So am about to pickup the Bird, and she has been sitting for about ten years. The owner mentioned he had it started about a year ago.

I know the fuel, oil, etc and seals, rubber, etc are probably not too happy. Battery probably gone as well. Any tips on getting this puppy started?

I am thinking starting by taking the spark plugs out, dropping some oil, then try turning the engine by hand a few times (am assuming crank direction will to clockwise on a Firebird v8 400?) any issue with counter clock rotating - just in case it is needed?

Any other tips greatly appreciated, thanks!

Congrats on the purchase. :)

If you're in front of the car, looking at the motor, it will be turning clockwise. There should be no problem with turning it backward. If it was started a year ago, I doubt you'll have too much difficulty getting it started. Just make sure to check the basics. Good oil level, insure the intake and exhaust are clear of obstruction, drop good fuel in it and give her a go. Fuel, Air and Spark are all you need!

Are you intending to just get it up on a trailer, or are you wanting to drive it home?

I usually run a hose from a fuel can to the fuel pump so its getting fresh gas to the engine not the nasty stuff in the tank that maybe 10 years old.
