I have an brand new monster tranny 700r4 rated at 500hp. It has been sitting on the same crate it came on for 2 years. Do they ship them with oil in them from monster. One of their techs told me it might need to be rebuilt due to the time it has sat. Is this true? He said my seals most likely have gone bad. If it is shipped with no oil how can this happen?

They usually bench test them on a dyno of some sort to check line pressures and make adjustments. They drain the oil to ship, but it doesn't get every ounce of it out.

I have stored transmissions for longer than this, almost 10 years for one, and did not have a problem, although I did change the pan and other exterior seals. Where was it stored? Moisture, dirt?
I would try it out by installing it without a blind rebuild. Just do not use an old torque converter unless it is professionaly flushed.

It was stored by just sitting in my garage on the palate it came on. The converter is still attached to the tanny just as they shipped it. IT has no bag or anything protecting it. Just a little dust. The converter should be still be ok I hope.

I would just put it in and try it. Makes no sense it needs to be rebuilt. I had a used 4L60 I put in a Jeep project that sat for a couple years and when I started the thing up it was locked up. I took it apart down to the center support I believe, took the clutches out (I think they were just stuck together) and soaked them in ATF and put it back together and it worked great.

Inspect the front seal before you install the tranny, if there is "any doubt", pop that seal out and tap in a new one.....the tailshaft seal is easy to change if needed, but if that front pump seal leaks, the whole tranny has to come out to put in a new one.
