I'm in the process of swapping out my stock 8" rear in my 66 fastback for a 9". The rear housing I'm using for my 9" conversion is out of a 57 Ford (http://mustangforums.com/forum/#). The reason I did this is because the flange to flange measurement is the same as the 8", 52 1/4". However, the axle tubes are not necked down like the 8" housing was.

I'd like to install a rear sway bar but looking at some kits online, the hardware in the kits I'm seeing is for the smaller necked down housing used on the original 8". So my question is, are there a kit out there that will work for my 9" in a 66 mustang?

Thanks!

look into a 67 mustang. The 390s were backed up with a 9" with 3" tubes. They might sell the axle attacments by themselves and just buy the 65 width sway bar.

I believe these mount to the leaf spring, so tube size wouldn't matter. I would have to look under my car to be sure. Its been awhile since installed.

Are you sure you wanna install a rear sway bar on your Mustang? I had one on my 67 for awhile, but I thought it actually made the car handle worse. Under lateral load, it was just too stiff, and it would skid when it encountered bumps. I've spoken with other Mustang folks at the track and most of them don't run a rear sway bar. However, this is just my own personal opinion, and I'm no suspension expert by any means, so take it how you like.

You can run without depending on how your roll stiffness balance ends up. Some of the available leaf spring bushings stiffen (bind) in roll too. If you decide to run a rear bar you might think about fabricating one with splined stock car rear bars so you easily swap and tune. The splined rear bars are fairly inexpensive.

I'm running my own creation based on a late 90's crown vic sway bar. They are a perfect width to mount to the axle with the ends mounted to the inside of the frame rails. Not the best pictures:

That being said, I had read that ~0.75" was about right for the car. Any more and it oversteers. The sway bar I picked up at the wrecker was 0.82". My car oversteers....

"dont touch that, its hot.... pssst, ouch, yes it is...." Sometimes you just gotta figure stuff out for yourself....

I'm replacing it with a slightly undersized and adjustable unit this time as my lever arm is prett short, amplifying my already too big swaybar.
