I think I heard somewhere that Camaro meant "friend" or something. Wouldn't that be the same thing?

Back when there was talk about Hot Rod Mag doing that dynacorn all restoration part camaro, there was this big rumor going around that camaro meant "panther" and that they should name the project car panther to get around copyright infringement.

Camaro is a word that was made up by someone at GM that was loosely based on some French word that meant "friend".

i think they just wanted a word that started with the letter "C" and sounded somewhat sporty. every other car model in the Chevy lineup back then had at least a trim level that started with a "C"- Corvette, Corvair, Chevy 2, Caprice...
