well ladies (i know there is a few of you out there) and gentlemen, i've been on this site for years now searching and prodding through the forums long before i even became a member but i think its time i make my debut. the purpose of this thread is to show the work that has been done and work that still needs to be done from the average person without the six figure bank accounts, more like four figures including the change, lol.
ive had this 68 camaro since i was a child. my father had a 67 or 68 camaro convertible when i was a kid that was blazing bright red with black rally stripes down the middle with the huge mickey thompsons out back and skinny up front, real pro street kind of camaro in the 80s. i loved that car but he sold it with aspirations of making something better. naturally he always regretted it despite my warnings. even as i child i knew it was a bad idea, but we live, we learn, we get another toy. so eventually my dad bought another convertible. it was a pile of crap of course but i knew what it was and i asked him to have it. sure enough he said ok and through it to the side.
since then i went through grade school, high school, and six years in the military and the car just sat, with no work done to it. it was just moved from one garage to another to just left outside for dead. all these years id ask him to help me work on it but he was usually working hard just trying to make ends meet by any odd jobs he could find on the side, on top of his regular job.
in 2007, roughly a year after the military i had moved to florida and left behind my current project (1994 mazda rx7) to be worked on by a local shop (dover, de). the day i was due to fly back to pick the rx7 up i get a call at 6am to find out that it was stolen... :nopity:how convenient it was stolen the day i was going to pick it up, i know, but thats another story. all i have to say on that is his wife left him, he got kicked out of the military and his house was foreclosed on, what goes around comes around. moving right along...
at this point i knew i needed a car, so since i was flying back to NJ, which is were my father and the camaro was at anyway, i figured now was the time to get cracking on this thing since i had the time. so here begins my journey.
i have tons of photos from over the years to help illustrate my story but i will only be showing a select few so that i dont blow someones computer up when they view this page. follow along and you will understand why its this car feels like its taking an ETERNITY to build, lol.
these pics are of when i first got started on it. all new front sheetmetal was added about six seven years ago but that was it. no mechanical or otherwise since then. these were taken around Nov 07'.

my dad said when he first got the car he had new quarter panels put on.... as you can tell by that massive gap at the top of the door, whoever put them on did a great job....
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/09/CIMG1784-1.jpg
interior still looks like new!!!!

305 sbc that im assuming came out of an 80s camaro. pulled the billet air cleaner from another car i had, figured this one was better suited for it and changed out the edelbrock carb for a holley since we were having some kind of fuel deliver issue. naturally, that didnt fix anything, lol.

after days and days of getting no where with the motor my father then slow migrating to the body work despite the fact that i wanted the car drivable first and foremost. but being a good father that he is, he didnt care what i had to say, lol. so at this point we began body work, sanding down to metal repriming and body filler.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/09/CIMG1810-1.jpg
after spending hours at the paint supplies store we realized i was to poor to buy the metallic silver or candy colored paint i wanted so we went with a 2 stage black base coat/clear coat.

the car sat like that over the winter in NJ until i was ready to bring it to Florida in the spring of 08. i knew the motor was still give me problems before it was shipped so i had arranged for a shop in clearwater, FL to install a freshly rebuilt 350 zz3 motor with flat tops, vette aluminum heads and 700r4 transmission as soon as it got there.
here it is the day it arrived in florida.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/09/CIMG3451-1.jpg
two months later and the new motor is still not in the car. why you ask? the owner kept putting my build off to the side for his quick fixes while i stood patiently waiting. during that time i upgraded to 17" billet wheels. what a difference that made! the motor on the floor is the rebuilt zz3 waiting to go in...
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/09/CIMG5699-1.jpg
wheels they can make all the difference in the world. the car was at his shop so long he took it out side and washed it, then sent me this picture. why? who freakin knows? if you have time to wash, why the hell arent you putting the motor in?
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/09/CIMG56992-1.jpg
new motor, poly body bushings, 3 core aluminum radiator, msd wires, spark plugs, ignition, water pump, alternator, harmonic balancer, flywheel, finally in after several months and you guessed it, ran like crap. dont worry there is more on this to come, lol.https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/09/CIMG6121-1.jpg

i finally get the car back from the garage sometime in the late summer of 08. so despite it running horribly i began adding all the dress up stuff ive accumulated while it was at the shop. new door handles, door and quarter covers, and 67 camaro mirror
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/09/CIMG6150-1.jpg
more billet goodies for the engine bay such as valve covers and breathers, pulleys (actually installed when the motor when in), wire holders, upper rad. hose, custom oval air cleaner bolt, water neck and other various parts
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/09/CIMG6325-1.jpg
poor man's radiator panel close out, lol. i had some aluminum laying around so i found a good use for it :). in case your wondering why there is a piece of bamboo holding up my hood, its because i had the shop put on a 4" fiberglass hood. so they took the springs out but i went back to the metal hood and they couldnt figure out how to get the springs back on...

i eventually moved back north the PA. the car actually sat in Florida for a few months but i then decided to ship it back to NJ to my fathers place were it sat over winter in his spare garage. come spring of 2010 i pull the car out to fix all the sh*t work the shop in florida did and to my surprise the block was cracked. why you ask? because the shop in florida put water and only water without any anti-freeze/coolant. lucky me, out of all the shops i picked i had to pick the one with the worst possible mechanic.
moving right along. over the winter i found a nice set of 19" staggered wheels i wanted. so despite not actually having tires i had to see what they would look like on the car, lol. put some soft wood down and mounted them up.

here is a photoshop of it lowered roughly 3" and no spoiler which is the route im headed. just imagine tires on it, lol

currently, the car has the 406 with the same vette heads. ive changed to an electric rad fan to help clear space in the engine bay. rerouted some wires to help clear the bay out as well.
i just got in a 13" big brake kit but also started to piece together a 14" brake kit for all four corners so im likely going to be putting the 14" on and sell the new 13" kit. i will be keeping it manual brakes with a 7/8 wilwood MC and adjustable prop valve.
i will be selling the 17s asap as im literally shoping for tires for the 19s right now. if anyone is interested let me know.
i also have coming in the mail a full sheetmetal shaved engine bay kit that consist of the firewall, fender wells and radiator close out.
billet brackets for the alternator and power steering
3" drop leaf springs with comp engineering stability bars, all global west leaf bushings. in the front i have bmr upper and lower tubular arms with qa1 double adjustable coilovers, sway bar and lots and lots of other stuff i have sitting in boxes all waiting to go in.
from here on out i will be posting as i go. hopefully i can get the opinions of the pros on here to help me build the best car i can on my tiny budget.

Looks like a great start with lot's of ups and downs. Sorry to hear about the motor problems. What are your new plans for the motor? Is it possible to get another block and have all of the internals swapped over along with the heads? keep the pics coming.

late spring this year i installed a 406 sbc. i transferred over the external parts from the 350 zz3 such as, heads, intake manifold, water pump, etc. runs ok as is, but it could use some professional help to get it running its best.

thanks for the kind words everyone. im getting her done slowly but surely.
small update.
i just ordered my tires for 19" set i have here in the house so these 17s ARE OFFICIALLY FOR SALE!!! let me know if you are interested. they are 17" centerline forged daggers. tire size is a 225/50/17 ventus hr II all the way around. im not sure the backspacing but i have never rubbed any tire on the body or frame of the car. located in bethlehem, pa 18015 $600 . local pick up prefered but i have no problem shipping them either.
whenever my post count gets to 50 i will post them in the for sale section. for now i guess they are for sale to those that took the time to check out this thread. :)
many more updates coming as i have ordered a large amount of parts and they are all starting to arrive. should be a fun couple of weeks for me.

well, small update with a few pics, cause i know everyone loves pics like me :)
i recently installed LED tail lights and what a huge difference. the brightness is like night and day. i strongly recommend these to anyone. great investment.
also the larger news is i finally installed my new wheels. all the tires showed up this week and i got them mounted on the wheels first thing friday morning. 255-35-19 front and 285-35-19 rear. i mounted the wheels and tires on the camaro and took a few photos outside. when i went to back the car back into the garage i felt the tire rub the quarter panels. so i drove forward a bit, then tried again. still tire rub so i figured whats the worst that can happen and went into the garage anyway. turns out the quarter panel didnt agree and and ended up digging into the tire pretty damn deep on the drivers side. good times, lol. goes without say, the quarters need to be rolled which i will be getting done on wednesday. enjoy the photos and let me know what you think
(fyi, the cars leafs are sagging and i will be installing my new 3" lowering leafs as soon as i get some free time cleared up along with the front suspension that includes qa1 coilovers so i should be able to get the ride height im after (hopefully)

got a few things going on in this picture. New LEDs i put in this week. billet fuel door i installed a few months ago. but the most interesting is the tire difference, 285-35-19 on the left versus 225-50-17 right. pretty substantial difference.

i also visited carlisle, pa for a huge swap meet. it was great out there. lots of nice people and the weather could not have been better. i managed to pick up a new trunk lid without any holes for the spoiler, header moldings, and misc. motor parts. then after a good day of spending money i sold my 17s to 724tim who just so happened to be at carlisle and made the trip to come pick them up. him and his son are great people and I look forward to running into them again. so all in all, spent money but got some back. good day :)
oh and i forgot, i also order my one piece billet grill, but i have no idea when that will be here since it has to be made. hopefully i will see it by the end of the month if im lucky.

its actually still there, but im happy to say i spoke with my fathers friend, who originally installed them over a decade ago and has perfected his craft since then (ive seen his recent work with my own eyes and im very impressed). he said he will be able to take care of it some time around the 15th of this month!! another good note about going to the carlisle swap meet since he was there and i could speak to him face to face.
also spoke to him about replacing the other metal panels on the car and he is willing to hook me up. so if i end up staying here in PA this winter i will be doing this car right and replace the floor, trunk, firewall, and mini tub as well as whatever else pops up. get her show quality but still use it on a regular basis. :fingersx:

The new Camaro brakes have a different lug pattern, so take that into consideration. C6 Z06 brakes may be a better option.
LV42DAY
10-09-2010, 03:44 PM
already bought them but i am aware the pattern is slightly different. i will either get the existing holes drilled out a bit or drill them between the existing holes (ending up with ten holes in the rotor). either way, im just waiting on the brackets to be finished up, then i will take the rotors to the machine shop and have them and the drum brake spindles machined to work with each other, then the rear disc drilled the same way as the front for the lug bolts. all part of the grand plan of things. should fill out those 19s and stop like hell in comparison to how it stops now.

the kilduff shifter is a sharp looking shifter. just waiting to install to make sure it functions properly. came with a b&m shift cable so hopefully it should go in smoothly. mine has the butchers handle with brass knuckles lever and roman numeral shift numbers.

bringing this one back from the dead. i fell of the bad wagon a bit but have been meaning to get back on the car to get it ready for early spring. i ended up selling off the 13" brake kit on here because i was told my brake brackets for the 14" camaro brakes was on its way. so i went ahead and tore down the front suspension and installed the bmr control arms, addco swaybar, and qa1 coilovers. i also had new ceramic coated headers i was waiting to put in but since the old headers were in the way of removing the control arms i just took them out and once the arms were in put the new headers back in. since i took the headers out i figured i might as well remove the old exhaust and have bought (but not yet installed) 3" tubing into flowmaster delta 40 mufflers. 3" is most likely over kill for the current motor but i left room for growth (maybe in the fall/winter) to get high HP motor so i didnt want to buy an exhaust twice.
back to the brake brackets, long story short the brackets for the 14" brakes got sent to someone else and i had to wait for a new batch to be made... they ended up taking so long i lost steam on the project and just been working on other things. but lately the bug has been biting me and i want to get this thing on the ground and running so when this nasty weather breaks i will be able to hit the streets.
right now the brackets are here and the brakes are basically just waiting to be put in and the exhaust just needs to be put together. lately i've been thinking about relocating the battery to the trunk and finally removing those garbage saggy mono leaf springs in for the 3" leaf springs. i actually just bought a set of qa1 adjustable shocks for the rear so i'm thinking the rear suspension should go in as soon as i button up the brakes and exhaust.
i meant to take photos of the dis-assembly but it turned into one of those i just got started and before i knew it, it was completely torn apart deals. but i will post photos of the new camaro brakes on the first gen after i get them on.
LV42DAY
02-07-2011, 01:52 AM
i also forgot to mention, i bought a set of ring brothers "razor" headlights which is basically a set of harley davidson lights. i was about to install them but wanted to wait and see if they would even be noticeable behind the 1 piece billet grill, especially since i already had crystal clear headlights. well the grill got here and after i installed it (the grill) i placed the razor headlight behind it and in all honesty i could not tell the difference between the crystal clear headlight and the razor headlight, so i do not think i will be using them. but on a good note, the billet grill looks pretty good but needs to be trimmed a bit on the edges to keep the billet bars from flexing out of shape. i also want to do some slight customizing to the grill to help give a better overall look.
lots of small stuff that needs attention, but once i get going on it again im sure i will knock it all out withing a few days. i'm actually looking forward to it considering how slow everything has been around with the weather being so bad. if ever there were a time to work on it, it would be now.

1 piece billet grill with crystal clear headlight. again the razor style headlight is not distinguishable from the crystal clear headlight behind the grill, unless you are staring at it. staying with the crystal clear unless i get extrememly bored one day a decide to put the razor lights in for some odd reason.

no i didnt actually, im looking at buying older bmw 7 series rims, because they have a nice staggered offset so i wont have to run spacers and so i can run wider tires out back. i recently bought a t56 so im trying to get that in as well. did you roll your own fenders or have someone do it? your car is looking great though, keep up the good work and get some more pics when you get it back on the ground! -Dom

thanks, i'm doing what i can with it with a small budget. microscopic in terms of some of the serious builds on here.
the bmw 5 series and 7 series have the lower offset then the 3 series which is actually what these wheels are for. the backspacing is 6" flat. pretty close to the inner tub, a little to close for my taste. i think it might have been alright if i was running a smaller tire, like a 265 instead of the 285. i plan on mini tubbing it anyway so i just took the BFH (Big Frickin Hammer) to inner tub for a little added clearance and rolled the quarter panel lip by lightly tapping it with a hammer for what seemed forever. works out well now but am curious as to what it is going to be like after i lower it....

actually, just found these, brand new set of 5 for $700 without tires http://lancaster.craigslist.org/pts/2182268029.html
and these which are the m6 replicas for $400 with tires used (pretty good deal, but personally dont think they belong on a camaro. might be interesting looking i guess) http://newjersey.craigslist.org/pts/2180484248.html

update:
several life plans have change pushing the camaro on the back burner. i will soon be moving overseas so the camaro will most likely be stored until i am ready to have it shipped to my new home.
but since my last update: i gave my dad the four link and just installed the 3" drop leafs due to time constraints with move. front suspension has been installed with the bmr control arms, qa1 double adjustable coilovers, new tie rods with umi tie rod sleeves. brakes have been upgraded to 14" drilled and slotted with brembo calipers, stainless lines, all new hard lines, and manual 7/8 wilwood tandem master cylinder. the exhaust is set up with 3" flowmasters delta 40s. i changed out the full length headers with shorty style headers after i got the car on the ground do to very bad ground clearance on the drivers side (sat about 3" off the ground). so i still have to take it to a muffler shop to get that extra length finished up. i installed HID lights to help light the road since the lights will now be shining through the billet grill instead of the headlight doors opening like on the traditional RS models. for the trans, i finally got around to installing an aluminum pan with drain plug and installed the kilduff shifter with all new hardware. rear shocks were replaced with the adjustable qa1 shocks. custom door panels are currently mocked up. bought a convertible top boot to cover up the top when i have it down (basically always). lots of other small things that i am sure nobody cares about.
i went to install the rear rotors i ran into a small (depending on how you look at it) problem, in where the drivers side axle was longer then passenger side. turns out my dad replaced that axle years ago but did not put the correct length in. so at this point the car is waiting for the axle to arrive in the mail, should be within the next few days if all goes well.
considering i have less then two weeks before my flight leaves there sure seems to be a lot of small things that preventing me from getting this thing on the road... but i am fairly confident that i have fixed all the previous "work" that was done to it, and fixed the right way. so that gives me peace of mind.

umi tie rod sleeves, very nice piece, would recommend this or any style similar to this. there is no comparison between stock and these. very easy to turn.

hey man the car looks great I see your in bethlehem pa, your not to far from me. Even though your moving away now. Not all of us have huge budgets man. youve done a fine job with what you have. Im impressed. Keep the updates coming as you have the time/money. I know speaking for myself at times it can be tough watching some of these guys finish there cars in less than a year start to finish. Us small folk just plug away as we can...well get there someday.

thanks guys.
sr73bu, i am pretty sure i will not be going to rtts as i moved to puerto rico :). most likely after i have the car shipped here, it will never see the states again.
boostin, you hit the nail on the head. some of the builds on here are absolutely insane with practically no budget and the best of the best parts built by the best of the best in the industry. i dont make that kind of money to where i can get away with that, so i just do what i can, with what i have and buy what i can, when i can and give it my best shot. baby steps, but steps none the less.
p.s. its hot here in PR :P but i am enjoying it

well i have been back state side for about three months as the move to PR was not what it was hyped up to be but we make choices to make our family happy even though they may not be in our best interest. so luckily we for me we moved back to the states and i am now residing in the kissimmee/orlando area in florida. words dont express how nice it is to be back here in florida. this time i around i am not going no where. time to grow some roots.
with that said i will be having the camaro shipped from NJ where the car was stored hopefully by the end of the August. it should have been here a long time ago, but there was a scheduling conflict with the person that will be sending it for me.
i have a few nice parts i have been hording that i am itching to install on it such as billet engine dress up goodies, new gauges, deck lid, interior pieces, and the big dog of them all, a vortech supercharger. should be real fun once that gets installed. i will be saving to hopefully get a nice rear suspension and roll cage installed by late winter/spring time frame (if i am lucky). we will see
