View Full Version : Look what showed up in my garage (hint: my next project)

Hello folks...

Those of you who have been around here a long time might remember me, I built a little 70 Camaro RS about 10 years ago that I called Project Hunk'o'Metal (given that's about what I started with). As many of these projects go, I had to sell it when it was done due to the bad economy of the time, and I have missed it since the day I handed the keys over. Well, after a couple of false starts and a lot of looking, I've found what should become my next project!

I really wanted another second gen Camaro. I've bought, then resold, two of them in the last couple of years that just weren't what they were promised to be (you'd think that I would learn after 3 iffy internet purchases, but apparently not. ;) ). During my search, I kept running across 2nd gen Firebirds / TransAms, and the more I looked at them, the more I liked them. I have to admit that our own John's (Not A TA) car really helped push me over the top. I looked at a couple that were for sale close to me, but both were borderline junk, and the prices were way too high. As I've discovered in this search, 2nd gen 'bird prices are a bit higher than their Camaro brothers.

I decided to expand my search, and sure enough, I found this car for sale on Craigslist in South Florida. Things came together very quickly after several phone calls. The guy wasn't looking to sell outside of his area, but he worked hard with me to make this come together, as he was leaving for 3 weeks just after I contacted him. Long story shorter, the transport company (Reliable Auto Transport) picked the car up Thursday morning and dropped it off at my house Friday afternoon (a 20 hour drive!).

As with all purchases of a sight-unseen car, there were a few little surprises in store for me. But overall, I got a good deal given what the car has that I already want. I basically wanted something I could drive while I pull together the parts for it, and I wanted a solid body, as panels for the 'birds are a bit harder to find. I was told about some rust in the lower quarter panel and deck lid, but unfortunately there is a bit more in other places that were the 'surprises'. Honestly, it's nothing too horrible, the quarter will need a patch, the other places will probably need some small patches. But the trusty magnet didn't find a lot of filler in the rest of the car, so that's a plus.

This car was restored 6 years ago, and the person who did it replaced a lot of part that will save me some trouble. Most of the interior is in good shape (headliner, carpet, dash, seats). I will remove the console and I plan to replace the dash and seats, but otherwise, it's not too bad.

The engine is a pretty weak 350 SBC with some unidentified 4-speed behind it. My best guess is that the rear differential is something around a 2.70, and it's definitely an open diff (as evidenced by the 1-wheel burnout I did this morning. ;) ). The car is running REALLY rich, I need to tinker with the carb to tame it down a bit. I replaced the plugs, gave it an oil change, and replaced the valve cover gaskets (old cork style) that were hard as rocks and leaking oil everywhere today. Then took her for a drive. Nice to be able to drive an old car again! She actually rides fairly well for a 40 year old car, but I am just about convinced that the front shocks are the ones that GM installed in 1971. :-0

Anyway, as you can probably tell, I'm excited to have a project on my hands again. I'm still debating a lot of the details of what I'm going to do to the car... I'm almost certain that I'll do a front subframe from DSE or AME, the rear I'm a bit more torn about. The car will get some kind of LS engine combination with a T56 behind it. I want to convert the hood over to a T/A setup, and I hope to make a functional shaker on top of the LS. It's been done with an LS1 style intake, I'm debating a 4-barrel style intake to make it easier, but I sure hate to give up that beautiful torque curve that the LS-style intake can give you...

So here are a few pics... The whole set that I have so far can be seen at http://www.carbuff.net/71_firebird

This came from the seller before I bought the car:

Here she is ready to roll off of the transport:

And a couple of the damage that I will get to contend with:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/08/img_1007-1.jpg

And a few of the more entertaining pieces of handywork that I found on the car. First up, the throttle linkage:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/08/img_1026-1.jpg

And then there's the parking brake cable attachment. Apparently the person who put it back together couldn't screw the screw on far enough:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/08/img_0971-1.jpg

And the bellhousing. Easy access to the clutch plate bolts I suppose?

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/08/img_0972-1.jpg

And finally, the one that irks me, someone apparently needed access to something behind the AC box, so they cut an access hold in the top of the fender. Grrr!!!

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/08/img_1016-1.jpg

Ok, enough of that. As I get some of my decisions settled and make some progress, I'll start a build thread. I just had to share some excitement about this new project! I look forward to joining the ranks of the 2nd gen Pro-Touring 'bird owners! :)

I think that was a Toyota design.

Some interesting engineering ideas there.....
Nice looking bird...is it a T/A, a Formula, an Esprit or a Firebird?
My 71 Esprit will end up loking like a Formula when its finished.

Thanx guys. If you feel the desire or need to 'work' on it, fly on down to Austin! I'll put you up for a day or two. :)

My biggest decisions (as they likely are for everyone) are exactly which engine package to start with and which way to go with the suspension. I want to do with this car what I had intended, and never managed to, with Hunk'o'Metal... Track days. HoM was built a little too nicely for me to justify the risk of putting her on the track. I have (hopefully!) learned from that experience and will build this car a bit differently, with more of a focus on enjoying the driving experience.

That said, eventually I will dig into those body issues that need to be resolved and add the T/A body panels to finish out the look I want...

The one item that I had really wanted to run on my next project unfortunately isn't available any longer... I had planned on running one of LD's 3-links. Not many ended up in 2nd Gen cars, and I really wanted to use one. (if anyone just happens to know of one sitting around collecting dust anywhere......... ;) ).

I have a lot to learn about the subtle differences in the Camaros and the Firebirds, and a lot of catching up to do on the LS-engines. But that's part of the fun, and I can't wait to dig in.

Congratulations Bryan that is a cool car......I'd be happy to offer any opinions or personal experience to you on the early second gen birds as I've certainly had my share of them LOL...

Anvil offers many of the panels in Carbon to sort out your needs in that regard too... I can offer some impute on suspension and what has worked for me with the caveat that I've run non-LS combo's in my cars...

Congrats man! that should be fun to tweak. I am surprised the bellhousing didn't have duct tape on it...LOL

Bryan: Great starting point! How did I miss that for sale in my own back yard down here? Glad my car provided some inspiration and incentive.

PM me if there's anything I can help ya out with. Between Albert, Ty, Leigh, Wes, and several other active members with drivers here we can help keep ya from making mistakes we've made. LOL... Here's my first one. Do not eliminate the dome light. ahahaha I can't see a damn thing in my car at night and have to keep a flashlight in the console glove box! Clean looking headliner buuutt......

Ignore the little paint bubbles and stuff for now and drive it! That'll give you motivation to fix some things before diving in too deep.. Maybe get a retangular plastic plug for the fender hole that bothers you, and install it to cover the raw edge.

I'd say get the engine thjats in it running well and try a track day with that. You don't need 700 RWHP to go out on track and have fun. AND you learn more about staying on "the line" carrying momentum when you don't have the big power. Then when you move up to the big power drivetrain you can really haul.

You won't get much for the engine and trans that are in it now anyway so why not take it out and thrash it with what it has? I started going to tracks with a Pontiac 350 2V with a peg leg 2.72 rear and the stock single piston disc/drum brakes with some heavy duty pads in the 14 Car and had lots of fun. The car did pretty well on the road courses but only ran 16.4 on the strip due to wheelspin. I got black flagged once at the old Moroso road course because they thought I blew my engine. Turned out the cloud of smoke was from the right rear wheel spinning when coming out of a turn onto the back straight! LOL I keep upgrading a little at a time to keep the car driveable and expenses under control. The track guys love to see the old cars out there and will be helpfull and supportive, hope you like getting your picture taken!

Enjoy the car, I'm off to check out the pics on carbuff!

Nice to see another 2nd gen bird on here. Any questions on parts sourcing or even technical help and I'll be glad to help. I'm pro-touring a TA myself. The build thread is in the Projects section.

Any questions on 2nd Gen birds and I will be glad to help as well. I have done a BUNCH of them. (At least 10) Had my first one in 1979 and even then I had to take two wrecked birds to make one good one. So I have probably removed every factory bolt a couple of times on these things.

I have 4 2nd gen Trans Am builds going at the same time right now. If the guys listed above nor I can't answer your 2nd gen questions, then no one can. LOL

Thanx Tyler. I've seen your pieces! Fortunately, I think that my stock pieces are pretty good for now. I'm going to try and hold off on bodywork for a little while, but don't worry, I'll be looking again down the road. :twothumbs

I've always loved the models with the flat nose / grille and the hood scoops up close to the front of the hood ..
LEAVE THE HOOD !!Hee hee... Actually, this hood is in really good shape. I have this crazy desire to make a functional Shaker scoop setup with a T/A hood on top of an LS engine though. And the scoops on this hood haven't been cut, so it might be worth something to someone else due to that.

Great starting point! How did I miss that for sale in my own back yard down here? I thought that was close to your neck of the woods. And frrom what I see these cars going for, it felt like a pretty good deal, even with the shipping costs. Couldn't find anything close to it around here!

I'm sure I will be hitting you guys up with lots of 'bird related questions as I go forward. I'm surprised how different this car is in many areas from the 2nd Gen Camaros which I know much more about, having worked on a few of those (at least 6 or 7).

I maybe able to help you on that rear suspesion if you need it.Thanx Vince, email sent...

As John suggested, I plan to drive this car as I collect up parts and pieces for it. Whether I trust it enough to do a track day yet, well, we'll see. It's reasonably tight for a 40 year old car, but I would have to do some work that would, in some ways, be throwaway to get it track ready. We'll see, for now I'm enjoying driving it on short trips as I get more comfortable with it. It hasn't seen a lot of road time in the last 5 years... ;)

Mmmmmmmmm this takes me back-- my car had a wimpy 350 and unknown 4 speed too! I got lucky on a 3.08 posi though. I'm the wes that was mentioned above (I think?), I feel like I may be turning into the de facto ls-into-bird guy (first thing you should know about putting an ls into a bird-- every other Pontiac guy ever will tell you at least one time "I'd never put a chevy motor in my car like that"--It's like some sort of reflex thing--which makes mine a rare bird indeed) and I seriously enjoy helping others out as much as I do working on my own!

This may fall under "tracking" but have you thought about autocross? Low speeds and plenty of space all to yourself means it's a safer place to start learning the car without having to worry about breaking it as much.
