I am looking for wheels for my 1968 Camaro. I don't know squat about wheels, never had to buy them before.

I really like the look of the 3 piece wheels. Any suggestions on where to go for a good wheel for a good price?

Why a 3 piece wheel vs any other type of wheel?

What is the budget and style? 3 piece are expensive, plain and simple. There are some 2 piece wheels out there that look like 3 piece for a little less, but your not going to find them for the price even close to a cast wheel

Well thats kind of my fundamental question.

I mean is it worth it? Why?

I would like to stay somewhere around $1500 for all 4 wheels. I know that won't buy me the top of the line wheels.

Do I need to change my budget? Why?

Do I need to change my budget? Why?Unfortunately that will not come close to buying 3 piece wheels, or even many 2 piece wheels.

3 piece wheels are made from machining 6061 billet into wheel centers and then bolting them into the hoops. The different manufacturing process cost of hardware to assemble, labor to hand assemble each wheel, and more limited sale of 3 piece wheels drives the price way up. 2 piece wheels are similar in construction except the center is welded to the hoop, which makes for faster assembly, with still same high quality materials. Cast wheels are made by pouring molten aluminum into a mold, allowing for very high production numbers and minimal machine time, no manual labor to assemble resulting in a wheel much cheaper to produce. Many are made overseas, especially by the larger manufacturers, but some are made here in the US.

Your budget would probably get you into some Billet Specialties, or something similar, otherwise your gonna have to raise your budget quite a bit to get a set of 3 piece wheels. You can also look at several companies that make 2 pc wheels that resemble 3 pc for a little less money, but still over your budget. What sizes are you looking for? Anything over 10" wide out back considerably adds to the cost of the wheels

Well that sucks....

I guess I need to up my budget, or find something else.

I am running 275-35-18 in the rear, so not super wide.

Are 3 piece wheels lighter? stronger? What makes the price point so much higher aside from the manufacturing costs?

Thanks again Mike, you are probably the quickest and most helpful sponsor on this site.

i am going with MOZ brand 3 piece. lots of styles too. most all 3 piece wheel makers get their barrels from the same manufacturer, so for the most part any 3 piece wheels will have nearly the same rim halves (smooth or stepped lip) and the manufacturer (hre, bbs, asanti, moz, forgeline, etc) only designs and machines their own centers and may or may not do custom stamped bolts.
i plan to purchase from custom wheels direct in cali. 19x10f and 20x13r in chrome or mill finish (i am gonna finish them myself) for $3600 shipped. might sound expensive considering your $1500 budget, but that is bargain basement on a full custom built, offset, 3 piece wheel!! priced out the same wheel and sizes locally, $5600 was their "sale" price. with 275/30 and 345/25/20 nitto invo's, the package was $5100 shipped. hre would be in the $8-9k range for the same sizes. same barrels, but still forged, cnc centers.
anyone looking for wheels should look them up.

nothing i hate more than seeing a car that someone has wrapped $100k into to make bad ass, then do cheap ass wheels!!! think of wheels as one of the most important purchases for your car, not just something to do last. it is my first purchase for my car, and the car will be built around them.

i have theory on what makes a car look good-
1. stance- you can have a crap car, with stock wheels, and you get the stance right and it will look cool
2. you already have stance, so next is wheels. you can be dented, rusted and no interior, and it can look menacing with the right stance and wheels.
3. paint- you got your stance, your wheels, get a nice paint job on it and rock the asphalt!!

do it in that order, and you can't help but have a cool car!!

Don't overlook used wheels. If you are patient and keep your eyes open in the classifieds you can come across wheels with low or zero miles, often at a good discount. Sometimes vendors post sets that were ordered and never delivered. It just takes a little patience.

Don't leave out CCW 3-piece wheels! Their "Classic's" are a great wheel at agreat price. I think my 18" wheels came in right around $2,800 for the set. Not too bad for a nice 3-piece wheel..

Yeah Scot, CCW wheels are awesome wheels and they hold up to some real abuse. My buddy has a 72 T/A that he autocrosses and he puts that car to the test too. Those wheels hold up great and they are made for each application. John is a real nice guy too.

Jon, What's the price range of the wheels? When will they be out? I will be looking for 18x8's up front & 18x10's out back. I'm gonna be on a tight budget. I might even go with 17x9 up front & 17x10-11 out back.

if you're going to stick to your $1500 budget, here are some 2PC wheels that will fit that range:

billet specialties: http://www.billetspecialties.com/
centerline: http://centerlinewheels.com/
prowheels: http://www.prowheels.net/
raceline: http://www.racelinewheels.com/

there are vendors on this site that sell all four. shop around for the best price.

there are a handful of 3PC wheels that can be had for under $3K. not many, but a few.

Thanks,

It looks like $1500 was a little to optimistic. I think I could scrap together enough to spend $2800. But I really don't want to go over $3000.

These are what I want but four of these would cost $3,800, any suggestions?

I paid more for my wheels (no tires) than I did for my car......Now, the car was in pretty rough shape, but still an original RS/SS. The right wheels and stance is everything.

you can get forgeline in your sizes for a hair over 3K when ProdigyCustoms has one of their sales. it'd have to be in forgeline's "performance" line, which lucky for you, is where the ZX3 resides. and that's for a no frills forgeline wheel; meaning polished inners/outers/centers & standard hardware (not the race titanium ((lighter)) hardware).

CCW's are from $2450 to about $2800 for stuff that fits these cars. That would be 17" to 18" wheels.

I really like the Schott wheels. How are they priced?

If you're after the 3 piece look, but want cheaper pricing, we can do our 3 piece styles into a 2 piece. This would definitely fit into your $2800 budget (including powdercoated centers if you wanted to go that route). Gives you the look of 3 piece without the price. We can also do a true 3 piece wheel for just a tad over your budget in 18's. Feel free to take a look at both our two piece and 3 piece styles. You'll find the link in my signature. If you have any questions feel free to send me a PM. I can also provide you with better pricing than you'll find on the websites.

Call Frank at prodigy customs and get some Forgelines, or whatever you really like. Save up some extra $ and get what you want the first time. That way you won't regret your decision and end up changing your mind a month later.

call guys at MC3, they should be able to build forged 3 piece wheels in your budget, I called them today to check a price on a set of 19x8 and 20x13 with 7 inch rear lip ,custom finish ,price was just little over $3000. 3-4 weeks build time .

I was at CCW last week with a customer placing order on a set of 18x12 and 8, I think the total was either $2400 or 2600 for a set of 3 piece LM20with black anodized center and brushed and cleared barrel , those guys have some major inventory, rows and rows of shelves stacked with wheels, bunch of pallets of blanks and forgings.
