I found a local car club that is willing to let some of us join them at the Camarillo airport on Sunday September 19 2010 for a $50 per car autocross. We can't get that many spaces so it will fill up fast. I won't handle any of the registrations or anything else. I will pay my $50 and show up like everyone else. I also believe with each $50 you get a soda, chips and a hot dog and spectators can buy them for $4

They have a few rules and they are not biggies but you will need to stay all day.

Runs are from 8am to 5pm and there are 4 groups of 15.

Each lap takes about 1 minute and you will get on average 10-11 laps during the day.

Everyone that drives must also help out. There is a system in place where you will have cool down time, relax time, drive time and work time. They say if you don't want to pick up cones or flag don't come. Everyone will work in some way or another. They have vests made up with positions like cone worker, flag person e.t.c. and you will wear them

There are no prizes and they do it for fun and not as a competition.

My thoughts are to join them at least once to see if we like the facility, nobody freaks out that it looks like a plane is going to land on them, the condition of the runway are o.k. and so on.

If we are happy with it I will either hire them to bring the equipment and set it up or some how we buy our own stuff and do the entire thing ourselves.

If you are seriously interested in joining them on September 19 2010 all day "they keep each persons drivers license to prevent you from leaving early" then please reply here.

Their rules sound kinda tough, but what happens these days is drifter type young people come and run, then leave and don't work the event.

Oh well. No one is interested. I am going to back out of this and open the spots to the club hosting it. I thought for sure there would be 6-10 of us.

I am still on the fence. My oldest daughter's b-day is the 18th, as are 2 of my daughter's AYSO picture day. Chances are the 19th will ahve to be a b-day party day. IF I convince the wife to do it the prior or following weekend I am SOOO IN!!

Dude, you better attend something soon--I am starting to wonder if you actually sold your car and are afraid to tell us. If you are attending, let me know--I'll drive to your place and we will caravan up.

I know how Hollywood Cassanova feels about Auto X, anychance we can bribe him into joining us? Larry, tell him there's a road course and he will get points for wearing coveralls disguised as a driving suit if he attends.

Sounds like fun and it's always great to hang out with you guys. I'd like to say 'in', but I need to wrap up some testing with my car first before I can commit to it.

I found this video clip on the net of the Camarillo airport autocross from 2 months ago and if the course on September 19th is as technical as the one in the video clip, I'm not sure how much my car and I would enjoy it. A little too tight for me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_iDB0L7yoU&feature=player_embedded

It might be worth asking about the course setup for September 19th before committing.

Larry Callahan

I would imagine it would be like the last one they ran. Here is the club we will join and this is the last setup they used.

rrunner68
07-05-2010, 08:22 PM
Larry, was it just the sound or did it look like he hit about 10 cones, lol? But yeah, that does look to be a very tight course. I know some club designers like them that way. At some of my local events when the small car clubs make the tracks, you'd swear The planned it out with a Miata dropping cones out each side of the car as they drove at 5mph. But if it were easy, everyone could do it.

-The Stig-
07-06-2010, 06:55 AM
Sounds like a fun time, I'm all about making a fool of myself with my car. :)

I hope it's not too tight of a course... the G8 doesn't appreciate that... plus I'd like to give 1st gear a rest for once. lol

POS71RS
07-06-2010, 12:52 PM
I'm mostly just annoyed that I lived a few miles from that airport up until 2 years ago when I moved North... and I never heard of any local car clubs.

You can count me and my Mustang in . . . they don't mind that it's not a classic muscle car, right?

(The Trans Am is kind of lacking a functional 1st gear right now)

Larry Callahan
07-07-2010, 01:18 PM
I'm not sure how to do this other then the order people spoke up in the post. It looks like they only have 10-12 spots for us. I will know next week. Then, if it goes well and everyone enjoys it I will do the entire thing for just us and we can run up to 60 cars.

rrunner68
07-07-2010, 03:06 PM
I'd lets let the first 10 have dibs on a spot, and get a hotel locked on so we can all hang out. After a wek or so, people get wishy washy, offer up the spots.

Larry Callahan
07-11-2010, 06:14 PM
Here is a list I have from the posts above. I know some of you were on the fence and some were not sure.

Please let me know in the next few days. I am thinking to just mail the Corvair club a check to cover all the spots we can get so we don't miss out on any of them. Then, everyone can just pay me. I will need it ahead of time since I can't swing the cost if someone flakes or can't make it at the last minute.

Also, I would recommend that anyone interested in this subscribe to this post so you don't miss any updates or questions.

Nothing like hanging out with a bunch of car nuts!! beats working on a Saturday afternoon.. If anybody needs to make some last minute adjustment or repairs.. The shop is available! I am only about 10 miles from the Camarillo Airport..

If you need volunteers for this ill step up. I don't know if the car will be sorted out by then(im a state worker making minimum wage at the moment). I still need to get some wheels/tires(14's aren't cutting it) and get my steering gear fixed. But I can definitely help out. Bad news gentleman, I dont think I will be making it to the autocross. Im having some major issues with my T56 conversion and adapting my brakes and dont really want to rush the fab work. Hopefully I can have my car ready for the next autocross, but as of right now my spot is open.

Larry- we do need to start a list on who will be attending the BBQ on Saturday so that I can start planning the food..

JCG will be sponsering/hosting the BBQ... I have quite a few people coming on my side.. I guess @ this point I can call it an open house for the shop.. Carl & I were discussing this yesterday.. & their is nothing like just hanging out & talking cars & ideas for the future..
I miss hosting events.. so I am looking forward to this one!!

JCG is catering all food for this get together... Who ever attends only needs to bring their drinks of choice..

So lets start getting a head count!!

Regardless, I will meet up with the rest of the crew just off Bellflower Blvd at Bank of America @ 2250 Bellflower Blvd, LBC at approximately 3:30. From there, the group will consist of Jon, Stig, Brett, Jon/Justin and myself (so a total of 5 cars). We will then plan on heading from that location to either Hollywood's place, or perhaps Larry's, depending upon HW's work schedule. If neither works out, we will head straight for JCG.

I don't think I have everyone waivers. If you have not sent it yet make sure you at least show up with it filled out ready to go.

I attached it here again if you need it.

What about spectators? I would like to go out there Sunday, check it out and see all the cars run there. I have not been to a Auto-x before, so it would be cool to get some what familiar with how they run.

Thanks,
Jon

I'm not certain about spectators but I don't think it's a problem. Just show up say say you are some ones pit crew.

GRRRRRR!!!!

Some Neanderthal decided that it would be fun to wreck a seal on a 14' diameter bearing after the bearing had been installed. Now I have to wait until a new one shows up. If UPS gets here early enough I should be able to get home tomorrow night, else I'm out for Sunday morning, but may make the afternoon.

No red-eyes going west. 11:00am arrival Sunday LAX earliest. Yuck.

Have her drive the buggy out. That would be fun throught the cones.

It is un-freaking believable what "mechanics" can do. I had one guy yesterday who did not know what "back the nut off 1/2-turn" meant. Seriously. I told him back off 1/2 turn three times and he could not do it.

Good weekend guys... Saturday was awesome at JCG, food was wayyy delicious... once again, thanks Cris! Awesome!

And Sunday (race day) was legit, the morning session I wasn't feeling well, we rushed from the Hotel to the Airport thinking we had to be there on time, but turns out we could of taken our sweet time getting breakfast (First cars were supposed to leave the line at 8am, we didn't get going till 10am). Which would of helped me out a lot... my morning session was horrid. After lunch I felt so much better and I cut my times down overall by 6 seconds. Without digging my time slips from the car first run was 50.xx, last run was 44.xx.

Somewhat pleased for a 4000-4100lbs car.

Was good seeing everybody again... always a pleasure!

Doug, Jon, Brett H., Matt and I drove home down PCH through Malibu... killed some time so we didn't have to sit in traffic on the freeway.

Yeah, thanks for the tip on the PCH run, was very relaxing. Car was running warn for the drive home, I'm kinda scared to drain the trans tomorrow after work. Was a blast as usual to drive with you guys. I think the hanging out is on par with the driving time. I think that next year I'll start posting up all the Cal Club and San Diego SCCA stuff. You guys are getting good. If we can get 7+ cars at each event, they will give us points for vintage class.

The drive home on PCH was beautiful; couldn't have asked for nicer weather.

Sunday was a blast! The late start was kind of a bummer; if we had started on time, we would of had time for 1 more session. Oh well...

Thanks again Larry for organizing the whole thing! Glad to hear Motiv8r is drivable now.

And thank you Cris! The hospitality and food were top notch! It was really cool to see all of the cars in your shop.

Hope to do it again soon!

Dan Im in. Great group of people to hang out with. Your car looked bitchen pounding the pavement.....and it got plenty of looks on the caravan out with all the race inspired graphix.

Had a good weekend hanging out with the group. Cris did a bang up job with the BBQ at his shop....full catering spread. Thanks Larry and Cris for your contributions to this event.....Awsome fun.

Great Pics Larry!!!!! Thanks for getting them posted!!! Also thanks for getting this event put together--was a great time. The drive home was, in itself, worth the trip. The coast was perfect--sunset, clear---just an awesome drive.

Huge Thanks to Cris at JCG----the food was unbelieveable---Cris is a very gracious and generous host---even let me keep my car in his shop overnight and drove myself and Dan to and from the hotel. Couldn't ask for a nicer guy. Cars in his shop are impressive to say the least----amazing fab work, design and execution. Thanks again brother---party at my place next time (Taco's) in March.

It was great to see everyone.
