I got a call from my body shop telling me that i needed to get some new lower door hinges for my 67' Camaro. I figured that it might happen due to being over 35' years old. But when i went to Camaro Concepts in Houston they told me that the reproduction lower door hinges are ****. He would not even sell them to me. He said i should try to fix mine or find some old ones that need to be rebuilt. My question is this is the first dealing i have had with hinges. Is this true or are they just pulling my leg? They said they will work for about 6 months and then i would have to replace them again. Has anyone else had this problem?
Thanks
Matthew

I put new pins, bushings, and rollers in mine. Should last a while. I'd fix 'em, it's cheap and easy.

If the holes are worn oblong you car weld and redrill so the bushing fits in there. The bushing has to fit tight or will wear out the bushing quickly.

I put repro hinges on my 67 that I got from D&R and they have been opened and closed at least as many times as if it was a year of normal use and they seem to be fine still. Maybe driving the car messes with them or something else but I can't see them wearing out prematurely unless you don't use lubricant on them.
I don't believe that there are two different brands of repros but there might be. I would call D&R and see if they come from a different place ?

If your gonna weld, be sure to create a template to transfer the existing hole location (for hinge pin) and hinge perimeter profile to the template so you can transfer the hole location back to the hinge once welded up. If its oblong, most likely a new bushing will fit in the oblong hole and not move much. Use that as a guide to transfer the ID of the hole location to the template, it will be very close.
How are the detent rollers that the spring pivot arm ride upon? Those get sloppy.

I should have made it more clear, I only used the lower repro hinges. The uppers I rebuilt the originals too because the repros were not right to begin with. The lowers still look and work fine from what I can see.
