Project Triple Threat Trans Am 7/15/10
There is not much to show at this point because it has just recently been stripped. It will be getting the full pro-touring treatment though.
Since I want to be able to drag race as well as have a car that will handle, I am going with a 3-4 link from Art Morrison Engineering. Frank at Prodigy got them to engineer one for this car so it is the first 2nd gen that AME built this for. So thanks to him 2nd gen owners will have a new option since the engineering has now been done. The only drawback is the car will have to be back halved. The engineering drawings are now in Franks's hands and once he approves the parts will get built. He has partnered up with Chad, his good friend at Fletcher's Customs to help me move it along as quickly as possible so the car will actually be a joint venture.
I had this put the car together with a new 400 to get it to the point where I could sell it since I have a few other 2nd gens that are nicer. One being a pro-mod the other's restorations. After doing that, I changed my mind and started stripping it. Drove it less than 20 miles as it was.
Here is what it started out as..

The motor is here and ready to rock other than new polished aluminum valve covers that will hook up to the vacumm pump.
The motor is a 720hp 535 Pontiac built using the IA2 block. It has some custom work on the recently released Northwind manifold done to get it to fit a shaker hood. I had the heads, intake and timing cover polished and Zoop sealed or powder coated in clear.
I have now just about decided that I will procharge it but will let it go as is for the moment.

I want to set the new standard for 2nd gen TAs. All that AME high tech stuff should make that automatic shouldn't it? :woot:

Very cool. i'm so glad to see another 2nd gen getting built.
is that another TA you have next to the engine?
Yes it is. I have a "few" 2nd Gen Trans Ams at the moment. The blue one is my current favorite. 1979 TA with a 70 HO455 with eheads and a solid roller, TH450, slide-a-links 3.90 Richmond. Pretty much a restomod I worked on over the last 2 years. It was a piece of junk when I got it. Pretty nice now though not a corner-carver like the new aftermarket stuff. It still handles the turns very well in almost stock form.
Just took it in for paint though. The paint was okay but if you looked closely you could see sanding scratches in some places and a couple of other minor flaws that drove me crazy.
The photo below is a link to a slideshow of some of the work I did on it. I could do a thread on it but it isn't a true Pro-touring car.

So the TTTA is headed to Fletcher's Customs. The change in suspension plans is pushing the TTTA project into a schedule funnel at Prodigy Customs. We were originally doing just sheetmetal and suspension, but Doug now wants someone to take the project all the way. Doug is super anxious to get the car done ASAP and the project has snowballed into a monster (a really cool monster) and we simply will not be able to fit a full build of this magnitude into Doug's schedule without disrupting the other 20 projects on the schedule.
And since my buddy Chad just finished shaking out the Freedom Bird and since he has some time on his hands for a one on one project, he can probably have the entire build done by the end of the year. So it works perfect for everyone for Chad to take this one over.
So Prodigy is still very involved as consultants and parts suppliers. We support the project 100%. We can't wait to see the project finished. We know Chad will do a hell of a job!

Thanks to both Frank and Chad for helping me out on this. I should have named this project "scope creep" because the project does seem to have grown exponentially from some bolt in stuff to one that invloves cutting the car up pretty good.
It should be one of a kind if nothing else :-)

We just did a 12 hour turn-and-burn from my place in South GA down to Frank's in Orlando. The car is now safely back at my shop... More pics and details coming soon... I'm headed to bed.
This project is a true definition of what two friends and two builders in the industry working together can do! The car and Doug's plans just got to be a little more than Frank's schedule would allow... And the car has taken on an extremely cool life of its own! And that's where Fletcher's Customs comes in; having wrapped up FreedomBird and my Camaro basically done we had some free space and time, something that Frank did not have with his shop and schedule full of cars.
Frank, myself and Doug all came to a mutual decision for me to take on the project and take it a little further. Since bringing the home we hired Ben Hermance with Hermance Design to do the official rendering! We are shooting for the baddest 78 T/A on the planet! Look for the use of some carbon fiber, custom body mods, and some other cool tricks we've got in the works to make this the best handling and by far best looking and BADDEST T/A ON THE PLANET!!
A LOT more details coming in the near future. This has all happened pretty quickly so there's still a ton of details to get worked out...

The Custom Art Morrison 5 link rear suspension. This is the second one built my good buddy Frank at Prodigy Customs did the design and work with Art Morrison to make this a reality. He is installing the #1 unit into his 69 Camaro Project "Unfair". This will be the first one to be built for a 2nd gen F-body.
Couple of answers to questions I know will come up
-Removal of certain bars allows for different setups for road racing and drag racing
-That right there is a true no compromise road race 3 link set up when the upper outer bars are removed. That is also a true no compromise Drag Race 4 link (just like a Pro Stocker) when the upper center bar is removed! Quite honestly this is one of those things that is right in front of you no one saw it!
-A car with the ability to quickly (few hours) transform from a great autocross / road race car to a great drag car by moving some stuff around and swapping some easy to change Components (Read more later). The idea was for a suspension system with massive adjust ability.
-Does the car have to be Back halfed?- yes it does, you must remove rear rails, floors, etc. All will have to be fabricated once rear clip is installed. The first gen piece will not be back half job, only require removing rear frame rails and re welding new rail that are formed to fit factory floor.
-How big a tire can this handle? More then a notched factory frame as long as you do not use pre packaged tubs. The outer frame rails are 1" more narrow then the narrowest possible frame width with thinnest factory frame rail notch one can do. And what is so cool is you not only keep a full rail where you normally notch, but you have a stronger rail also. Our drag tires will be 345 / 35 / 18 Drag Radials with a section around 14.5"! So we will be making bigger mini tubs
These are pics of the rear clip for "Project Unfair" that Prodigy Customs is building

Thats a sweet piece of engineering...I love that stuff, its one of the things that attracts me to Pro-Touring.
I've been following Doug's build at Trans Am Country....can't wait to see it all happen.
If this is going all out, perhaps you could convince Anvil to do a carbon fiber 77/78 nose panel. I know there is a need for a good, straight fitting glass or carbon fiber nose for these year cars.
Nice to see more 2nd gens getting the PT treatment.

You can get a fiberglass nose for a 78 from Year One. They developed it for the BRE Trans Am. I bought one a year or 2 ago and stuck it in storage in case I wanted it for this build.

I've heard mixed reviews of both the VFN nose and hte Year One nose...which surprised me as at least the YO nose looked to be a much better finished part. Both different builders wound up modifying their noses to fit.
I have no personal experience with either part....when I owned a 77 T/A I was planning on buying the YO nose for when it was going to be painted....but now I'm a 71 owner.

WE are in a holding pattern waiting on the parts to start showing up. WE are delivering a project this weekend and clearing the way for "TTTA" to come into its new home. Over the next couple of week while we are waiting we will be doing some minor things like shaving and smoothing firewall, starting some rust repair, and getting her on the custom built jig we are designing and building now.
Ben hermance has got some very trick things designed for the project that will surely cement this car as the baddest 78 T/A on the planet

Ben Hermance hits another home run. Same feel as the "Freedombird" keep the stock apearance but improve what GM designed. Slight flaring of the quarters, small sheetmetal flares, and some carbon used for a splitter and some rocker extensions. Plus addition for carbon hood and decklid from Anvil and albert at carbon creations. Looking forward to starting on this thing. Just waiting on the morrison stuff to show up.
I guess i should base my business plan around second gens. I'm getting to be a expert with them.

Thanks for the comments guys and thanks to Chad and Doug for getting me involved. I was thrilled to be a part of doing something Non-Bandit inspired for the later 2nd gen cars.
I'm loving this trickle down effect that's going on throughout the pro-touring movement right now. We're starting to see a ton of non-A-list cars get some attention and the "new-classics" are emerging all over the place. Personally, I can't wait until it trickles into the 80's with all the uber-popular G-body cars and 3rd gen F-bodies. I've got loads of ideas for them that have been brewing for years...heh heh heh.

Not too many serious Pontiacs around here, though there are a few. I have to go to Summerville this afternoon to check on my Blue TA to see how the paint work is coming. I am hoping it will get sprayed tomorrow... That is far from a sure thing though. LOL

Anvil is already working on making these parts for another car besides mine. At least that is what I understand. I think they will be available in the near future. They already make parts for the 70-73 Trans Ams.

Speaking about my blue 79... No pics. It was supposed to be sprayed this past weekend, then yesterday and now Thursday evening... We'll see. I need it done so he can get the other two 2nd gens that he has of mine painted. He does good work but if I knew how long it was going to take, I'd have given him only one car at a time.

You need to talk with Chad Fletcher at Fletcher's Customs. I'm in the process of getting a late 70's hood to him so that it can be used as a mold for the carbon fiber version. I don't know who he is working with but I know they are ready to move on it now so getting the hood is somewhat urgent.

Its not really specific at all. Its a full back half job. Although the frame is designed around the 70-81 models 2nd gens. IT requires new floor, tubs ,and fabwork in the rear.

Yeah we are full swing!! I forgot how much fun it is to cut the floors completly out of a car. It doesn't come out in one section. WE got the clip ready to go in the rear. Doing lots of measuring, calculations, and doing it all over again. No turning back once you get it welded in the car. So got to make sure everything is correct.
More pics coming this week

Finally the long overdue update!! Its been a rough couple of months with some family medical issues, at just being swamped with everything else life can throw at you (flu, pneumonia, and now bronchitus). We finally got to concentrate 100% to this project starting last week. After roughly 10 hours with a plasma, sawzall and other assorted gadgets we got the floor cut out from the front seat mount back. We will be fabbing all new sheetmetal for the floors, trans tunnel, wheel tubs, and trunk floor. Next up came measuring, measuring, and measuring some more. The rear clip come over sized from Morrison and you cut it to fit the dimension to your liking. Once I was happy with all the measurements we then went forward with cutting off some of the front crossmember so that it would meet the measurement for inside to inside of the rockers. Before moving the clip under the car we made some 14"x 6" plates that were welded to the inner rocker structure to give something to mate the rear clip.
Once the plates were installed the clip slid under the car and right into place like it was suppossed to!! Getting all the dimensions and measurements correct is the key to this project. Once it was under the car I checked, and then double checked all the measurements again, again. Then actually decided to quit and sleep on it for night. After I was happy I proceeded to weld the front crossmember to the plates we made. The rear clip is now part of the car.
We still got some more to do before it comes off the jig table. I will be making some plates and gussets that use the rear bumper mount locations to tie into the new frame. Basically just like the factory did with the bumper to floor pieces they had installed. Once we get these plates done and welded in the car will come and go on the lift to have the front clip installed and then sit the car down on its on weight and start the sheetmetal work.

Great engineering on the 4 link.....however several leaf spring 2nd Gen Camaros have been mid to low 7's in the 1/4. There is one that may get to the 6's on 275's. Mary's car does just fine for Protouring fun on leaf springs.......do you really need a 4/3 link or do you just want it?!!!

To offically answer your question... This entire car is 100% "WANT". Right now I am a one man show and this car is way more car than I know how to drive. I'll take it, have fun with it, drive the snot out of it whenever I can, hopefully make some new friends who are like minded pro-touring folks who I can learn from. With a little luck, I hope to be able to get some of the better drivers to hop in this thing and show me what it can really do, so I can have goals to shoot for. I am already making some new friend just in the build process. It is my escape from the daily grind.
There is little doubt that the driver is the make or break piece the puzzle. The 4 link certainly helps in drag racing more than the 3 link helps in the autocross world but a good driver can win in anything set up "close enough." I don't see many cars that can do both drag racing and autocross except for some of the newer turbo imports or Corvettes. That is not my thing though.
The other things is that this is Pro-Touring... If we just built to what we need and not what we want, you'd never see all those 6 figure rebuilds of cars worth 4 figures to begin with. While my car is not to that level, I could certainly buy a new Corvette, 380z, etc. for less than I will spend to build this thing and would have bought a more refined car. But thousands of other folks would have the same thing. Building something that can out perform most of the new muscle from old American muscle is 1/2 the fun.

Because of the insane horsepower Doug will be making we are going to do a built Magnum for him. He has the same problem we have with Unfair in that there really is no comfortable street transmission that can handle the dragstrip power these cars will make combined with the traction. The built magnum we are doing is running in some 850TQ cars right now, we are going to see if we can break it in Unfair and Doug's car. Hopefully boost control on Unfair and timing NOS delivery on Doug's car will let us get out of the hole without leaving the trans on the floor. But it is 1969 and we are walking on the moon on this one, so.....................

Here's some weak old updates. I've been a little slow working the last few weeks. Was out of town for ten days, then sick, now my wife is in Africa for 10 days on a mission trip so I am pulling daddy duty 24/7 with the two kids.
I struggled with how and what to do for subframe connectors. Cause there were some issues that had to be addressed. The low ride height, not getting way up inside the car, and clearance under neath for everything else. I studied, and studied, I made parts, I made more parts, only to finally decide on something so simple a "cave man could do it". To keep it simple I simply used (2) pieces of 1 5/8" .120 wall DOM tubing that I seam welded together, then fired up the new CNC plasma and made some simple (4) bolt flanges , and got everything welded together. Car is now tied together, and the flanges still allow me to be able to remove the subframe, for painting and for any future things. The KISS principal at its finest (keep it simple stupid)!! I am making some simple weld on brackets to put on each end where is welded to give a little more weld area and kind of a double shear affect on the mounting locations
We are waiting on some parts to show up like trans, exhaust parts, and seats. Then I can start building and fabricating the floor structure and floors them selves. anyway on to the pictures

Nicely and simply done chad. Just goes to show you dont have to throw big $ at a problem all the time to get a clean, good looking and effective solution. I too am modifying my previously welded in subframe connectors to be removeable using a similar 4 bolt end plate. I am going to be running a tube through the firewall from the roll cage going forward to the subframe near the A-arms.......not sure if I can go forward of the A-arms yet. Either way it will be bolt together there too to allow removal if necessary.

Very nice. So its a trunk floor drop through mount?
I was thinking how a vertical tank fitted above the axle, in the area behind the rear seat, might be nice from a safety point of view...recessed flip open filler in the sail panel area.
But then you have the issue of carrying X weight of fuel 18-24" higher than where it would mount at floor level, which would surely not help the triple threat plan at all, lol.

Got a little accomplished over the weekend. Between blowing a seal on the two post lift hydro cylinder and almost dumping the car, and then my $20,000 plasma cnc machine crashing on me, it was a rather eventful weekend. Excuse oil dry in the pictures. When the cylinder blew, it sprayed everything within 30 feet with hydraulic oil. So we has quite a mess of oil dry everywhere trying to clean it up.
Any on to the details. I have been a little worried about structural rigidity of the body itself, with it no longer having the floor structure and all the factory cross members and bracing that are apart of the floor. So I cooked up the idea to reinforce the rockers. Fired up the plasma and cut a couple pieces of 1/8" plate to match the rocker from toe panel to where they meet the new morrision rear clip. Fully seam welded on the top and at the bottom at the lower rocker area. Then is that wasn't enough, took a couple pieces 1.75" DOM tubing , notched the ends to meet up with the subframe connectors made earlier and then welded them off to the new rocker structure. Should be plenty strong now. Only thing left to do is make a body mount plate for the rear subframe mount and get it on the car.
Also got a 1 square tubing structure built and welded up for the fuel cell

Trying to get everything fitted and in position before I start floors. That way I can get exhaust tucked up in car as high as possible, so in turn we can keep a low ride height. Basically building from trans crossmember all the the way to the back of the car. PLans are for the exhaust to exit between inner quarter and rear frame rails. Almost exactly like it would stock but the way I am building it actually will go up into trunk a little and completely over the rear suspension setup and out of the way. Still got a good bit to go but getting closer. Mixture of parts laying around, some new old 3" stainless Flowmaster tubing I had laying around, some leftover Pypes bends from Ty's car, Stainless Works 3" v-band clamps and some new pieces from here and there. You can also see the plasma cut hangars I designed to mount the exhaust to the crossmembers. There will be a 6' long stainless flex connector installed between headers and the front trans x-member to take care of engine movement. I am mig weldeding everything, and then will come back and fully polish the welds once completed then sent to a local company here for ceramic coating

Here is the latest. Chad had some stuff come up like we all do and things slowed down for a while. He's back in the saddle now and expects to have the fabrication done by the end of the year. Pics from several weeks ago. These are DSE tubs that had 2" added to them.

Hydyne Motorsports is custom making a set of one off wheels. Here are the centers fresh from cutting. They will be polished and then anodized a dark grey.

A few more pics from Chad's cell phone. Engine and transmission finallygetting fitted to the car. It looks like the engine will need to go back into the firewall several inches so it can drop in back of the rack and pinion. More work but it should help with the handling a bit. The transmission crossmember is going to have to move back a few inches as well.

will the stock design for 70-81 fit it? I'm guessing the ones you ordered from Ron wont be enough? I know Roger Bolliger has a set on his 700 hp Butler Jerry Titus TA clone car. My HO Racing Tri-y's were only 1 5/8" and they squeezed out well over 1000 on my car, but the turbo helped :D

No. Those won't work on this car due to the pipe diameter. Ron said he would like to make a set for it once he gets caught up. I'd love to have his work on this build though just to help showcase his work.

I have been a little lazy on updates. The car has progressed over the past few months, and some design changes have been altered and some big changes to make this car one of a kind are beginning.
Wheel tubs, I kept to the KISS rule and used a off the shelf set of DSE tubs, and added a 2.5" strip to the center to widen them to meet up with the AME rails in the back. WE now have room for a 15" wide tire with room to spare. My 345's had 2" clearance inside.

SO now lets talk about Motor placement!! How about a full 12.25" of setback!!! This requires full rework of the firewall, cowl section, some of the dash, and lots of fab work of the mounts. Lots of head scratching and yelling with Jerry but I finally came up with something I am happy with

Who makes this timing chain cover?
The timing cover is made by R.A.R.E. If you go to their website, you get get is polished or unpolished IIRC.
Also, I just got word from Chad that the car actually is making some progress again. Hopefully he'll jump on here and post some updates.

Has anyone written a review of how it works? aka quality of product and cooling

The small block chevy pump is a better pump, period. A definite improvement. Not to mention 4 bolts and easy to change out. I would have gone this route if I hadnt already purchased the March Track Serpentine system. Doug.....we need to get your car and mine together for pics when done. We both have an AWFUL lot of shiny stuff. lol

yes. I am downsizing my shop and the amount of customer work I'm doing basically do to family and time. So Doug, myself and Dan Hollohan decided to move the car to Dan's shop

Well, as with all such projects, this one is taking a long and winding road to get to completion. The car is back at my home now as Chad was unable to finish the car. Took it to Dan Holohan for an assessment and he gave me the unvarnished truth. Basically, I have a lot of really cool parts and a lot of problems to solve.
So at first I decided to just sell it off for parts and start over but since then I have had a change of heart and decided to do this as a general contractor type job. I'll sub out the stuff I don't feel comfortable doing and do the rest myself.
Here are some "as it sits" photos...

One of Dan's suggestions that I liked was to make this a full frame car so the body can be removed in order to powdercoat the chassis. I'll get rid of the round tube stuff that was added in which I highlighted in the large blue oval and tie the front and back chassis together with the same tubing used by AME. The tie in within the small blue oval will be left though I prefer to use something other than round tubing since it just doesn't fit well visually with rest of the frame.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/11/IMG_08651-1.jpg
Then we'll cut the frame loose from the body in the only other point it is welded in, which is where the cross member hits the rockers. See area highlighted in red.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/11/IMG_0868a-1.jpg
I'll put plates on the ends of the frame crossmembers and matching plates in the rockers and have it bolt in there.
Then we'll cut the fuel cell "basket" that was fabricated loose and move it forward a few inches in order to trim the rear frame rails to the proper length and move the cross rail back so it can sit behind the rear pan without interfering with the bumper mounts as it does now.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/11/IMG_0881-1.jpghttps://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/11/IMG_0882-1.jpg
Once these are located properly, I'll put end plates in place with bolt holes that will allow the endplates, body and bumper supports to all be held together with the same 4 bolts on each side.

A poncho power plant relocated further (significantly) back so as to reduce unsprung weight = Super cool build.
Is that crank pully readily available on the AM or is that a custom job? The Vintage AC bracket does not make AC belt selection easy if the vintage belt is lost or broken.

It is readily available. This one came from SD Performance, though I know Butler Performance and several other places have them as well.

Okay, I've met with multiple local fabricators now and have a pretty good plan in place. After so many people have advised, I am considering moving the engine forward closer to the stock position, but still have not decided on that.
I'm definitely going to make the car a solid frame with a bolt on body. I'll contact Art Morrison Enterprises and see if they have any suggestions to do this a different way other than what I have planned. Currently we have 4 bolt on areas planned for each side and will build an structural cage welded to the inside of the body shell. Since there will be numerous places in the top from which the car could be lifted using the cage, I am going to look for some sort of inserts that can be popped out and then have eye hooks that screw into permanently welded in attachement points. Just need to figure out how to make that look good.
So the tenative date to start fabrication will be in February, if the fabricator finishes up his current work by then. We have a few other interesting things going into this interior fabrication including a removable rear panel than will allow access to the 4 link area which will have a matching panel with a lexan insert to use for shows.
Going to be a different car for sure.
While I am waiting on the fabricator to get to the frame changes and interior sheetmetal, I will now go in search of a body guy capable of stretching the fenders to allow room for the big tires to sit more flush with the sides.

Marty -- Like anything Chad Fletcher touched --- he managed to mangle another project (I call it "fletchered" now around my shop). Pretty hard to recover from stuff like that. Kinda takes the wind out of your sails.
