View Full Version : would like opinions on build list

i have a 67 camaro i have been saving for a build for about 20 years. my plan 5 years ago was to get the wayne due brackets and do all c4 corvette suspension. well looks like i was late for that, lol.
second direction was a subframe (can't remember the company right now) that took all c5 suspension (which i have sitting here already with new rotors/pads) and looks like i was a little late on that one too!!

after lurking on the site alot lately have seen quite a few cars forgoing the extra expense of a new subframe and using the stock one with bolt on pieces.

my main goal of the car is more of a street fighter type car, but i never seem to have much extra time to hit the track much. maybe an autocross or 2, but will probably never see slicks on the car.

i would like to use the c5 stuff, but looks like i may only be able to use the brakes with adapters. i thoroughly read the original spindle sticky and think for my uses the stockers might be ok. please correct me if i am mislead. i do like to hit high speeds and would spend the dough if it eased my mind of bearing failure at 160mph!!

car originally came with a 230il with p/g. front brakes were drums. new motor will be ls and have an extra viper t56 sitting here needing a rebuild. wheel/tire combo- 18or19x11 front 275 20x13 rear with 345

here is the list i have come up with after searching-

1. upper and lower tube a-arms (if one brand is better than others or best bang for buck, please do tell) i am looking to put an 11" wheel in front and set my wheel offset to keep correct scrub radius. i plan on flaring all the fenders, so basically i am looking for arms probably longer than stock type to get all things in check if possible. custom made may be my only option here.

2. power rack and pinion (opting for the modified bolt in unit. if there are better solutions, please do tell)

3. tall ball joints. ppm's probably. opinions?

4. brake adapters for the c5 calipers. looks like i need c4 rotors though. thinking this option due to having the c5 stuff already, and rotors are cheap.

5. as far a springs, i did have a guy 20 years ago (when there was no such aftermarket parts for the car!) custom wind some 650lb iirc linear rate springs for the car, and 350lb iirc rear leafs. front sway bar is 1.25" and rear is 7/8". will be doing a 3-4link rear, so leafs will go, but thinking of keeping the front springs. already has subconnects and poly bushings in stock arms. in other words, i was protouring before anyone knew what the hell it was, lol. except guldstrand which already had his mod out but never got around to it!

6. shocks. konis or afco's. can get them in custom lengths so i can find a good match. not sure how much guys are seeing after a coilover swap over stock when shock valving and spring rates are correct on both setups, but not sure the extra dough is worth it to me. really need honest opinions on this, cause this could add a decent expence.

think that would about wrap up the front. so any opinions on anything i may have missed or may just be misinformed on (like compatibility with the ls engine space wise or header wise) or flat out better choices out there considering parts i already have would be GREATLY appreciated.
i am going to start ordering all my parts for the car very soon and with all the products out there now, it has been quite a gulp of info to even get this far! don't want to waste money yaknow!

thanks

Look for Detroit speed DSE Global west SPC or Speed tech

2. power rack and pinion (opting for the modified bolt in unit. if there are better solutions, please do tell)

Google UNISTEER Speed Tech uses them on their subframe and I read a article I Camaro performers looks like an A1 kit.

3. tall ball joints. ppm's probably. opinions?
Howe contact Marcus at www.scandc.com

4. brake adapters for the c5 calipers. looks like i need c4 rotors though. thinking this option due to having the c5 stuff already, and rotors are cheap.
Google kore3 or speed tech

650 front good I did my own 3 link follow link in my sig on bottom of my post for ideas ditch the poly front bushings and do del-a-lums
sway bars should be good but some mods to make them adjustable would help... ideas also in my 3 link build post
Dont toot your own horn to early pro-touring has been around along time just not named yet.

Penski koni afco Bilstien Pro shock Vari Shock Qa1 cant lose with these names But Vari shock and Qa1 dominate the search function on this site

Your last question about what you missed .. Plan on paper plan with programs plot geometry , prices and sources of material before you cut into your car...

thanks for the reply. checked out your thread on the 3 link. good low buck fabbing.
most of the parts you listed are ones i had my eye on and already found the best deals on all of it. yes, planning the full build on paper, and will be working in photoshop to come up with a body/wheel rendering to follow. been sick the last 4 days and nearly every minute in front of the computer researching for this project.
the protouring comment was a joke though, lol.

If you use Speedtech AFX spindles you can bolt on C5 brakes without adaptors and offset the cost of the spindles while making some good improvements.

Rack and Pinion conversion, no thanks, I will take a good steering box like a 600 or 670 box.

Tall ball joints? Not required with aftermarket arms and a Gulstrand redrill.

The only rack I would ever use is a woodward. All the OEM re-purposed stuff is junk. But there is nothing wrong with a box except for weight and header clearance with the pitman arm and idler.

Someone will have to inform Speedtech ~ Morrison and others about this repurposed junk. Frank shouldnt you stop selling the SpeedTech sub that uses that Conversion rack??? Just saying Be fair..

That's news to me! Bet you didn't know a few of the Panoz LMP07 protos used Mustang steering racks.

I know a thing or two about rack and pinions, and I'll tell you they aren't junk. I have no idea where you came up with that.

I am refering to the conversion. Speedtech relocates it a bit and built the frame around it.

ok, good to know. how much are those steering boxes? where to get? so if i got the afx tall spindles, and aftermarket arms, is the guldstrand redrill something that still needs to be done?
not needing the rack and parts associtated to make it work and not having to use brake adapters and new c4 rotors (so i can use my new c5 rotors i have) makes the afxspindles about a wash and a better idea all around.

ok new plan-

aftermarket arms
tall afx spindles (accepting my already purchased c5 brakes)
guldstrand mod?
600 or 670 steering box
keep my front springs
keep my front roll bar with adjustable end links
quality adjustable shocks

sound like a winner?

after more research looks like a simple iroc steering box is a decent way to go and they are pretty cheap!
thanks for the ideas guys. i am only $100 over my other parts list and will save more than that on ease of assembly and have a better safer car!

When I say junk I was refering to what Unisteer/steeroids and others use fo ra rear steer setup. Its a some GM j-car rack. This rack is not designed for a 225 wide tire, so what kind of deflection will you see with a 275 R compound tire.

Do mustang/corvette racks work yes. But those are front steer only. I am under the impression that a 67 camaro is rear steer. So a bolt in rack would not be my first choice for anything seeing high steering loads.

A woodward manual rack is around $500, a chassisworks pinto style rack is $400. When you compare the racks woodward has a much stronger pinion and rack and lighter case.

just got off the phone with tobin at kore3, and he was super helpful (and in oregon also an hour away!) and have to say their c6 z06 front brake deal is to good to pass up!! still able to keep it all within budget i had for the front suspension too.

anyone looking for a c5 front a-arms, hubs, spindles, new rotors and pads? lol

The only drawback to the C6 Z06 front brakes is it limits your wheel options. You might want to research the wheel fitment required to clear them before pulling the trigger on buying those brakes. You're probably going to be looking at some high end wheels to clear the calipers.

so do i. this thread knocked off about a month worth of forum reading/searching and tons of dough off of parts i probably would have replaced. thank the heavens for the fugging internet!!

looks like front, and rear suspension plus my wheels/tires will come in far below my projected at about $10k. pretty dam good considering wheels are 19x10 and 20x13 3 piece customs. looks like project is a go!

sorry had a brain fart. doing 19x10 with 275/30 front 20x13 345/25 rear. wheels are about the most important visual impact a car can make, so whatever i run into fitting them, is just whats gonna happen. visually i think the 67's look too narrow stock, so i am thinking the flares will help give it a wide stance. planning on widening the fender a little on the front, then an eyebrow type flare. the rear fenders will get widened 2-3" and then an eyebrow flare also. shooting for a widebody look with an oldschool eyebrow flare. looking at an 8" lip in the rear wheel. fronts will just be what they need to be to try to keep scrub radius in check. may need minor frame notching.

Steeroids shouldnt even be uttered in the same paragraph as Unisteer Or Flaming river... LOL That said The internals of the available conversion racks are plenty strong Ive heard of no catastrophic failures period. Besides the Inner rod end would bend before any internal damage could happen and that goes for woodward also.. That said Im running a Tom lee 600 box and love it..

wheels will be custom made 3 piece, no probs figuring it out

We builsd enough cars and sell enough wheels we can help you with that. You will be pushing the track out about 1" per side on the front, no scrub issues, and on the rear 1" would be enough to clear the mini tubs on the rear and to match the front. You might reconsider the 8" lip on th e rear only because the front will only be a 3 - 3 1/2" depending on brake selection and how we build the wheels.

FYI, that will be something to consider with the ZO6 brakes is they will move the center outward and eat up lip on the wheels.

Here is my son Michael's 67 with 295 / 30 / 19 11" front and 345 / 25 / 20 13" rear wheels, but no flares. This is a 2 1/2" lip up front and a 6" lip on the back

Man, this car is beautiful. Even cooler that your son built it,...with a little help from dad. After I finish my project I hope to do the same with my son. He's only 4 so I have a little time....at the pace I'm going I'll need it!

BTW - Frank, when do you sleep?!?!

About 5 hours a night, LOL! So fricken busy I have little choice. I treasure the early mornings, it is the only time I can work orders and paperwork without the phone ringing! But now some people know I am up early so.........Could be worse, phone could be NOT ringing!

Yeah, Michael's car is 5 years old next month and still looks damn cool. We don't get it out much to shows but when he does, he still kills them dead! We are dying to bring it in and fix some of the stuff done by a 15 Y/O building his first car. The interior will be the first order of buisness. Time is not on our side though!

awesome looking car frank. that one has caught my eye a few times already.
the look i am heading for is in the weeds low and wide. i am thinking 8" lip on rear without possibly needing to do mini tubs (towards the inside atleast) and keeping the same stock rearend width. i am actually wanting a positive offset look to the fronts. this is what worried me as i would have to use big spacers to get the wheel offset i want for looks reasons, then my scrub radius would be assinine!! i may still do custom made longer arms to correct it,to keep my positive offset look and keeping the scrub radius down. kind of like the later model trans am series cars. i have alot of body mod plans in my head. just going for something outside the box abit.

here is a pic from a 1991 popular hot rodding of a 67 with nice blended flares. i am imagining little eyebrow flares off of that. yes, the car is prostreet, i am only looking at the body.
then a couple race cars with the offsets i like, and correct for scrub radius on big wheels in the front.
next a couple of a 67 with some eyebrow flares. the car looks so much wider and aggressive. abeit though, his scrub radius would be way off with those offsets on front.
basically, imagine all of them blended together with other updates like flushed windows, dechromed, lots of black, shaved handles, custom lighting and other subtle things. not gonna be an overnight project, but should be pretty wicked and different.
