A few Questions...

Will this box work on my 69 firebird? I have ordered the adapter kit from Lee MFG. What pitman arm do I need? The only one I can find works on 67-68 but no 69.

Also, I am trying to get the box from a local auto parts store but they can't seem to determine whether or not it came from a normal or an IROC camaro. Can I just determine that it is the IROC box if it has 2.5 turns lock to lock? That is all the information they can give me.

Thanks!

Are there any markings that would help me to identify one of these boxes. I am doing some swapping with a guy on some interior pieces and he is going to pull the steering box out of a third gen V8 car as part of the swap.

short of measuring the input shaft and out put shaft idk... i dont think there are any real part numbers on it. but if it came off a third gen v8 car chances are it is the quick ratio the code i see in my comp at work comes up that the quick ratio boxes are the ones without soft ride suspension FE1 code

If my stock pitman arm is worn out I will want to replace it to get rid of the slop in the steering. Anyone know where to get a good replacement for a 69 bird?

What I did when I was looking for a quick ratio box was take a pair of vise-grips and a rag with me (keeps the splines from getting damaged). Clamp the vise-grips over the rag and turn the shaft to full lock in one direction and then turn it to full lock the other way. Count the numbers of turns. The only thing this will tell you is if it's a quick ratio box or not. Also it'll have a elongated / squarish top cover w/4bolts and round outer edges. The boxes from the factory have "XH" stamped on them. AC Delco shows a listing for the 87-92 IROC's and Z28's that's 2-2.5 turns, PN 36-0516561. It doesn't specify whether it's for the ones w/16" wheels or for all. The one for the GBody's is 36-0516530 if you're interested, that one's about 3-3.5 turns.
Hope that helps some.
Larry.

What pump and hoses are you using? When I did this swap I had to swage in the Lee adapter in order to get the proper flare for my hoses. No big deal at all, just something you won't want to overlook.

I reused my stock 69 camaro pitman arm. I just swapped in the Lee rag joint and flare adapters and was off and running.

I just asked for a steering box for an 87 IROC and no follow-up questions were asked. You cannot be disappointed with the swap. It makes that much difference.

Now, if I could only get the same steering feel in my 69 corvette....

If that's $117 for an IROC box, that's a great deal. I paid about $160, I think, four years ago. Any other mod I made to my car never came close to the steering swap in terms of bang for the buck.

I was at Advance Auto Parts tonight and the price was around 115 with a core. It was actually cheaper than the standard box. In their computer it specified 2.5 lock to lock, the other is 3.5 lock to lock I think.

The 2.5 is the IROC box.

I had a heck of a time getting the pitman arm off my IROC box.

Would it be easier to remove the pitman arm off the original the box is still mounted on the car?

I guess I still don't understand the pitman arm issue. If I buy a new pitman arm, does it need to be for a 69 firebird or the year specific part for the IROC camaro??

Always use the pitman for the car it is going on. The pitman for the third gen would not even come close to fitting, early F-body is a rear steer while all the rest of the F-bodies are front steer.

The 2.5 is the IROC box.

For sure, I might not have been clear that the 2.5 lock to lock IROC box was actually cheaper than the stock box which is 3.5 lock to lock.
