Who the F#$% let a Yaris out there!? Really?!

It's a go-cart track. It belongs there more than we do!

Sweet pics Jason! Thanks for coming out.

Chad, 48.25 is smokin! Nice.

Can you remember doing anything differently or better on that particular lap?

Sort of. I know the area of the track that put me into the 49's several times was how I ran the combo of corners at the far end with the chicane. My 48 second lap came from running that really well and running the banked turn and the esses combo well. The car for sure has a 47 run in it, no idea if I can bring it out. Maybe if I could get all the above items run really well plus the inside 180* left turn done well then I could squeeze a high 47 out of it I think. I think I could go back 5 more times and not get it though. I'm terrible with setting up brake points and landmarks and stuff.

PS. 4K miles, RTTC, 3 goodguys autorcross weekends, buttonwillow track day (3.5 sessions) and 3 trips to Adam's and my front Nitto NT05's are very sorry looking ha ha!

Great picks, maybe next time the Yaris won't be in front of me. MSD problem is fixed and the truck feels like it has 50 extra hp. rear wheel spin is a ploblem for the first time.

Notice they were running without the Tire Chicane on the back straight...

If he could only get a 52.00 out of a LS3 SS 6speed Camaro without the 'slow you down' tire chicane...

Comparatively I ran a 50.52 with the Tire Chicane... in a car that weighs more, has less power, and sloppier suspension... and +2 doors.

He should hire me to do his fast driving, he can do the talking.

I forwarded the video over to Evan since that is him standing there checking out the cars in the black shirt. :spank2:

Doug

I'll go next week. I've got to get an alignment, and what I believe to be a pair of warped rotors fixed on my Mustang, but that should be a quick job. Somehow I get the feeling I'll be driving an oversteering mess, but that could be fun :)

Matt

*edit* I just noticed we got our (significantly less than) fifteen seconds of fame on an internet TV show that I doubt anyone one really watches. Still, that is Awesome, even if someone screwed up editing.

do yourself a favor, and buy your own caster/camer guage from someplace like Motorstate. Make your own turning plates (4 pcs sheetmetal 18" square, two to a stack with grease in the middle), and get some toe plates. Your life will improve when you no longer have to count on tire jockeys to mis-align your car :)

Yea, basically. Last year I got there at 11 AM and got 40 runs in before 4 PM, a huge contrast to the 3 runs I got at Goodguys i May. I imagine it will be more crowded this year, but it's the best bang for the buck that I've gotten to date.

So is there a tech inspection before you race?
And do you have to bring your own helmet or do they provide you with one?

...im almost done with questions here....
Do you have to call up and make a reservation to run in a session, or just is it just forst come first serve?

79-TA
08-29-2010, 10:18 PM
There is a tech inspection, but it's not very hard to pass. Whereas my Trans Am would fail a drag racing inspection for too much rubber fuel line, I have no such problem at AMP. If your battery hold down isn't the best, bring a roll of tape to tape the terminals with.

Adam's requires a helmet, but it doesn't have to be of any particular standard. Any motorcycle helmet will work. They do, however, have helmets available to rent should you not be able to bring one.

The sessions are basically first come, first serve, but you can call ahead of time to reserve a session. Just make sure you're there in time for the actual session.

1. Does the croud gather to watch you run?
Snickering rather than to watch
2. Is there a croud around your car in the pit area?
More of the snickering along with some pointing.
3. Do you leave a cloud of smoke at the start/finish line?
Does blue smoke count?
4. Does the announcer cheer you on?
Is that geer or cheer.
5. Does the announcer heckle you?
Until I point the car at the annoucing booth......under that cloud of smoke......hee hee hee
6. Do other drivers want to ride in your car?
To see the improper line.
7. Do spectators want to ride in your car?
Health insurance paid up?
8. Do your friends and family NOT want to ride in your car?
Family isn't allowed in public unsupervised, friends who has friends?
9. Does the announcer 'ready' the cone crew as you start a run?
No, but the cone crew does run for cover.

Wellllllllll, last night was..........interesting.

A 350Z lost a wheel, Don ended up in the dirt in the '32 and we killed the tranny in the Camaro.

Sal made 5 timed laps and the tranny let go on the 5th lap. Evan was riding shotgun on all laps except for the last one.

Lap #1 = 49.09
Lap #2 = 108.71 *flagged*
Lap #3 = 49.10
Lap #4 = 48.06
Lap #5 = 51.75 (he was coasting the whole last turn and straight)

I think Sal will be back next Tuesday providing we can get the tranny fixed. It was nice to meet you Justin and it was good to see you again Paul.

I think you've done great already. I could see some time being picked up by more negative camber and/or camber gain.

Check out the positive angle of your outside tire vs. the other two Camaros.

Went to Adams last night. While it was kind of lonely, (no other muscle), it was a great night at the track. A low car count gave us lots of runs. 6 in the first session, and 5 in the second. The truck handles great, totaly different feel. Brakes are fantastic. I ran a best of 48.06 on my last lap. For the first time I thought i could use more power. it's a whole new ballgame. here's a heads-up. Last sunday I went with a few guys down to Perris Raceway, They let us put a few cars on thier cart track. It is a .5 mi. lap, tighter than Adams, with a great 6 turn mid-section, and a cool elevation change. They are open to an autocross once a month starting in feb or march. I will keep you posted.

Yep, the tire held up fine. Dunlop makes a pretty tough tire. I'll order a replacement from tirerack later today.

I put my right front wheel on the curbing coming out of the banked turn. It was enough to push the tire up into the fender. After it hit, it brought the fender lip down with it and the fender lip started to slice the tire. I pulled off track the first chance I had, so nothing got hurt. The tire held air and got me home.

Well, count me out for a few weeks. Leak down showed low cyl. in #1, & #8. Hence the smoke it was coughing out. Sad part of the leak down test is that it showed the leaks to the bottm side. - I would much rather just pull the heads (which appear to be perfect) So out it came, ..... the culprit? ..... disintegrating ring lands, and thus cracked rings. Luckily no cyl. damage. Looks like constant checking saved us a bunch. Seems to have been some detonation as the root cause. I was going to swap intakes and injection to a 5.0 long runner style this week, now I'll have a bit more work to do. The question is, should I swap in the custom grind Bennet Racing cam thats been on the shelf waiting for it's turn? Hmmm. Anyway, it may be th '46 in Cost-Mesa. Topless it is.

Don kicked butt last night. He knocked 2 full seconds off his previous best time. 48.37 is now his new personal best and he backed that up with 4 other runs in the 48.xx range. He only stayed for one session and he plans on going back next week to get more seat time with the changes he's made. The chicane is still an area where he won't run 10/10's just due to the fact that the fiberglass fenders will be destroyed if he clips a tire.

He's got a bunch of pics on a disc so as soon as I get my hands on it I will post them.

It was nice to hear him completely excited about the car again after all he's been through with it the last few months.

Did you notice if the tire chicane was set up any differently (or tighter) than usual last night? My cousin went there for the first time yesterday in his Mustang and could not believe how much he had to slow down the tire chicane. It never phased me that much, so I was wondering if they might have had some inconsistency in where they set the chicane.

It was so narrow when I went a few weeks ago, I think I had to slow down to 20ish mph. Not only that but when they put it up they moved it towards the right side of the track so that if you took it at much of an angle you'd end up off track. I wish they'd use cones. The way it was set up could do a lot of damage to a car if a driver made an error.

I'll be going again tomorrow. This will be the Trans Am's last hurrah before getting parked for a while.

I can't win today.

Work got out super late and I didn't get home until 6:20. I thought about calling the AMP trip off, but my friend was going, so I couldn't just leave him stranded on his first trip.

I had to quick buy a dust cap, as I lost one during the little Costa Mesa autocross.

Then filling up the car and stopping by my grandparents for the 91 fast track pass took time.

Once well on my way, I realized I forgot my helmet.

I got to Adam's just in the nick of time to run, which meant I couldn't let my car cool off from the heat soak from the drive up.

I had to rent a random helmet for 5 dollars.

Despite being night, and cooler than last week, it still wasn't cold enough to help my cars heating problem in Riverside.

The car did the same ol' thing where it doesn't want to respond off of corners and kills my time.

The driver did the same ol' thing where he drives super timid with a heating car.

I ended up running a 52.8. For reference, my very first time out in my stock fox Mustang, I ran a low 53. My first time out in my Trans Am a year ago, complete with leaking valve covers, dying transmission, and a bit of tire rub, resulted in a 50 something. So, the car and I were freaking slow. Again. That's the 3rd event in a row now.

I left, only to realize that I still had the rented helmet in my car and they, in turn, had my driver's license.

Turning around to return the helmet put me just outside my fuel window for making it back home. I had to stop for gas.

I borrowed a Contour camera from my cousin and was looking forward to some decent in car video for a change.

I realized I forgot to put the micro SD card and ended up with nothing. I consoled myself by filming some of the drive home.

I normally have tacos with my friends on Tuesday. We normally loiter outside Rubios long after it closes, so I can still catch them even if I do make a trip out to AMP. This time, they had disbanded before I arrived.

Now I'm going to stay up late and get some things ready for school.

And I stupidly said I'd rig up some brakes on an old FSAE car at school for the purposes of towing tomorrow morning.

I hate Tuesdays.

Yea, they tried the new "Super S" layout. They basically stuck as many curves in the track as possible. My cousin was there last night with his 2011 5.0 Mustang and said it was super tight. He ran a 57.62 and was the 7th quickest car out of all 3 sessions. I hope they use the old layout on some nights. I'd like to be able to compare future times with some of my old ones.

Mike said they would do the original layout 2 times a month. He also said we could vote on the layout at their facebook page.

Sal and I went to help Don in the '32 last night. They were running the standard track layout and there were a ton of cars. The first session we were just trying to get the car to stick. There were a number of fast cars there including a couple 400WHP STI's, GT500, M6, a nicely modded EVO X shod with sticky tires, a R34 Skyline, and of course a number of Miatas.

A little back story. Don found out last week he hasn't had full throttle. A little modification to the cable and that was cured. He also just installed some 6 piston calipers up front to replace the 4 pistons he had. Between these two things the car now accelerates much quicker and stops much better. Pretty much rendering his previous experience behind the wheel useless because he felt like it was a whole new car.

The first session he came out swinging, immediately matching his previous best of mid 48's. In spite of him having a hard time controlling the power. He just felt unsettled because the car was not only power oversteering but it also had some understeer.(He had backed off on the alignment running almost zero camber) We played with the tire pressure on each set of runs trying to find a sweet spot for the new found power. By the end of the session he was starting to get acclimated to his new braking points and corner exit power-on and ended up in the top 10.

The 2nd session had 17 cars total. Don was fired up and extremely motivated to get his 47.XX pass. Unfortunately, he got a little too agressive and ended up in the dirt at the end of the first timed lap. He kept it away from the light poles but he went for a pretty scary ride. He pulled back into the pits so we could make sure everything was ok. After a quick lookover everything looked good so he prepared to go back out. Sal and I had been tracking the progress of his lap times on our phones and he was definitely on the fastest run up to the point of going off track. Don made a joke about finding the limit so now he will back off just a little bit.

He heads out once again. I clicked my phone at the start/stop point they use for the official timing. The car looks good through the tire chicane and into the right hand off camber u-turn. After that quick little S he is on the gas early and on a mission down the straight. The car sounds real good coming by the pits. He nails the brakes and manueveres through that slight right and into the left hand u-turn. He has a bit of understeer through the u-turn and gets back on the gas. Coming down the straight I hear the car bounce off the rev-limiter in 2nd(never heard that happen before). Into the long right hander and onto the front straight in front of the stands. He weaves through the back section and heads on to the back straight. The car understeer slightly around that right hander before the straight. He's on the gas and the car manages to get into 3rd gear down the straight. On the brakes hard, (I click the lap button on my phone) and he throws it through the chicane. I look down at my phone and it says.............47.53. I know there is a bunch of margin for error but then I hear the announcer say "forty seven eighty four". I was so excited I didn't even bother paying attention to the 2nd & 3rd lap. I walked up to Mike(the starting line guy) and asked him to confirm the time. He didn't have the numbers but he was skeptical the '32 had ran that fast. He said "There's no way he picked up a half second". One of the ladies standing there said "It was the Miata that ran the 47.84". I walked away with my slumped. I told Don that I was sure it was him that had ran the 47.

We headed back up top side after those laps and loaded the car on the trailer. We had to wait almost 20 minutes for them to post the results but Don did in fact run a 47.84 on that lap. The incredible thing though, he ran a 47.02 on lap #2. This put him in the 3rd fastest spot for the night.

Needless to say, we couldn't be more proud of his accomplisments. Congrats Don!

I'll be taking my Mustang up to Adam's for a shakedown today. I'm not sure which session I'll make, but probably not the 6PM one. My cousin will also go, but this time he'll be trying out a friend's Evo IX RS.

So the results from two weeks ago were that I ran a 52.00 and had trouble with the shifter mechanism in my car. Whenever I have trouble with my car, I just get too worried to really push. My cousin ran a 47.38 in 7 pm session and a 46.53 in the 8 pm session in the Evo.

I went back again yesterday with a new Hurst shifter and was finally able to push the car and find the limits a bit. I ended up with a 49.18. The car has more in it. I was mostly concentrating on my approach to the chicane. I'm still not heel-toeing aggressively enough to rev match there (I'm still not used to the closer spacing with the 3.55's as compared to my 2.73's; things happen faster) so I was getting a bit of rear lockup. This caused me to give myself a little room for error so I wouldn't turn in while the rear tires were skidding.

According to the Adam's schedule, next week is supposed to be "American vs Import Winter format competition." I think winter format just refers to the fact that you get 4 timed laps per run for the sake of tire temperature. I'm not sure how they're really going to make things any different than a normal week. Maybe they'll post "winners" on facebook or something.

Rob,

I got to thinking about Star Auto Parts when I saw them delivering to your shop yesterday. Those guys have been a great asset to us so I gave them a call. They are onboard with helping out financially as well. I'll hit you up on Monday with details.
