I am looking at getting a radar detector for the wifes mustang so I did a search and there is nothing but older posts on the subject. Has anyone bought a radar detector recently that can make some suggestions.

thanks,

Valentine One is the best out there in every test I've seen done independently.

maybe people could do the speed limit if others would Hang UP and Drive or just learn to DRIVE period.I like my escort but looking for newer model.

LOL. We don't speed in town or excessivly for that matter but when we get on the highway for a long trip it is nice to drive an extra 15 mph or so. It doesn't sound like much but if you are driving on a 15-40 hour trip that adds up over the days. On most interstates like I10 or I75 in Florida people are still blowing by you at 85 mph but you just never know where those little piggies are hiding......:fingersx:

Playing devil's advocate here, by the same token if others were more patient of other drivers then you wouldn't need to speed...

Believe me, I get behind a lot of people that will drive you insane however I've found over the years that typically, especially in rush hour traffic, you won't get to your destination any quicker than the person doing the speed limit will. I can't tell you how many times I've passed people doing the speed limit on my way to work only to have them catch me at a stop light a few more miles down the road. :(

But to stay on subject. I used to have a Cobra radar detector years ago that seemed to work okay. However I threw it out the day I had it in my windshield and got pulled over by the State Highway patrol. It never once went off to warn me. I looked at the ticket and it showed the officer used a laser radar to clock me. My detector was setup for laser but it doesn't matter much anyway.

I was always told with the laser guns that a radar detector was of no use other than to tell you you've just been caught.

I've had my Valentine One for years and still love it. A buddy has the new Escort/Passport with the GPS and all that good stuff, but not sure if it's any more useful. Nobody has really come out with anything groundbreaking IMHO.

The real deal, will be when someone comes up with an LCD screen that pinpoints the location of the signal using google earth, etc. and will alert if the signal is moving or stationary, etc. Up until then, it's all just a bunch of beeps. LOL.

Check out k40. We install them at work and they can be mostly hidden with the lights above the instrument panel and a little speaker hidden in there too. They also mess up the radar signal coming from the gun. Not the cheapest though

Trust me they don't work, unless the radar is on all the time. With the laser, the reason the laser detectors don't pick them up is because the detector has to be hit with the beam. Besides with the Laser your pretty much had out to 2800 ft. Just slow down and always wear your MORRIS Seatbelts. :)

Just thought I would give an update. I bought a Valentine One and it has been all over LA, TX, TN AL, FL and it works great. The whole "they don't work" thing is BS and it is what a cop would say. One time and I do mean one time have I passed a radar trap where the cop was actually turning the radar on and off. Every other time they pull over and leave it on so you pick them up miles ahead. Realistically there is 10 of thousands of cars that drive down the major highways everyday, no cop is going to sit there and turn it on and off every second all day. It is just not practical. Now as far a laser... not sure there. The end result is that you remove probably 95+% of the regular radar and yes there is still a small chance you could get lasered or radared at the last second. Still pretty good odds I think.

work for ksp they do work fine. laser it works too but you usually cant slow down before the laser is locked on however lasers arent in every car and are rarely used.

Well it's not like we are talking doing a buck 50 or something. I am talking 8 or 10 mph over. Heck they just raised some of our speed limits in La and Tx to 75 anyways.

I bought a $90 cheapie and it works as good as my frineds $400 one with every option out there. In Baton Rouge they have these new guns, what looks like cameras, that they have to be standing outside the car to use, They point it and look through it. Neither of our radars pick up those. If they are going to cameras that measure how fast the image grows to determine speed, then the detector game will be over. At least they have to work for it and get out of the car in the heat to check your speed to be able to give you a ticket for going 5 over the speed limit.

i have the $499 escort 9500ci and it saves my but every week.
i also installed the hidden the $1600 escort 9500ix in my brothers car before drove cross-country to VA. he went with the hidden unit because the radar detectors are illegal in va. he told me one night while driving in Arizona strait away he picked up a cop 7 miles away

when you're buying a radar detector, you are not only paying for range you're also paying for filtering of false alarms

I wanted to make a couple points.
1. The proper use of a radar detector is not to warn you when YOU are being targeted, but rather to pick up radar ahead of you. In other words, if a cop is shooting radar at cars a mile ahead of you, your detector should pick it up and give you warning to play it cool until you are past him.
2. Each state (sometimes county) police use different types of radar bands and guns. Most states have gone away from K band and are using Ka only. X band is not used at all. Laser is of course the latest, and at least in GA 99% of the cops are using it. There is a website that lists by state the preferred weapon of the police in that area.
3. Just like radar, a laser detector is only for advanced warning (i.e. someone in front of you just got tagged). Once you are hit with that beam, you're done. There are laser jammers out there that do a great job of saving you once you're hit. They will temporarily jam the gun so all the cop sees is a blank or a 0 on his display. While it is doing this, you slow the heck down. That way if he tries to shoot again, you're now going the speed limit. These have been proven to be extremely effective. So, the ultimate then is to have a radar detector and a laser jammer. Costly, but preventing one or two tickets pays for itself.

I personally like the V1 and it has saved me from 4 laser attacks and countless radar attacks in the 3 years I've been running it. All were warnings that a cop was shooting people up the road from me and I could slow down in plenty of time. One thing that most folks complain about with the V1 is the high number of false alarms, but all you have to do is turn off the bands you don't want. I have mine set to only monitor Ka and Laser since that's all they use around here.

Those are some good tip for the V1 that I will definitely look into. We went to New Orleans this weekend and there was 6 radar traps on I10. the v1 worked every time.
