View Full Version : Should I do a 2-tone on my 71 Chevelle or not?

Hey guys, posted this over at Team Chevelle but I thought I would get the pro-touring opinion also.

Check out the rendering of my chevelle. What do you think about a 2-tone on a 71 chevelle. I'm going to be painting my car soon and I was thinking about the original cottonwood green, or that on top and a gun metal gray on the bottom. The 2 pictures show the dividing line in different places.

Opinions?

Thanks

I also think the high line looks better.

No.

I think both of the designs are boring and will "date" the car. Kinda like when the Street Rodders got into 2 tone paint schemes and pastel colors. They looked "cool" for a short time and now look very dated and almost cartoonish.

I am not saying that your choice of color or two tone design looks "cartoonish" by any means. I am just using that period of time in Street Rod world as an example of a short term fad that took over for a short time and is now dead. There are better choices with the clean lines of a Chevelle in my opinion and that's what you asked for!

Couldn't agree more. It costs way too much cash to paint a car and the down time to redo it because it is out of style is not worth it. Paint it solid then it is timeless.

There should be more choices. Maybe a mod can fix it.

1) No
2) Option 1 (low beltline)
3) Option 2 (high beltline)
4) Option 1 with different colors
5) Option 2 with different colors
6) Other

If I had to choose 1 0r 2 it would be 2 with different colors. But if other was an option, I really liked the Ricky-Bobby paint job. Shake and Bake!

I have been thinking of the high line myself.

also did you do the photo shop with a program on house of colors?

I like the one on the right, the second one. It follows the body lines is a seamless way and isn't trendy so it shouldn't go out of style in the near future.
Or you could paint it one solid boring color and be like everyone else. :spank2:

I did the picture with house of kolors virtual paint booth software. It's a really good way to find out what colors look good together. I'm really liking that high break line and I really like the gray look with the original cottonwood green. Maybe I'll play around with some other grays. The more I look at the pictures the more I think grayed out bumpers, door handles, etc with no chrome at all. That would be killer, I think.

Great comments so far, I'm glad I asked for opinions. Thanks

2 tone will date the car.
if you want to 2 tone it you can do this color scheme, just choose colors that blend better, slightly darker color on top, bottom make sure the grey has green tones in it.
The time / cost of the 2 tone you can pay the extra $ to go with a quality black, timeless paint job

2 tone will date the car.

Is 2 tone a famous rapper? And is it illegal to date a car, or does it depend on how old it is?

Nice one. you know what iM saying, true flames will be like scallops, and pastels, 2 tones will identify what approx year the car is painted. Just like Teal, just like Copper will be in a few years.
If you love copper or 2 tone - go for it.

That year Chevelle is not a good candidate for 2-tone in my opinion. Check out the green and gray 66-67 on Rushforth's site, that guy nailed the colors.

Ugh, solid colors are so dated....

There's nothing wrong with two-toned paint as long as its done right and with the right combination of colors. Find something that brings out the cars lines rather than conflicts or dulls them.

Basically it comes down to personal choice. If you come up with a design that you like, go with it and too hell with everyone else. Who's car is it anyway? lol

Vinyl wrap the lower half, then peel it off when the fad passes. Double as a stone chip gaurd.
