A 58 Edsel.

He wants to tun it into a mild custom. I just don't know. It seems like a lot of work and moneys to put into such a hated car.

I mean, people collect those John Wayne Gacy clown paintings, too.

I guess we'll see. Perhaps I will eat crow.

What do you think?

There's a few mild Edsels here in Dayton.

i'd drive it.
but first i'd gut it and get rid of any dead weight, and maybe throw a modern chassis under the car- should be able to find a newer Crown Vicky cop car for that..

I think you're right about your friend. Be extremely cautious if a fixed up edsel starts killing people at night.....

Cool!

I think it could be made into something, I say bag it fix the floors and drive it. Not everybody's cup of tea but would turn some heads. Then again I drive a pea green 71 Chevy Kingswood stationwagon.

Hell, who needs the back seat when you can use the front. Also plenty of room in the trunk to take home a mini cooper.

I am a believer that most any 30's-60's American iron has the potential to be cool with the right wheels and stance. When I walk around car shows with my wife, she gets overwhelmed with the fact that I like something about just about every car there. I guess I can appreciate the effort behind it even if it isn't the car that I would have bought or a build style that I don't particularly like or a paint scheme that I don't like, etc.

I LOVE IT! Build it with a Thunderbird 8.8 IRS, maybe a late Cobra Mustang front end and 4 valve Cobra engine, 5 or 6 speed.
Air ride would make it easy to keep it low and handle good.

Hmm nice one Larry,

I think that's the problem I'm having, he bought a 4 door. The only way any 4 door is cool, is when you suicide those back doors. Or do some extensive metal work and make it a 2 door haha.

I don't have a problem with suiciding (That's not a word) the back doors, there's a niche there...maybe not for the true PT guys, but we are in the Outhouse LOL

I'm on the fence.:dunno:

I agree...why not? People used to say the same about 50's Buicks and Oldsmobiles etc....

Doug

No. I already have a project I can't afford.

Part of me thinks it might be neat, and I know that my buddy has the skills to pull it off. He even has good taste usually. I just can't get over the awkward lumpyness of it. He is a diesel mechanic and is measuring to seee if a Cummins will fit under the stock hood.

I think it's cool, I would love to have one myself. Oh, and there's nothing wrong or uncool about 4 doors, people need to get over themselves.

I think all the modern euro sports sedans has changed peoples' perceptions of 4 doors. besides, you don't have friends??? or you just like pushing the seat forward so they can get in?
I would do a VERY simple mild custom; bag it, nice wheels, TBI on the original engine and a modern AOD trans. thats it. and rebuild the brakes.

I think it would be awesome, even being a 4 door, the hardtop is what makes it do-able........but this is coming from a guy that drives a rusty 58 Wagon! LOL!
Sand it down, flat paint about the same color, white flake scallops (hot rod style) in various places with black flake outlines. White flake roof. Polish all the chorome. White flake vinyl tuck and roll interior with either black piping and accents. Bagged on the ground with a dependable suspension/brakes and drivetrain. Wide whites with steel wheels (not sure on the color yet) and chrome spiders and spider rings or a set of Caddy sombrero caps...............I like!! LOL!

I think it could be very cool!

I don't know if it would work on this build because the 4dr Edsel is a bit longer and flatter than the car I saw, but I did see a '54 Chevy 4dr with the rear doors shaved a couple months ago. It was a great look on that car. There is nothing wrong with 4 doors on a custom build. Sometimes you have to dare to be different.

And I think you could build an Edsel into a real sinister looking custom.

I do.

But I don't like Edsels.

Mathius

I'd buy one, but not in a 4-door. Contrary to what some people like, I think 4-door's make the car too long and the shortening of the doors is unattractive.

I wouldn't do it, but I am four door phobic.
That said, with a shave here and there, down on the ground with the right wheels and tires it could be a pretty cool family cruiser.
If he thinks its cool, what the rest of us think doesn't really matter.

Is your friend's last name Cunningham? Is he kind of nerdy looking and wear broken glasses? If so it's too late.....you’re in trouble.

In all honesty, it could be cool, but you have to look really hard and think about doing some amazing stuff to make it work,....my opinion.

I agree that just about any american car from the 50s 60s and even 70s has potential! And the time for four doors has come!

Maybe it was hated then but now, no way. Its defiantly an attention grabber. Its not like its going to be restored into a junker or whatever the problem was with it then.
