1966 Nova. I have owned this car for 12 years and am just now getting to build my dream car.
It is currently at Detroit Speed and I am working with them on fitment for 66 and 67 Nova's.
Plan is to have a road race inspired car with a new age flare. Rendering and more pics to come.
How it sat for the last 10 years.

Thanks guys... I will absolutely keep everyone up to date with pics and progress. Just kind of tough right now because I rely on DSE to send me the pics.
The rear end is going in now and I hope lots of pics are being taken of the car as they go. I will be flying out to see the car and meet the guys out at DSE. Ive been talking with all the guys out there and Kyle the owner and I must say I have been treated very good up to this point.
I do have to say.... Not just because its on my car.... But that front end is probably one of the best looking front ends on the market. That goes for camaros, novas and all the front ends and parts they sell. Im very excited for the outcome.
Rendering will be done by Carter Hickman of www.carterhickmandesigns.com (http://www.carterhickmandesigns.com) later this month. Once I get that I will post a pic of it. Im going for the road race look but yet still be up to date. Not really sure how to describe it yet but once the rendering is done Ill post it.
Stay tuned for more.

Yes sir shipped it all the way out to NC from So Cal.
If anyone needs a company for auto shipping DeMoise Trucking out of South Carolina was awesome. Just FYI.
Hopefully I will make it out to NC within the month. I hate to eat part of the budget up flying out there but I think it would be pretty cool to see the operation and visit. We will see but most likely I will go.

Nice - they are about 30 mins from my place. You'll be flying to Charlotte.
Look for US Airways flight as Charlotte is there biggest Hub! You should be able to save some coin that way.

Bonecrrusher thanks for the flight info. The wife asked if I found anything yet. I will take a look at that. Also wasnt sure where to fly into but now I know. Thanks.
Here is a pic of my car with the owner of DSE Kyle Tuckers 700 horse LS motor. They are using it to build the motor mounts. He thought he would send a teaser pic of his motor in my car. Looks bad ass just wish I had it. Soon enough I guess.

So I have a few updates to post. Some of the updates are hard to see but they are there. Essentially the outer wheel houses are installed and are completely new and even stretched a bit to hopefully accomodate the biggest tire possible. The front end is installed and all the parts to include a new core support are being test fitted.
Currently the mini tubs are going in, the trunk floor is being repaired from rust and holes, and soon the trans tunnel will be dialed in. Oh and not to mention the install of the quadralink. Almost forgot that.
Driver side. Hard to see the outer wheel house but its there.

Drivers side wheel house and repair work to fender lip. You should have seen it before. Got messed up and those boys fixed it real nice.

What type of motor mounts are you using, and does this clip set the engine in the stock location? I want to move it back so the front of the balancer is even with the centerline of the front wheels.
malbright
10-17-2010, 10:15 AM
The mounts are an LS1 mount and DSE is handling that portion but I believe they are an LS1 mount and they my understanding is that the motor is in its stock location.
As for moving the motor back that far obviously there is the fab work to the firewall to make it fit but I am sure if you work with DSE they can assist you in making that happen. The guys at DSE are truly knowledgable and are very willing to help. Moving the motor back might really be a good thing because I know an LS motor in these cars is very tight up front. Getting that motor back would really help out in so many other areas of the build. And since the front ends are built to order I dont see an issue why something couldnt be worked out to accomodate your needs. If you call DSE ask for Mark in sales. He is very helpfull and very sharp on the product. Really any guy in there could assist you just fine I just have dealt with Mark the most. Ive bugged them enough since they have my car if you mention Marc Albright they might say "oh great" hahahaha.
Anyway if you I have to talk with Kyle (owner) this week and can ask him if they can accomodate your needs. He is very easy to deal with and very helpfull. Good luck and let me know.

A few updates on my car. Progress is coming along nicely over at DSE. I was able to make it back to Mooresville about a month ago and was EXTREMELY pleased with the work and how the car looked.
The chassis work is done with the exception of a cage, will do at home, and DSE is still in the process of developing a prototype header for the Chevy II front ends. Once that is done there are a few more items that Im hoping to add to the list this week and after that she gets shipped home for completion. Again I am so happy and pleased with the everything has turned out and feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with DSE.
Updated parts list:
TKO-600 Transmission (yet to be purchased)
NEWGEN 3 piece lite wheels (Yet to be purchased)
DSE narrowed fuel tank
MAST Motorsports LS3 416 (subject to change but will be a MAST)

malbright

Those headers will be for the front clip as that design is really the only thing that fits based on the amount of room. The price I wouldn't want to say because they havnt posted or made it available yet and I wouldn't want to qoute anything for them. They are sick and look even better in person. They are stainless as well.

Awesome progress....I would go with a little wider rear tire if DSE can squeeze one in, those look a bit narrow....I thought you mini-tubbed it? lol
That is the biggest tire that I can squeeze in there. Thats a 315/30/18 that will fit in there. In fact that is mini tubbed and those wheel houses are even massaged beyond what DSE sells as a stock mini tub. We tried to get the biggest tire possible in there as most would and as mentioned its even bigger than what would have been in there without massaging those wheel houses. I believe the biggest you could fit on there without further modification is either a 295. On Kyle's 63 that is a 295 because its a pretty narrow rearend on those Chevy II's. We were trying for a 335s but we came up short by about 1/4" and there really was no more room short of messing with the design of the quadralink. Im very happy with the way it came out. Sure the 335 would have been nice but you can only do what you can do.

You know they really are. I don't just say that because I've been able to work with them on a prloject but because of the inovation and technology they bring to our hobby. I didn't realize the magnitude of their involvement until I took a trip back to their shop in january. They really do alot for our hobby and I can't tell you the quality of work they turn out. They have cars in the shop that will never be photographed for public view per customer request but their work is amazing really is top notch. Always interested in some feedback. Remember from the first post.... I am shooting for a retro SCCA "style" car had they built a Nova for racing back then. All while trying to keep a little new age flare or style in the car. I do plan to auto cross and bring this car to events to be used.

Hey Jeff,
Good to see more novas being built. It seems these years are few and far between. If your going to be doing the same treatment and you run across any questions feel free to shoot me a message. My car was used as the R & D car for DSE and their suspension parts on the 6 and 7 novas. They are slightly different than the 2 thru 5 cars for mounting purposes. Actually if you order a rear kit the car in the install video will be my car. Ive spent alot of time on the phone with the guys at DSE and even took a trip back there in January. Im by no means an expert and they are obviously the first place to go for product questions but if I can help in any way by all means shoot me a message.

Its been awhile since I posted some pics and its really because the I am a one man show building the car now and my time has been pulled in so many different directions its been hard to get a ton of work done. Not to mention I just finished the cage so that took a lot longer than anticipated. I will be posting more pics very soon for all you nova lovers.
The cage came out awesome. I managed to build it all myself at the house and had a buddy finish it off with some sweet tig welds. For all you So Cal guys Chassis Design Co. in Riverside, although it is a motorcylce shop they have so much in the way of fab equipment and talent in welding and fab work. Would be worth the stop if you were looking for some help.

Well its been quite awhile since I posted some pics and truthfully these pics are about a month old and progress has been slower than desired but its still coming along. I have a few things in the works behind the scenes and although the work on the car has slowed down there are a few things being done as we speak.
Thanks to Jon at Driverz Inc. my wheels are almost completed and Im very excited to see them done.
Working on picking up a Vintage air kit from Jon as well and thats the next project.
As for the pics and the cage Im am very happy with the way it came out and I am very glad it is done. I did do the cage myself and it was my very first one and I think it is brutally strong. If you notice the rocker bars are my "floor plates" and support the entire cage. In talking with the boys at DSE we kind of came up with the idea to do this and that this would add a ton of strength to a car that is already weak in flexing. Not to mention I think it would be impossible to push that whole bar through the floor.

These plates run through the floor and are rosette welded to the rocker underneath as you see and to the pinch weld inside the car. There are six of these plates on each side.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
This is the plate up top prior to welding to the rocker bar. There was a gap between the pinch weld and the rocker bar and not only was this a way to fill the gap I felt running them through the floor would only add strength to the car

Nice looking cage and nice fab work!
Just a piece of info for anyone looking at this. SCCA, NASA and NHRA do not allow a double bend in tha main hoop support bars. Bars going from the main hoop to the trunk area. With that said most events do not require a cage or roll bar.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
I dont know what the plans for the seats are yet. Ive actually done a ton of thinking about it and have not come up with an idea yet.
Syborg... I love the idea and I would love to do that however it I tried to simulate that with a borrowed seat and it seems as if the seat would sit rediculously high in the car. I really want the seat to sit as low as possible so I am still working on it and I also dont know what to do with the bar and the trans tunnel if I were to float it. Hands down that would be the nicest and coolest way in my mind to do it.
Any other ideas? I want it to sit low, be strong, and I do have sliders from sparco. All ideas are welcome.
Also just a word of warning. Your experience may be different but in this community its all about sharing info right? The customer service I received from Wedge Engineering was some of the WORST service ever and it was one of thee most poorly made products around. I only pass it on as a word of caution to all. Im not telling you where to shop but just know that their products are less than worthy of the money they charge and the service they provided.... well it got me to write this about them. Your call.

Nice looking cage and nice fab work!
Just a piece of info for anyone looking at this. SCCA, NASA and NHRA do not allow a double bend in tha main hoop support bars. Bars going from the main hoop to the trunk area. With that said most events do not require a cage or roll bar.
Hey Bryce,
Yeah that was a concern for a moment but the reality is that this car will be used as a street car as well and I still want the back seat functional. That being said I am going to use my car and absolutely plan on running as many events as I can make it too. I know that there is no "rules" as of now for autocross events however I am also of the opinion that will not stay that way forever. Catch 22 I guess in that there are the rules and there is the funtional aspect of the car for daily use. Tough call I just hope it stays in my favor.

I absolutely understand. Build the car for its intended use. Any well built cage will be safer than no cage.

Instead of using slider you can use a piece of flat stock floating front to back. Make the seat fixed mounted & set for you similar to a race car.
The only draw back would be rear seat entry if your plan is to put a back seat in the car. If that is the plan then 86 the center consule and have your friends climb in down the center of the car.
Also make sure you have multiple holes drilled in it that will allow you to move the seat forward or backward. This will allow the seat to be adjusted if you eer sell the car.

The center console is not going to be some elaborate piece. I have thought to use 1" tubing for the seat mount to float the seat and still be able to use the sliders. As for the center console my thought was to have the 1" tube tie into the floor half way through the floor and half in the car. By doing this I could then incorportate a driveshaft safety loop off of the tubing. I still think it would allow me to keep the seat low enough and still take advantage of the floating seat mount. I may not need to notch the floor but that was a thought if I needed the room. Still needs to be explored before a decision is made. Just thinking.

Subscribing! Amazing build any new updates? Is there any fitment issues with those 295-9.5" on the front of that suspension? Turning radius? Fender clearance? DSE's website shows 245 or 255 tire size as a recommended size. If those massive tires fit up front without any issue I'm saving the extra dough and going with a DSE frontend!!!!!!!

Well I said that I would post my rendering when I get it done. I want to give a big thanks to Carter Hickman of Carter Hickman Designs for an absolutely awesome rendering. I never thought of my car looking the way that it does in this rendering but I have to say I love it.
Always interested in some feedback. Remember from the first post.... I am shooting for a retro SCCA "style" car had they built a Nova for racing back then. All while trying to keep a little new age flare or style in the car. I do plan to auto cross and bring this car to events to be used.

Hey mike,
Sorry for the delay but we just had our first kid and my attention has been diverted elsewhere. As for your questions I can say there is no clearance issues in the front with the 295. If you ask them they will not tell you that they will fit. I believe the biggest on the 6 & 7's they will claim is a 275 but the 295 turns great and has no clearance issues. If you have any questions shoot me a PM with a number and I'd be happy to answer any questions in regards to the front end. I will say hands down DSE products are the best quality products in every aspect on the market. Love the product the service and the look. They also give the best and lowest stance which is adjustable on the market and still maintaining performance.

Well I know its been awhile since I posted any updates but I have been super busy and haven't really had the time to post any updates. There have been a few, although slow Im still chugging along. Tough when your solo and learning but it's going good. Brakes are installed and still toching up a few fab projects which seem to be the most time consuming.
Jon at NEW GEN WHEELS should have my wheels done very very soon and is also supplying my Vintage Air which should be here very soon as well. In the process of looking for a T56 Magnum, and in talks with Mike Norris about motor combos. Of course the boys at DSE are still in the mix supplying knowledge as well as parts.
Here are a few pics, not very exciting but something right?

Thanks... Its alot of work as many here already know. The things we do for hot rods. The cage took almost 2.5 months (due to work schedule) to complete. Im hoping with the purchase of some new parts it will seem as if the car is really progressing.

Still have a few more things like the lines to run and some other various odds and ins. Brake lines and fuel lines are coming up next along with seat mounts and speaker mounts up front. Trying to get all the fab work done to minimize cutting and grinding later when she looks pretty.

Not to derail the thread, but I hope you weren't a victim of the recent issues.
The car is looking great. When I get around to giving my '67 the DSE treatment I may reach out to you for some info on wheel fitment etc.. Keep up the good work!
Believe me its been a concern of mine and to some degree I have been caught up in it.... But only to the extent of a slight delay on finish time. I had ordered the A/C through Jon just before the latest events and Jon came through as he said he would. I have been in contact with Jon quite frequently and he has been very attentive to this point and I have absolutely no reason to believe he won't come through. I can't speak to anybody elses status and don't intend to start a big discussion about this other than to say try and understand his position. He makes a living off of our dime, has a family to support and I'm sure the last thing he wants is to tank his reputation.
So the answer is yes... But not concerned.
Now.... Back to the build. :usa:

Hey don't feel bad about the comment. In some respects I'm glad it got brought up but I just dont plan on making the rest of thread about. Sometimes we all need to step back and look at all sides and all circumstances involved.
As far as the project I wish it was moving a bit faster. It's moving but it's a learning process everyday. Good news is the fab work portion is moving along nicely and a lot of it is nearing completion.

I'm using a stock reproduction support. Fits perfect on the DSE front end and they are so hidden on these cars I can't see fab-in one at this point.

Well thanks for inquiring. All is ok not fantastic but ok. Not a pitty story but both the wife and I are employed by city and county agencies and the pay is not what it was 2 years ago. So, the project has slowed down.
I'm at a point to where I need to purchase the remainder of the bigger items such as trans, fuel tank, radiator, tires, gauges, etc. So since its all big items I've gone back to building my funds. I started a business about the time things slowed down and it's going good and I'm starting to expand and gain new clientele. Hopefully that stays strong, if so I can hopefully get back to the car real soon. I'm determined not to give up on it but rather push to get it done. I've sought out some unique sponsorship ideas but have not had the success I was hoping for quite yet. My timeline is fuzzy now but it will get done.

Im not sure what they used for mock up. Not sure if you followed my build or story from the get go, but my car went back to DSE for some R&D on their front and rear kits for 66 and 67 novas. I know there were a few minor fitment issues with these kits orginally, (not now of course) and I have no idea how that changed mock up. My cross member is a custom built cross member by DSE. If you go to their website and click on projects, scroll 3/4 the way down the page and you will see Marc Albrights 1966 nova and they have pics in there that show my cross member and you can get a good idea as to where it is placed in the car. If you have any other questions Id be happy to help you any way that I can.

Well things are good thank you for asking.
As far as updates I'm sorry to say I don't really have any. I have completed a few projects like the a/c and seat mounts but not to much else going on right now. I should be getting my wheels on the 13th of the month, but as far as moving forward. I really need some help on a few things at this point that I don't have the ability to do, ie brake lines and some initial mock up and placement of wiring, as well as a few custom fab pieces. The other thing right now is time and money. My business is picking back up so the money is getting better but since a kid and a wife that works full time it's tough to get things done especially with no help. But, I plan to see this through and finish the car I just can't give a timeline. Not to many guys around me understand the cLiber of car I'm building so finding good, not free, but inexpensive help is tough. Ahhh the joys of life but I will succeed.

Well after a long hiatus due to family and work, #projectfullcircle is back under construction. For the probably 2 people that actually followed my build know where this car has been and its journey. With the help from detroit speed the car became a rolling chassis, now with a more local builder here in Cali it will finally be finished.
