Could it be? (http://www.thestate.com/2010/07/10/1371609/cheap-costs-in-chinese-factories.html)
Summary:
If costs increase by 50%, companies will begin returning to the US because costs will be equal, and there is no delay because of shipping.
Some bits from the article:
-Wham-O, the company that created the Hula-Hoop and Slip ‘n Slide, decided to bring half of its Frisbee production and some production of its other products back to the U.S.
-Printing a 9-by-9-inch, 334-page hardcover book in China costs about 44 to 45 cents now, with another 3 cents for shipping, said Rick Goodwin, a China trade veteran of 22 years, whose company links foreign buyers with Chinese suppliers. The same book costs 65 to 68 cents to make in the U.S.[/COLOR]
-China’s overall cost advantage is shrinking. Labor costs have been climbing about 15 percent a year since a 2008 labor contract law that made workers more aware of their rights.
-Tax preferences for foreign companies ended in 2007. Land, water, energy and shipping costs are on the rise
OUTSTANDING! I have been waiting to see that good old "MADE IN THE USA" on more things!!
Finally people will get an opportunity to learn how to use their hands for something other than typing and filing. I am sickened by the fact that we are such a service originated, goods imported country.

You know if we could get Chinese branches of the UAW, IBEW, and OCAW started, that would level the playing field.

I feel it won't be too long before some of the people you are talking about will learn that they have to give a liitle more to the manual labor and take a bit less from the wages on top or there won't be any money for anyone when they are out of business because they can't do all of the work themselves to pay the overhead.
I think it is about time that the playing field is closing in to be more equal and it never should have gotten to the point it has. Legislation should have always protected the American worker from imports but the lobbyists put way too much into the pockets of politicians a long time ago.
There are so many vacant buildings in our city that I don't understand why they keep builing the new ones and let them go idle when they can't sustain the payments and then move to another country ? A lot of grant money was spent for nothing.
Bottom line, I sure hope this is the changing of the times we all need.

Starting new unions and letting some of the old ones DIE would be better. I can tell you right now that the UAW local I belonged to never cared to educate the workers and deal with the corporation/management and make them better like they used to. Union pride went down the tubes along with higher union dues and nothing for it. Our local didn't even care about fair practice and safety issues and let the company do what they wanted out of fear for their own positions and the possiblity of going into management for their own personal gains. IT WAS SAD !!!
Unions are good if the people who run them aren't as corrupt as the corporations.

Speaking specifically to my experience... I almost quit my job to take an apprentice job with my best friend.... He is a plumber in NY... starting at 60K for an off the street manual labor apprentice....
The supply and demand still applies... stop allowing cheap manul labor to flood tha market and the price employers are willing to pay will also up....
No need for new legislation... how about some enforcemnt of the laws already on the book's....

Sad but true. HOWEVER, if the jobs start coming back over here, the trickle down will lead to a re-emergence of trade programs in public schools, and kids will grow up knowing the fun of working with your hands to create something.
Check out this book(Shopclass as Soulcraft) (http://www.amazon.com/Shop-Class-Soulcraft-Inquiry-Value/dp/1594202230). It talks about the demise of trade programs in the public school system and how it has played a part in an unhappy workforce pushing paperwork, and a society that can't even change a damn lightbulb.
It also mentions an interesting fact that strikes very close to home for me. The vast majority of people in trade programs at community colleges are already college graduates returning to school for a marketable skill or increased knowledge on certain subjects.
If all goes well, August 22nd I start an Automotive tech program at my local CC...

This is kinda related, but interesting... this group is offering up agricultural jobs to anyone who wants to take 'em, with the angle that if US Citizens are angry about illegals working in the fields, here's how to take those jobs away from the illegals.

of course jobs are going to start coming back here- right now, there are so many unemployed people that are willing to work for less than they earned when they were employed and people that still have jobs afraid that they are going to lose their jobs, so they will maybe not expect the annual raises like they used to get and accept cuts in benefits in order to keep their jobs.
this helps to even out the playing field with other countries, which helps create and keep jobs here.

I agree with this completly except for one thing, it is because of Obama protecting the unions that there hasn't been a strong effort to clean up the Gulf oil spill, he isn't allowing help to come from the outside because he is protecting union jobs and buying votes.

I know thats right!!.. I've had a lot of people that have come by and asked for work. They don't want to work most just want to show up and at the end of the week get a paycheck.
Has anyone else had people call and ask if your hiring, when you tell them "not right now" They ask you all kinds of questions about your business and when I asked why they needed to know so much they said " I need the information so I can put it on my unemployment papers....
I even told one guy "yes I could use a good hand" he asked what I did, I told him I was a granite countertop fabricator. He said, "Well, I never done that kind of work so I wouldn't be any good at it, could you give me your business name and phone number and everything so I can put it on my unemployment papers I've got to turn in?
Geeezzzz....

Unions are good if the people who run them aren't as corrupt as the corporations.
While it has been said so before a Union has degenerated into a socialist movement and unfortunately almost all will either spring up as one or degenerate into one.
Its too bad that some business owners are/were too greedy in the first place.
In this day and age there are enough laws and regulations in place to stop the abuse/neglect that they "cured" like long hours, no breaks, improper safety, etc.
But honestly a TRADE union, allowing a mass of similarly skilled workers to be pooled, then setting up a dedicated rating/organizing(for skill/training/certification) list, ie first in with all the cred gets first shot.
BUT a Union that pushes 35 guys at 35 jobs and just cause they hold a "Union" card they get hired, nah its not needed.
And Unions going in and getting ridiculous benefits and pay for menial non skilled jobs(excuse me but a guy standing in one spot screwing in 3 bolts and clipping a wire in place isnt skill)is ridiculous and one reason why jobs leave.
See if the wealth is redistributed soon all become even, then cycle will start over.
Nothing against hard working people but Unions HAVE forced unworthy people onto employers and kept them there for years rather than letting performance be a bench mark.
Too bad some things will never change, just get polished differently.
Also if you give up your ability/right to go walk in and talk to boss for raise, benefits, etc. then you give up freedom.
This is also why certain jobs had to go to performance review on a person by person scale or they would have a union started. BUT it costs almost as much as union bargaining.

I agree. It is sad that he is killing the average guy and using the protecting the union thing as if it was a good thing. It's just an excuse that appeases the votes for him like you say.
The double edge sword keeps swinging and dividing us all while some think it is good and others get eliminated. It's the elimination that is killing equailty and competition at the same time.
I will stop here because I know ,you get it, too!
