Hi everyone, I am trying to get my hands on an IRS unit out of a 93 vette Dana 36 rear.

I have a few questions that should be easily answered by people on these boards.

1. How much horse can the Dana 36 rear hold.
- I will probably want to change the gear ratio, and I saw on other posts that I can pay for a Super Dana 44 bout 1400 and get custom rear end ratio that will hold well over 500HP but If I can get away with the Dana 36 rear why not. I plan on making no more than 500 - 550 rwhp.

2. I know wayne due has a fabricated setup for the IRS rear, has anyone used this setup here. will i be able to do the 3" mini tub and fit my 18 x 335 under there and have clearance for all the linkage shocks etc.

Any knowledge transfer here would be greatly appreciated. I haven't bought the unit yet and would like to know If I am getting my self in too deep.

Regards

The kit is a weld in kit, so you will need to have some welding skills. The Dana 36 is a good rear and can handle about 400 Hp. The 88 to 96 rear is about 63'' hub to hub so some wheel offset will be in order to get it to work. The 84 to 87 is 61'' and is a little better fit in the 67 and 68's. I will help you as much as possible with the install.

Good luck with your project!

1.Well I think I need to look for a dana 44 rear end. hope it bolts in place of the dana 36. Anyone with info on that would be a great help.

2. The rear end being 63" offseting the rim ok I'm fine with that I didn't really want a deep dish look on my 18" rear. My only 2 questions are will the wheel still stick out of the fender. And can I still fit my 335' 18' 35 under without hitting any suspension parts?

Too many questions...

well im sure a 36 will not handle 500hp. You may want to try to get a 44. I can get a Viper 44 new for $1200 and just have Wayne make the mounting brackets for it. avail in 3.36 3.73 or 4.11

335's will be a problem if you go with a Vette suspension due to the dog bones but there are alternatives.

I know that Reckn8 on this board has a green 69 Camaro with 335's and a Dana 36 IRS and 500 HP. The car sits great and has zero problem with tire rub. The 36 hasn't broken yet but who knows. The entire rear was gone through and rebuilt so it should be okay for a while at least.

Hey Dave, well slightly higher than pictured...its extra for the cover/support. But the 3rd member carries part number P5007402- for the 3.73 unit and list for under $1200. try around online for better prices. I bought this one from my work with my discount.
Hey Phil, welcome to the site....is that a modifyed set up? I measure out a 69 and the stock IRS was too close to the tire but I could have mocked it wrong, i've been known to do that... :rolleyes5

Viper rears are all over E bay for $750 or less, but it will not work with the Corvette brakets. You will need to fabricate a lot of stuff to make a Viper work, but they are pretty damn strong.

I also have a link saved for a 4.10 gar set that did not sell if you buy one

I bought it on ebay for $550 hub to hub. I thought it was a good price, I am waiting for it to get shipped to me, also there is a member on the site that said he has the wayne due kit for $500. So I figure for $1200 I get a IRS in my 68 plus a lot of elbow grease. Not bad, just need to confirm the rear tire clearance. I don't have the rear yet so I haven't been able to measure it. I'll try to get the measurements with pics for you guys.
As far as the rear end Dana36 goes, do you guys know if it is a straight swap for Dana36 to the Dana44?

yes, as long as you are not using the torque arm. you need the batwing and center section complete with yokes.

Unfortunately 89-96 complete Corvette Dana 44 rearends bring about $2000-$2200 right now. They are hard to find since fabricators like Trey at "Street Shop Inc" and others are manufacturing new frames for 53-82 vettes that use the later C4 suspension.

The early 84-87 Dana 44 Corvette gear chunk will bolt in the later style rearend cover so Corvette guys are also buying early C4 rears for the chunk. The Corvette guys like the later C4 rearend due to the better brake calipers with integral parking brake and a few geometry issues. The width is not an issue to Trey at the Street Shop as he narrows the unit to fit the frame. It's really a nice product. Check it out at "www.streetshopinc.com.

If you find any Dana 44 Corvette rearend right now that cheap, buy it. If you do not use it you can make some money!!!

I read that when you shorten the shafts on the rear of the vette suspension it messes up the geometry soo much your better off just staying with live axle, isn't that true?

Thanks Frank for the reply,
It looks like I will install the Dana 36 and if it breaks then I will swap in a 44.
I wasn't planning on using the torque arm, as I never saw it in wayne dues pictures, does anybody know if they use some kind of substitute, linkage of sorts or is the torque arm just not needed?

We shortened ours 3in. over all and have seen no adverse effects. It rides great and handles great.

The tourqe arm is replaced by a solid cross mounting bar that the IRS unit now bolts to.

Is this something that you fabricated yourself? I tried to find pics of your car but can't find too many. Can you send me some please I would love to see them.

So far your car sounds like what I am trying to do, I am not a mechanic or engineer but want a kick butt car like yours and don't want to break the bank doing it, that means less mistakes and more advice from guys like you Thanks!

We have something coming in a few months that will allow you to make the rear as short as you want and have no bump steer or camber issues. Coming soon. BTW, we have narrowed them up to 7" total.
