View Full Version : 20x10 with a 295/35 on a 69 camaro?
I just bought a set of rushforth wheels for my 69. I have the 20x10's in the garage and the 19x8 fronts are being made right now. yeah, the wait seems long.
now it's time to buy some rubbers for the car. the 20x10's have a 5.75" rs. the current tires on the car are bfg 275/60/15's that measure an actual 11.1" section width and 28" tall. I would really like to keep the 28" diameter in the rear and use a tire that won't look even a tiny bit stretched. I know a 275/40/20 will fit. but not sure if it will look stretched on the 10" rim. so, I'm looking at the 295/35 nitto invo. it's the next affordable step up in section width while maintaining the 28" diameter that I want to stay with. published spec is 11.67 on a 10.5" wheel. a 10" wheel should pull it down another .2". not to mention that every set of nittos that I have ever owned seemed to run smaller than advertised in the section width dept. oh, and the car is lowered 3" and the fender lips are already trimmed back.
anyone care to offer an opinion on how much work would be required to make this fit? could I get lucky and this combo actually fit with little work?

No way. To tall and wide at the same time. 28 is big on these cars and will fit but keep in mind the taller you go in the wheelhouse, the more narrow the tub gets at the top. I do not think the 295s would work even if they were 25.5, but I am certain they won't fir at 28"
here is a 28" tall Drag radial I mocked up on Project Unfair. It fits, but it is tall. I like the look, if you could find a 275 that is 28" you would have a winner.

28" tall 345 / 35 / 18
thanks, Frank. Jon at driverz inc told me that I should stick with a 275 also. you sponsors really know your stuff.
looks like a 275/40/20 and 225/40/19 (28.5"/26.2") combo will be my first choice then.
I'm trying to stay with as tall of a tire as possible to get the most ground clearance and tire tuck. and also to avoid the rubber band sidewall look.

I dont think 5.75 bs is enough
I dont think 5.75 bs is enough
seems to be the tried and true backspace for a 69. at least with a 275 tire.

Yeah with like 8 inch wide wheels. I have 20x10 on mine with 6.816 bs and there isnt much room to tuck, 68 camaro but i dont think there is much physical difference in the wheel well lip placement.
Also 275 is a major stretch, I have 295 and they are stretched so much I would love to take them off and put on 315s. But $$
I'll show you some pics, keep in mind that I have a 4 link so I the rear axle can be moved to the pass side to balance out the spaces.

Your wheels will stick out about an inch more than mine.
(mr. spock voice) interesting.
my car is wearing a 15x8.5 with a 4-7/8 back right now. pulling the wheel/tire off, laying on it on the floor and dropping a tape through the center with a straight edge on top of the tire gives me a true 11.1" section width. my rear has been pulled and re-centered with new saddles. the wheel/tire combo fits absolutely perfect in the wheelwells.
now, just crunching numbers....keeping the same section width tire and stepping up to a 10" wide wheel nets you +3/4" on each side of the wheel. that comes out to be 5-5/8" back. looks like I have 1/8" more back than needed.
not to mention that a 6.8" back would put me well into the inner wheelwell before the wheel face touched the axle flange. I would need minitubs to fit that much back.
I appreciate your input, I really do. but, your measurements go against what I have under the car now.....I could be wrong. but we will see shortly. :)

Maybe the lip of the car is totally diferent between the years. You say you have the 20x10 wheels there it might be worth bolting them on and hanging plumb bobs.

I am going with the same 20x10 and 19x8s with the same bs on a 65 Chevelle. I am also looking for the similar tire size. I have 13 1/2"s from the inside quarter to the frame rail for space. Also, mini-tubbed it so there is plenty of room for the taller tire.
Good luck and keep us posted with info and pics!

275 on a 20x10 wouldn't fit very well, IMO. Here's what a 315/35/20 looks like on a 20x10

that's why I would love to go with at least a 295/35. it's hard to believe that a quarter inch on each side will make such a huge difference in fitment. but, the sponsors here have been there and done that. I will head the advice of the seasoned pros.
right now, I'm considering knocking a little out of each side of the rear and having sheetmetal tubs put in the car and the frame notched when my guy does the rollbar. the car will eventually get an air ride four link.

I have rushforth 20x10's on the rear of my car with the 5.75 backspacing. I'm running 275's. definitely could have used another .25" of backspacing so I wouldn't of had to roll the fender lip some. The setup like it is, I have at least .5" clearance between the tire/wheel and the inner fender well. But, after rolling the lip a little, they fit great. I also think that with another .25" of backspacing I could easily have fit 295's. There are a bunch of pics in the photobucket account in my sig of the setup.
Also, I was told that there is more room in the 69 rear wells than the 67/68's. Kind of makes sense since the rear fender sticks out a little more from the body line.

looks great. what size are your tires? do you think that the 275's look stretched on 10" wheels?

Mine are 275/40-20's. They aren't stretched at all. In fact they are probably the perfect size for not being stretched or bulged.

Here is a 285-30-20 on 20 x 10 to give you an idea..

looks great. I was thinking of using the 275/40 since the sponsors say the 295 will not fit. the 275/40 will maintain the 28" min diameter I am looking for. the 285/30 is just too short for me. what size are your fronts? 225/40/19?

thanks for the pic, Mark. the 285 is just a little too short for me.
the 295/35's are on!!! is it a tight fit? you bet it is. I'm going to have to employ the bfh for a little extra inner wheelwell clearance, but they are under the car. I haven't gotten the new small diameter lugs yet, so they are bolted up for test fit with some old ones I had laying around. I am afraid of marring the holes up with a big socket so they are just on hand tight. even though they are touching the ground, all of the weight isn't on the tires yet. but the rear is on jackstands and the suspension is fully loaded. a few tweaks and we'll be in bidness.

You can use Mgard Spline Drive lug nuts. They come with their own small diameter socket so it won;t scratch the powder coat in the lug holes. Pep Boys, Autozone have them for $25 a set.

well, darn. I wish I would have known that. I ordered a set last thursday and they should be here today or tomorrow. when I looked on the mcgard site, they did not list a spline drive for 7/16" studs. they had them listed for every size BUT 7/16".

Ya know, they might not be available for 7/16.

This thread is 11 years old. You might do better to just start a new thread asking your question. Good luck
