Well I took the plunge a few days ago and left AT&T and the iphone and went to Sprint's Evo phone. All I gotta say is WOW. This phone is amazing, and this is coming from a die hard Machead. I loved everything Mac, but lately they have been doing a lot of not so nice things.

This Evo is pretty much everything the iphone isn't and MORE....

I love my Droid, just wait till you start looking into rooting, and custom roms, and overclocking; then it gets really fun.

I have my Droid running at 1ghz with Bugless Beast Froyo version 0.4 with a smoked glass theme.

The new Droid X is coming out on the 15th. I'm gonna give it a go.

I'm assuming you upgraded from a 3g or 3gs? If so, that is a huge upgrade. I spent plenty of time with the EVO while I was trying to decide what to replace my original iPhone with. It's a great phone, however wasn't quite enough to draw me away from the iPhone 4.
I'm very interested to see what happens to Android over the next few releases. Google has said they want to focus on usability. It's good that they're taking user comments to heart and working to improve the OS.
I love that Apple finally has some competition. It has a way of keeping companies honest. Whatever smart phone you choose right now, it's hard to make a bad decision. :twothumbs

I actually had the 1st gen. iphone, and I was on the verge of just getting the iphone 4, but with the new tiered data plans through ATT i just didn't want to deal with the BS. Plus through my job Sprint gives me 25% off my entire bill where as ATT only gave me 20% off my first line. Money wise it made sense to leave!

I'm fed up with my 3G. After putting the new OS on it it has been terrible. It locks up on me, drops me from apps/web randomly, and is just sluggish. I was ready to get the Evo but my wife needs the coverage AT&T has over Sprint.

I'm hoping I don't have those issues with the iPhone 4.

You guys with all of the high tech toys....sheesh.

You're gonna laugh....
I just switched from rotary to pulse....man, I didn't know what I was missing...I can use those touch tone menus now. Phone company said that they didn't support my old rotary anymore that I would have to get with the times....and so they charge me an extra $3/mo for this pulse...uggh.
I'm about ready to drop th eland line altogether. I use my cell phone for everything, especially long distance, because it's cheaper due to the folks who I call long distance are in my network(Mom, Dad, etc).

If you put iOS 4 on an original 3g, it will likely be slow. It's a pretty big OS for that phone. I can tell you that my 4 flies in comparison with my old phone. I couldn't be happier.

That's what I suspected. I'll likely get the iPhone 4 unless I can show Verizon has equal or better coverage in the areas my wife travels. The Droid X looks sweet!

Haha, I watched that video today. Made me want something other than the iPhone even more. After looking at some side to side comparisons I'm really leaning toward the Droid X.

The Droid X(treme) is pretty slick, and definitely aimed dead at the I4, my next upgrade will be the Droid 2. Faster Processor, more RAM, big internal memory and a much improved keyboard, it's exactly what I want. This is one instance that I hope Motorolla does as they've always done and just keep new verions of the same thing rolling out for years(a la razer).

I have to present the iPhone 4 case a little, because there have been a lot of myths spread about it lately. Reasons to get an iPhone 4:

1. Great batter life and well-managed multitasking

2. Easier OS upgrades since they make the hardware and the software - fewer bugs, less chance of bricking your phone. Google has its work cut out for it supporting all those devices.

3. Best screen on any smartphone - see many reviews.

4. Best camera on any smartphone - see many reviews.

5. Antenna is better than any previous iPhone, even if you can do the "death grip" with sweaty palms, and even then just use a case and it's a moot point.

I guess the Android platform is good if you want to tinker, but I have my hands COMPLETELY FULL with car projects and don't have time to tinker on my phone. ;) I don't think Android phones are awful - it's a closer race than Mac vs. PC, where Windows is much slower, less secure, and a big memory hog, but for me the iPhone is a better balance of features than the Android platform offers.

I agree that the IPhone is an awsome piece of hardware, but any hardware is only as good as the software (AT&T) that runs it.

It has to have a good antenna to get ANY reception on AT&T's crappy network. If Apple makes the move to Verizon I'd grab one up in a heartbeat...until then HELL NO.

I have at least 5 friends that I can think of right off the bat that have an Iphone and then another phone on another network because AT&T sux so bad.

I love Mac fanboys, lol. 3 and 4 are subjective, so I won't touch them.

1. Depends way too much on useage patterns. My boss has an I4 and gets a day out of it, but is heavy on calls, I text and use the internet, including tethering and even with a 1ghz OC get a day and a half to two days. The other MAJOR droid advantage on this front is that I can and do have a spare battery, so I just pop out my dead one if I don't have charger acess and pop in my spare. Spare battery and battery dock charger were $50. How much does apple charce when your battery goes bad and you have to send it in to be replaced? Also, iOS4 oes finally have multi-tasking, but can you be on the phone and the internet at the same time yet? Not even with wifi?

2. Android software upgrades mayt not all come at the same time, but are pushed out as updates drectly to your phone just as easily as with iOS, and the hardware manufacturer still has the choice of keeping a newer version from loading if it's too heavy for their hardware, just like apple SHOULD be doing with the old iPhones, but isn't, and you can always manually update or roll back to OS at will, and its almost impossible to actually brick an android phone, unlike a jailbroken iPhone.

5. Still won't help if you have big hands or "are holding it wrong", lol, the fact that you can hold it wrong and lose reception is just sad.

Finally, Rooting and romming the phone takes about an hour, and you can still get OTA upgrades if you choose, Unlike a jailbroken iPhone that will brick if you do an OTA update/

I just started reading about the Droid 2, and it does seem like a nice option. Only thing I'm not sold on is the keyboard, and that's just because I've not had a phone with one before.

My boss bought the EVO recently. He calls it his "corded" cell phone, because it's always plugged into the charger. He was telling me he was going to have to buy a couple of extra batteries to make it through the day. Is the battery life that bad?

I hear it's not the greatest, but not so bad as your boss makes it sound. Of course I have no first hand experience with it.

That's one thing I noticed when I had a demo EVO. With everything set to default, it would last about 2/3 of the day on a full charge. If you shut off all the Sense UI interface fluff, bluetooth, wifi, 4g, etc it would last a full day.
A few friends of mine have them, and are really working on battery tuning. One was able to last about 2 full days after quite a bit of work.

The iphone is a little better on battery, but not as good as I had anticipated. I'd say I can go about 2.5 - 3 days under normal (for me) usage.

Well it's looking like I'll upgrade to iPhone 4. No one else in my family wants to switch carriers and it would cost an additional $110 a month for me.

Whoah, whoah, there. It's the Verizon network you can't be on the phone and the internet with at the same time! This is a HUGE difference between AT&T and Verizon - I was talking to a Droid Incredible owner and he was like "yeah, I would buy the phone except for AT&T" and I was like "AT&T has been fine for me. I could never go Verizon or Sprint until they fix the no-talk-and-web-unless-there's-wifi issue with their networks." Dude says "No, that's wrong - I can call you and browse at the same time." I said "Try it" and he called me and lo and behold, he couldn't load a web page while on the phone call while I could.

This is a big issue for me when I'm talking to someone and I need to look something up, or I'm on hold and I want to be productive, send and receive emails, etc. That's why Verizon or Sprint are a no-go for me ATM. I'm not always in WiFi range.

So, no-talk-and-data simultaneously are a Sprint and Verizon limitation, not an iPhone limitation at all since the iPhone, on AT&T exclusively here in the US, can do all this.

They've always been able to play music from the iPod part while using other apps, as well. iOS4 just gives the ability to do Pandora, Skype, etc., in the background, which is cool.

No one is forced to do new iPhone OS updates. A lot of people with iPhone 3Gs are holding back from iOS4 for that reason. The reception "issue" hasn't been a problem for my girlfriend, and now that she has a case for it, won't be.

I don't want to "Root and ROM" my phone, I just want to plug it into iTunes and go back to working on my car . . . I don't want to jailbreak or hack anything, I just want a great smart phone that works. Remember, this is a car forum . . . we want to spend time working on cars primarily, I would assume?

I won't get into this, but I will say that even with my original iphone I was able to talk on the phone and be on the internet at the same time, via wifi, or edge. I have a 3Gs now with the iOS4 and I haven't had any issues.

Wow, tons of good techy posts, thanks for the insights.

Another reason I bought the iPhone is most car stereos now have the iPod click-wheel control integrated. With a few songs on a USB chip, no biggie, but with 20+ Gig on my iPhone, the controls are a must.

I have had the 3G iPhone for 1 yr now, my wife for 2, and we have not had a single problem with the AT&T network in our area.
Verizon often had dark zones in our area, which is why we switched years ago.
