View Full Version : Media blasting, body straightening, priming...how much time?

This is a horribly vague question but one that I've been considering for my project car.

For a car that has zero visible rust and has what appears to be minimal body work needed if any, what sort of time table would one be looking at for media blasting the car inside and out and priming the car inside and out?

I'm mechanically inclined and a former auto-tech, but I've got limited experience doing body work. I'm a quick learner and pretty good with a wrench but have no way to gauge how big this sort of project will be without doing something like this in the past. Assuming 10-15 hours a week spent on the car in my garage, are we talking weeks? Months?

Yeah its difficult to give you an accurate time frame too many variables involved. Instead of trying to figure out how much time just break everything down to smaller "to do list" it will help keep you on track and you wont feel overwhelmed with your project. Planning helps but you cant predict what lurks under a nice looking paint job. When you say sandblast I assume you mean media blasting. Are you going to do this yourself your sub it out? If you tackle the job yourself go to the junk yard and get a couple of hood to practice on.

Thanks - I was considering doing it myself just for the experience. But like I said, I'm more a mechanical kind of guy than a body guy - so I'm not sure I want to tackle something and risk getting in too deep. I did some more reading and it looks like I might be able to complete this more easily by using paint stripper for the larger panels and then media blast the smaller crevices.

Along the same lines, has anyone had any experience with Dry Ice blasting? Seems to eliminate the issue of debris with media blasting and doesn't accumulate in the crevices like media blasting can.
