I changed the points on the chevelle this weekend. I started it up and now its misfiring. It will idle fine but when I start to move it is when it misfires. This is my first experience with points and dont know anything about them. Do I need to adjust the dwell?

without a dwell meter its going to be tough....just make sure your gap is to spec.

A dwell meter works great, and really is the best way to do it, but there are many other point ignitions that run great on merely a gap setting.
My guess is that your gap is off or you have something shorting. Recheck it, and make sure the wiring isn't grounding anywhere when the vac advance comes in.

I don't know if this is something you would conisder but how about switching to an electronic ignition.

A dwell meter/tach is at most $20 at any parts store. If memory serves me right, 24-26 degrees is where you want your dwell angle. But I'd opt to deal without that headache and get yourself a Pertronix kit for around 100 bones. plug gap .035 for points and .045 for any other HO ignition.

Thanks guys. Im getting a dwell meter tomorrow. Ive got a pertronix kit sitting in my tool box, I'm just waiting to get new wires and everything else.
More than likely the points are bouncing at higher RPM's all points were notorious for this. I wouldn't even know were to find a good set of points today. If your looking to keep the original look of the points distributor then use a Protronix replacement/HEI module they bolt right in in about 10 minutes and work reasonably well for a street application below 5000 RPM.

You can use a matchbook to set your gap.
