View Full Version : What Drives You?

I'm looking for, when you're day dreaming about driving your car, where do you most often picture yourself ripping it up?
Are you chasing down a GT3 through the esses at Infineon, trying to break 180mph at Maxton, showing Mary Pozzi how 0.2 faster is done on the Peanut, or doing your best Big Red impression across the silver state?

Ummm all of them:headbang:
Haven't had a chance to autocross or road course it yet but i did buy it with those options in mind :smoke:
I have had it out to the drag strip a few times and just came back from a road trip in the Mountains. Found some good twisty roads to have lots of fun with !
Bought the Mustang basically because I can dabble in AutoX, Road Course Track Days, Drag strip and still Daily Drive it ! Gonna be at least a year or so before I get a house with a garage so I can build something more fun !
I dream of it all but ultimately spirited driving with friends to the surrounding area car shows and late night cruises is usually what I'm thinking about most of the time ! Also ever car I wanna build has cross country road trips in mind ! Here's what happens when you road trip in the Rockies ... there's all these big open parking lots/rest stops with no car in them !!!:wasntme:

Steven, I have a suggestion. You may want to change the setting on your poll so people can vote for more than one. I personally have several on that list that applies to me and my cars.

Then I think most people would vote for 9 of em, including myself. I tried to make it a "I can't do without this" poll.

After having progressed from street racing to drag racing, auto cross on short course and then Dwarf cars on dirt and asphault, I dream of going wheel to wheel on a road course... But reality will probly only do auto-x and a couple track days with friends.....
If Vegas area had hill climb I'd like to try that too....

I autocrossed my last car once and was hooked from there on out. I would love too (when my bird is done) to get into some more autox, road racing, and even some road trips to other events in other states.

I like big high speed tracks that really let a car open up a breath, but my favorite is staged several hundred mile closed public street races like the Targa series.

I like the road course circuits. I'm 5 minutes from donington and as soon as it reopens the Trans Am will be booked on for a day.
The autox is ok, and fills a small hole, but it's nothing on a track day. Drag racing soon gets boring IMO. I think i'd want a seriously fast car to keep my interest in that.

I love all of it, but Track Days with long sessions really get me fired up. With lots of laps to learn the course and push the car to its limits, I really feel like I gain something from it. The seat time, the track time, and the chance to make adjustments and dial the car in are golden.
I love the drags and the autocrosses for the same reasons, but a lot of times you just don't get a slew of laps at those deals. Sometimes, sure...and its great when you do...but Track Days seem to offer the most on-track time in my experience. LOVE that...

You should have also included a choice of events like RTTC/RTTH, they have the option of multiple different things. I would have checked off darn near all of them but picked open track day.

Truth is that, like most folks, I like to (or would like to) do most, if not all of the events listed, plus a couple; gravel rally included.

What no choice for top/high speed events like the Silver State Classic or similar. There is no adrenalin quite like going just past the traction limit and recovering at triple the speed limit. Not recovering sucks though other than you have a story and you feel blessed to have made it out alive.
I must be blind I see it now guess that is what happens when you only get 1.5 hrs of sleep.

Will it ever happen god only knows but I will have fun building it.

I just switched from 1/4 mile car to an autocross car. I would like to do a road coarse but, do not have the top end. I can still go fast in a straight line but , now I can also go just as fast around corners, Way more fun.

For me, it's not so much the end goal as the process. I like working on things with my hands (I have a job in software, so most of what I do professionally is ephemeral). I like solving problems. I like making a plan to increase speed/handling/drivability/style/etc., executing it, and enjoying the results.
Learning and doing, whatever the goal may be, is a reward in and of itself.

Given the angle on the thing hanging from the rearview mirror and the lift on the inside front tire, it appears you're "highway speeds" are helmet worthy. :twothumbs

Falcon maybe (especially considering the history of the factory cars at the Monte Carlo and East African Safari), Corvair ? never!
Believe it or not if funds allowed I would build a 5.0 powered Ford Ranger set up similar to a CORR or the old Micky Thompson type Stadium trucks, only street legal(ish) and for two people for Rally.
After I went from Rally Racing to Off Road, we ran my Class 7 Ranger in a couple of rally's for fun and did quite well, and with a bunch more motor than my old 2.8 litre Esslinger 4 banger I think it would be quite competitive and a lot of fun!

Ha. I was reading the start of your post and thought of Esslinger. I went to church with them back in the 80's and 90's. Wicked engines. My youth opastor had them modify the 2.8T in his '85 SVO mustang and it was a 5.0 killer for sure!
And yes, the MT stadium trucks were awesome. Ivan Stewart was great!

We ran that series and my Ranger actually beat the Factory Toyota's (and everyone else) at Pomona the one time the series raced there. We flat out horse-powered them with a Special Esslinger Motor for that race and this was with out Desert Truck.
Danny Esslinger is a great guy and no one makes more horsepower out of a Pinto motor! Try 300 HP out of a naturally aspirated 3.0L

I put down drag racing because that is all I have done. I have been consistant enough to grab a couple of trophys at the Wednesday night Fun Drags. I will admit, however, a very strong desire to drive a road course or auto-X. I will also be helping my buddy run at Maxton in the next year.

I dream of track days with nice warm temps around 75 and sunshine. Finding the best apex, being able to make the tires scream for help corner after corner and no speed limit in the straights is what gets me smiling.
Autox ing just hasn't got the same feel or sound. Technically it is harder but harder is only better for a few things and cones are tough on the underside of your car.
I dream of Gingerman in June and the sound of 60 PT cars screaming around the track !!!!!

I've never been a fan of waiting to drive for 30 seconds, whether it be drag racing or autocross. Track days with 20 minute sessions 4 times a day are much more fun to me, and you get a LOT more seat time. Instruction is also readily available and food is generally served. I'd much rather approach a rumble strip at 90mph or 140mph.
Let your car stretch its legs, and play with cars you would NEVER have a chance to drive against on a track.

Running the Silver state classic has been on top of my list since the early 90's after I got the video. First time I got my Monte Carlo up 125 I was hooked. My 87 Mustang topped out at 135 with the 3.08 gears and 150 with the 3.55s. Sadly that car was wrecked and has been in the garage waiting to be rebuilt, but it will only ever be a race car because it was a total.

you need to walk the course more. LOL!!! The club I ran with in Florida allowed us to take bicycles on the course, it helped a lot on choosing lines and you could get around it more times. The more times around the less chance of going off. Scca doesn't allow this for some stupid reason, but they have a lot of stupid rules.

Myself, I am looking forward to some canyon carving and great summer cruising, through the scenery. I am not looking forward to the rock chips in the new paint, but it's offset by the sound of a big block rumbling through an uphill twisty. Stopping for a drink, and a swim, at a roadside creek. Grew up cruising, back road street racing (don't condone that one anymore ;) ) and drag racing my Nova. Last time I drag raced though was 2007 and lady luck was on my side when I took 1st place in street tire class for the season. Figured I better quit while I'm ahead and still have $ in the bank.
Last year I tried carving corners and I was hooked. No breaking parts, no more high revving motors, no more high speeds that scared my wife, more affordable, and a heck of a lot more fun than just banging gears in a straight line for 11 seconds. Right now my aim is to autocross a lot but I want to try some solo road course events too in the future when the car's done. I have 5 videos of the wagon on the road course and autocross track in my build thread listed below if'n yer interested...

I've grown to want it all.
So far in 2011, I've been to cruise nights, drag races (won my 12.50-second bracket), road courses, autocrosses, and also won the Car Craft RSE (where I made 580 RWHP with nitrous). This is in the same car I drove to RTTH6 last year (2,000+ mile round trip...won the Long Distance award there) and routinely see 20+ MPG on the freeway. All this was done on the same tires (Nitto 555s) and through Flowmaster muffs (and a carb/HEI old school SBC).
Tom Farrington mentioned something about Pro Touring cars being the "Swiss Army knives" of hot rods, and this has become my 'itch'...doing everything competitve I can with my wagon, and doing good at it. My car will never 'rule' at anything. It's simply too big. But it can be good at everything, and that's become my goal with it. It's working for me, and I'm enjoying this car more than I thought I could. Actually winning events (or even portions of events) is truly rewarding with an underdog ride like mine.
