Yeah, I've been in primer for quite a while. I have some econo Summit covers, which are quite beat up, plus they have that underside rubber/material that can end up sticking to your paint.
Now that I am getting paint... I better get some good fender covers
So what do you guys have/use?

go to Wal Mart and buy the softest blanket they have. cut it into smaller sections that fit over the fender, and put the fender covers over that.

Griot's Garage has some very cool ones. They're red and made out of the soft polishing towels. They have magnets so they stay put and have pockets in the front for whatever.
I have three ... one for each fender and the third for the front. Best fender covers I've ever seen or used.

We use these from Driftmode and really like 'em. Black felt carside, tough nylon outside, some have pockets, different sizes & colors.

I haven’t used a fender cover in years. I use big soft cotton towels held in place with a Craftsman MagMat (or two). These flexible little MagMats are awesome. They hold the towel in place and the MagMat can also hold wrenches or screws. When I’m done, I peel off the MagMat and I stick the MagMat to the side of my tool box and throw the towel in the wash. I never have to worry about anything dirty touching or scratching my paint. I actually keep one MagMat stuck to the inside of my trunk lid. That way if I have problems on the road, I throw a towel on the fender and toss the MagMat in place to hold the towel. Usually if you use a towe as a fender coverl and start the car, the fan blows it off. The MagMat holds it in place.
There are fender covers on the market with magnets embedded in them, but they can end up holding metal, and then you lay the metal on your paint, yikes!
The only thing that touches my paint is a clean soft towel!

Thanks guys, a lot of great suggestions.
Since I am also in a small garage, I want to set aside, either a container, or make a sealed vinyl type bag, to keep dust etc off of these.
I find that I create a lot of dust, either doing woodwork, or grinding metal, especially in the winter/rainy season when the garage doors are often closed
