View Full Version : Galvanizing a freshly sandblasted frame?

I read in a thread somewhere about a guy who galvanized his frame after it was blasted. I can get it done really cheap and wondered if there was actually any benefits of it over painting it with POR-15?

Galvanizing will never rust. Once it is galvanized you can paint it any way you want. Some places don't even require you to sandbalst as it needs to be acid dipped. The key is that if you are going to paint it after you need th have them skip the final oil bath. Here are some links to Team Chevelle about people who had galvanizing done.

My camper has a galvanized frame. It still looks new, even after sitting outside for 12 years in the weather. Yeah, if you are going to paint after galvanizing, be sure to tell the galavanizer so they can skip the quench. It will look dull but it will have enough roughness for the paint to grab on and adhere, otherwise any paint will just peel right off in sheets.

I had a CJ7 frame galvanized a while back.
I had the frame vat stripped & then galvanized.
I located a company in Atlanta that did boat trailers, I-beams, ect.
IIRC they charged me $150 and I had to sign a waiver in case the frame warped (750 degree process) or a beam fell on it (they said that chains break from time to time and beams fall).

(750 degree process) Just a note of correction, galvanizing is done in a 850°F maintained liquid zinc bath. The temperature, silicon content in your frame material and welds plus dwell time is critial to the process and controls the thickness of the coating.

Curious what is really cheap. I am looking to do the same with mine and am about 3 hours west of STL.

Does welding galvanized metal produce toxic or poison fumes?

I can't say for sure if they are indeed toxic or poisonious but when I have to weld on galvy at work I wear a resperator. On occasion I have done some with out it and end up with a soar throught and nasal issues. So my guess is yah, its bad for you.

Having done the research, the concensus is that it isn't harmful. The byproduct is zinc oxide which is the same thing you put on your nose at the beach to protect it from the sun. I have a lot of experience welding galv and inhaling it will cause "zinc fever" which will give headaches and chest issues. Wearing a respirator is a good idea.

Hard to say since your location isn't in your sig or anyplace else.

We use disposable respirators here at work that do a pretty good job keeping you from getting
"metal fume fever". These are a good idea if ventilation isn't good in the area where you are grinding or welding on galvanized materials. You can find these at most safety supply houses....

I am planning on galvanizing my frame in the near future. I am going to make sure to test fit everything first. I don't want to have to cut or weld anything once it is galvanized.

Near me there are a couple of places that I am aware of and we have used here at work....
Va Galvanizers in Ashland Va,
Industrial Galvanizers in Petersburg Va.,
South-Atlantic Galvanizers in Graham NC,
Bristol Galvanizers in Bristol Va-Tn.

Yeah well the galvanizing that really makes you sick was like old buckets and tubs whichalso had lots of lead in it too. But the Environmental (non) Protection Agency had then remove a lot if not all the lead content (RHOS) compliant. this make it less effective than before BUT still very useful. I do know a lot of the Rock crawler guys have been using a combo of Rhino lining and thed spray on ,weld through cold galvanizing a lot with great results.
