View Full Version : What? An AMC?!?

Hi everyone. Just joined up. I am an avid AMC fan and currently own a few, but like pretty much anything with four wheels. The car I'm going to be turning into more of a Pro-Touring vehicle is my 77 Matador coupe. It's a fun cruiser now which I'll be building up a bit more built up as time goes on. Nothing crazy, just some mods to make it cruise better, as well as handle and be just a bit quicker.

It's currently running 304 backed by a column-shifted 727 and a 3.15 geared Model 20 rear. The front has been redone and poly bushings added, but that's about it for suspension work. Plans that are going to happen soon are: a built 360, possibly a 4 speed trans, 3.54s in the rear, new springs all around, poly bushings out back and fat sway bars front and rear. I currently have factory 15" ralley wheels on it, but have another set of rims I'm putting back on. They were on the car before, but I need longer wheel studs to run them. They're Weld Draglite XPs in size 15x8 front and 15x10 rear. Tires are 265/50-15s and 295/50-15s respectively. The car looks GOOOOOD with them, so I want to get them back on soon.

What's in the future? Well, when I can afford it, it's getting a stroked 401 that I've been gathering parts for (about 422"), an overdrive stick trans, some 4.10s out back and some 17" rims with the biggest rubber I can stuff under the body. I'm also thinking of some body mods. Nothing outrageous, but I might pull the bumpers, maybe graft in some 69 Camaro front lights into the valance, things like that.

Here's a couple pictures of the car now and a couple with the Welds on it. You'll notice in the pics with the Welds, it sits a little off. It needs to be a little lower in the front (A/C parts are removed for now, so it sits a little high) and a speck taller in the rear (the rear springs sag BAD). Let me know what you think.

Mmmmmm. Love matadors.

Years ago, there was a red matador in my hometown of fayetteville NC, that had the bumpers removed and replaced by roll pans, and it was dropped low over some wide deep 15's (nobody had 17's back then.) I wonder what happened to it...

Welcome, I went to the Mopar Nationals in Columbus last week just to see the Ramblers, I was looking to see some late 60s Javelins and AMX's, no Javelins but I saw four AMX's, it made my day.

You may want to contact Randy Johnson at D&Z Customs about a 401 he is taking out of a project car. Could be a great deal as it is complete from air cleaner to oil pan with the starter and headers too. (262) 347-9741.
By the way, cool car! It's always nice to see someone doing something a little different.

Looks like you have plenty of room in those wheel wells for some wide tires. Should make for a very interesting PT car
