View Full Version : How to take 16 seconds off your autocross time...

So I am standing around the autocross at the Holley LS Fest in Bowling green, Ky. On Saturday about noon when Bill Tichnor from Holley introduces me to this scruffy looking group of guys [Justin and his guys from the Hotrod Barn in Williamsburg Iowa] that had just won the LS engine swap contest. They swapped out a small block and installed a new LS6 engine is 31 minutes. [same swap on our Chevelle took Greg 2 weeksJ]. While they were doing their winners interview for TV and radio they mentioned that the next project they wanted to do for the car was a complete RideTech suspension.
At that point I told them that if they would do the swap in the parking lot in front of our booth that I would give them the complete suspension. We happened to have the Chevelle display chassis at that show with all of our stuff on it so it was a matter of unbolting the display stuff and installing it on their car. They accomplished this in 3 hours and 6 minutes. This was with no preparation, no “pre-disassembly” no WD40 on the bolts, nothing.
We also had the foresight to make a couple of autocross runs before we did the swap for a baseline performance comparison. After the installation was complete we went out again.

16 SECONDS FASTER!

The "before" run was 1:30. After the install…1:14. This was with the same rock hard tires, same drum brakes, same bench seat and no power steering, and with no shock tuning, no air pressure tuning, and no frontend alignment. [It was also with the oem spindles because our taller spindles wouldn't work with their drum brakes]

Yes, I was driving both times. No, I wasn't sandbagging on the before runs. [the video will make that clear!]
Car Craft Magazine and Popular Hotrodding Magazine covered the whole thing. We also have a full video that Scott is editing right now. I’ll get that up asap.

As for verification...Jeff Smith, David Freiburger, Rob Kinnan, Steven Rupp, Nick Licata, Johnny Hunkins, Henry De Los Santos, Sean Haggai and probably several other magazine editors saw it all happen.

And now, in the name of complete shameless self promotion...here is the stuff he put on: http://www.ridetech.com/store/suspension-systems/vehicle-packages/1968-1972-gm-a-body-level-3.html

Impressive! You guys have proven over and over that your stuff works in the real world, which has kept it at the top of my list should I ever save enough coin to afford such things. I understand you guys have put out some more budget oriented stuff, so I might need to take a look again... otherwise, I'm just gonna have to live with hacking coils, de-arching leafs, installing lowering blocks, and ruing every speed bump and pot hole.

One day though... one day...

That is both generous and impressive I must say.

Hey, that's great! It's really nice to see a test where variables were actually isolated for a change. While there is some chance Bret got a bit more used to the track later in the day, it's about as straightforward as it can get.

Other companies . . . that shall remain nameless . . . do before and after comparison tests only to dilute their own results by putting on a way more aggressive wheel and tire combination.

Good job, Ridetech!

I'll add that I had been making laps since Friday morning...at that point probably 25 of them...so I had grown accustomed to the track by that time. As a comparison our 66 Chevelle [same suspension but many laps of shock tuning, alignment tuning, air pressure and tire pressure tuning, as well as a new 500 horse LS3 engine] was running a 1:07. Velocity [same tuning parameters as our Chevelle] was running a 1:05.
To further put this in context, I was making laps in Velocity in the rain Friday morning at 1:10.

Honestly...I did not expect this much improvement. I had privately predicted a 10 second improvement, and considered that to be bragging.

I'll take it!

The 3 link rear suspension in my1969 sunoco camaro is made up w/lots of your ridetech parts. My new 1972 camaro project has your ploy bushings in the rear 4 link that I built for it.I got those part for winning last year. And this year I am using my certificate to get even more parts to finish my 72 camaro. Thanks you for making the goodguys event alot of fun and also very rewarding. Thanks Scott Mock.

No surprise here as the RideTech bits are incredible. It's cool to see the growth of this company over the years and also the dedication and support that Bret gives us.

Very cool ...

Come to think of it, I should cash in those Good Guys certificates and get some goodies.

Brett I have your stuff on the Black Pearl but the only way I can drop 16 seconds is to get Finch to drive it..must be driver failure or the fact I do not have one of your aero dynamic gas cap on it and getting drag from the old 67 gas cap...lol. Congrads and your stuff is top notch..just gotta learn how to use it to its fullest potential.
