past WD40 caused corrosion in the long term.

I've been drag racing for many years and have seen the bad effects of WD40 on cylinder walls after only two weeks of storage between races, Just pre oil the engine before you fire it up and it will be fine.

WD-40 evaporates pretty quickly. I've had Marvel Mystry Oil on machined parts that see moisture and never had any troubles. The runways and stays on most of the equipment stay in good shape with that oil too.

Sta-Bil fuel Stabilizer I use it every winter for 10 years now in our House boat, that one has twin 350 engines, and in the ski boat (351 windsor) in that one and never had a problem

and I fog the cylinders with their fogger simple!!

I've oiled a freshly machined block down with 30w then bagged it and it still managed to get rust the bores when I let it sit for 3 weeks. If it's apart I don't trust any oils, I use lps-3 or equivalent product that creates a waxy film. But since it's assembled priming (will fresh clean oil in the pan) and cranking it over a few times by hand every now and then should do the trick, never had a problem that way(knock on wood).
