View Full Version : Where does this wire go?

68 Firebird. This wire runs through the firewall gutter, under the pass fender and heads back into the pass compartment. I opened the loom and there's only 1 wire. Where does it end up? Waht does it supply power too? I'm thinking maybe the pass side door switch that turns on the pass compartment light when you open the door? Reason I'm asking is that I'm putting in a new motor and want to clean up the engine compartment by hiding as many wires as possible/re-routing those that I can so that they are out of sight. Thanks in advance for your help!

One question? can you see what the wire connects to or does it disappear behind or under the fender. The reason I am asking is because the door switch wire is located inside the car under the dash. When I rewired my car the only wire that was located outside on the passenger side was the heater box wire, which disappears under the passenger fender. You have to take off the fender in order to reach it.

I think you are right. When I enlarge that pic I noticed the fan back there and thought it might feed into it. Since I'm going to be running without that I guess I can safely delete that wire! One wire down and a few more to go.
O.K., next round: I'm sure one of these is for the alternator. What are the other two devices for? I'd be looking to move these under a fender or elsewere also in an effort to clean up. What are these? Which is for the alternator? What is the small, round capacitor looking thing?

yep, blowa motor. you can relocate the relay to the radiator support then run that wire through and over the fender well.

Thanks! Do you have any ideas about the other three items in the last pic?
On another forum, someone wrote this: The smaller one on the left should be your horn relay and the larger one on the right should be your voltage regulator. The little round one I'm not sure of.

The large box is the voltage regulator, which is required if you have a stock style alternator. I purchased a one wire and deleted it. The smaller box is the horn relay. This not only is for the horn, but also as a junction point for power to the interior of the car. I kept this on my build because I am using a factory horn. One question for you is do you know where the blinker relay is? My hazards work, but my blinkers don't. Let me know if you have any more questions.

If you really want to clean things up, then I would can the voltage regulator in favor of an alternator with integrated voltage regulator (but I would recommend a 3-wire setup after reading the articles at the Mad site). The round component attached to the VR is a capacitor used for noise suppression.
You can also move the horn relay, but like John said, this is a primary junction point that is always hot. Make sure you preserve any connections to this point and if you do move it, make sure it isn't going to short out!

what car do you have?
most GM F body:
The hazard flasher is on the fuse block but the turn flasher is clipped to the reinforcment bar near the bach side of the instrument cluster. Silver in color and 2 wire.
Also BTW, that little round thing is the RFI capaciter for your voltage regulater.
