View Full Version : Best AC system for a hacked 68 Firebird?

I'm ready to install a new AC system - I've got all the old parts removed (the whole dash is empty, and I've pulled the passenger fender to remove the old blower box)

I've done the reading on the Classic Auto Air system and Vintage Air system, but not sure which is best given my application.

The car was originally an AC car - I have the dash control, vents, etc. But in a prior restoration it was converted to a Non-AC car. The blower was disconnected, a non-AC vent / heater core box was installed, etc. The firewall also looks like it was cut up a bit to make this work.

I see sentiment that the Vintage Air Gen IV system is the way to go, but then I see it is for "non-air" Firebirds only. I'll call them this week to see why they mention that, and what impact it has...but thought someone here may have some sage advice on the topic.

In the final configuration, I'd like to use existing dash vents, and factory style controls. I'd like to get a polished compressor, install a March serpentine system (running a Pontiac 455) and have the condenser fit along with the big griffin radiator. I may have to do some firewall patching. I'm ok with any glovebox mods, etc.

Any advice is welcomed. Thanks!

The Firebird system is listed as none A/C only because it only works with the none A/C controller. The heater control is availabe new for $189, used ones can be found for pennies sometimes.

Give us a call, we are top 10 in Vintage Air sales this year selling 90% Camaro / Firebird / Chevelle systems.
