Most of the compressors that came on LS engine GM trucks were fixed. I believe this one is. It's probably a 10cyl axial (double ended 5 piston), 170cc fixed. Variables typically have a v in their PN. You should be fine with the Gen 2 system and this compressor.

Internally controlled variable compressors typically have a control valve installed in the compressor body. It is often held in by a snap ring. OEM compressors always have a pressure relief valve which is not the same and is usually screwed in and has a hole in it. Externally controlled variable compressors, which are mostly installed in european luxury cars will have a solenoid valve installed in the compressor body with two wires (this can be confused with a pressure switch). Some externally controlled compressors will not have an electric clutch and run all the time although they sometimes will have a breakaway clutch to prevent belt breakage in the case of a compressor failure.

Bottom line, variable compressors are sometimes difficult to identify.

Physically are the truck compressors the same as the car LS compressors? Will they bolt in as a replacement option to the variable compressor? There is so much talk about the LS compressors not working with the VA systems - wondering if this is a workaround.
