removing upper control arms

I recently purchased tubular upper control arms for my 69 camaro. Ive gotten to the point where the upper is disconnected from the spindle and ive taken off all the nuts and bolts holding it down but im having trouble sliding it off...

is there a trick to removing the control arms that i dont kow. it seems to be unable to slide off without running into the headers or brake lines. any ideas?

A pry bar will become your best friend.

Also did you remove the bolts out of the frame too? If so you can try that.

I managed to take mine off with some leverage, bleeding knuckles, every bad word in the dictionary and using my sweat as eye drops.

Remove the header, might help. But on my car it will still hit the steering shaft. I just pounded the bolt out of the frame, this was easier than removing the header and steering components.

I m with Mike,
gotta push the studs throught...they have serations near the end. Put the nuts on till they are flush with the stud and use a short socket and short extension. If you don't have the room then don't use the socket or extension.

While wearing safety glasses and a face shield gently tap on the extension with a small hammer. It does not take a lot of force to do this. Just repetion. They will come loose.

Push the studs back just far enough to slide the arms out.

got them out!

i finally decided to stop being lazy and just remove the exhaust headers. a little annoying but gave just enough room to remove the control arms. thanks for the input everyone!
