Flying firebird crash this morning on I675

Doing about a 100 flew past a cop and launched off a guardrail into an overpass support. Car dissintigrated, driver in critical.

The front of the car is in the top pic of the OP. And I agree, that was awesome. I cannot believe that he lived through that. I guess they piled the dirt up a little too much on the ends of that guardrail?...I know they did that around here to keep the ends of the guardrails from becoming a spear...but man, it sure did launch him skyward making the guard rail ineffective at keeping the car off the bridge.

It looks like the car literally gets cut in half from the overpass pillar...I know they say he's in ICU but wonder if he lost any limbs based on how the car looks...dude has to be messed up. He's going to be regretting that move the rest of his life!

I-75 is far worse, I think they stopped reporting them. I drove I-75 to 25 miles north everyday for 6 years and major accidents are a daily occurance. They are in process of fixing one problem area at the route 4 interchange though. I drive 675 now north to I-70 daily and rush hour is the only time it gets dicey.

Check out the video just as the dust clears. Fully 2/3 of the column has been wiped out at the base of the lateral beam, rendering the column useless. The lateral concrete beam, in cantilever, is the only thing holding up the span.

One 200' bridge: $3M. One 1983 f-bird on a suicide mission: $850. What a trade.

Looks like the concrete column's only damage is a black smear at the top of the column right under the cantilevered concrete beam. Slow the vid down really slow and take another look. The base of the column has a weed or something there that looks like possible damage, but I don't think it is....unless i'm missing something.

I'm not sure how to embed this video, but if you look at the silver car in the slow lane, you will notice he is braking towards the end to avoid something...that something is the driver. With the higher resolution video above you can see him flying through the air, then landing and rolling towards the shoulder of the road.

How that kid is still alive is unreal.....that would have been terrible to survive that awful impact and then end up getting run over by a car on the shoulder of the Interstate.

It's probably a good thing the car crunched like an accordion. That's a massive amount of force that was absorbed.
