I'm trying to fit some 17x9 275's up front...do I have to change the sub frame, or can I buy some diff. control arms that will give me better clearance...right now I'm running coil QA1's up front...with a welded up stock lower...and a tub. upper...I really don't car if I have lock to lock with a little rubbing...this would happen only when I'm trying to park in a tight space...any help would be great:cheers:

should be fine with the right back space....but I'd recommend a nice set of Hotchkis lower arms to get you some caster without running into your inner fender.

I have 17x9 with 275/40 all around no rubbing, my car is not lowered as of yet, but I don't anticipate a problem.

The backspacing is key on this I believe 4 7/8 is the magic number
for proper fitting on the front. My car is a 81 Trans Am for reference.

Look over at NastyZ28.com. There's been a lot of discussion about tire fitment.

Alot of the exact backspace depends on the exact wheel. When I autocrossed my 79 Camaro with really wide 16" road race slicks the tie rod end was the limiting factor for the thin steel wheels I was using. Thinner steel or spun aluminum will be different than a thicker cast wheel in those areas.

Firebirds typically have more generous wheel wells front and rear. I don't know if that 275/40-17 is going to fit a Camaro but I have seen a few running that combo with a Firebird.

Hi,

New here to. I just put 18 x9 Rushforth Tropers on the front of my 80 Camaro with a 275 35 18 Nitto NT05. The back space is 5 1/2 on the front rims.

You will need to change the control arms to the tube ones designed for more tire clearance. At that point the steering lock issue comes from the sway bar. I lost only a little steering lock.

The other issue is the uppers with 5 degrees of caster (which you want) will push the tire to the rear of the wheel well and cause clearance issues at the rear. To fix this you need a lower control arm that has caster built into it also. This helps center the wheel.

I am using Dave's upper and lower arms from PTFB. They have 5 degree built in to the uppers and 2 degrees built into the lowers.

The other thing you will need to check is tie rod clearance. As the 18's I have put the tie rod with in the rim so I did not have to worry about the tie rods and back space issues.
