View Full Version : Side-View Mirror Suggestions?

Looking for a trick set of side-view mirrors. Specifically looking for something that is "compact" but obviously still useful. I am staying away from a stock Camaro unit and really would like to find something with a "Pro-Touring" flare.
I have been leaning towards the motorcycle industry as there are some unique designs out there.
Looking for "Road-Warrior"/"Street-Fighter" style.
Have yet to find anything I think will gel with my build. I was debating on the ones pictured below but they look a little too "cheap" in the plastic shell. Also they are only $15 on ebay for the pair.....might be a "get what you paid for" deal there.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.:1st:

I always liked the Vision mirrors. Sleek, not too big, but still a useable mirror.

And I happen to have a pair of VF-2's in my garage for sale ar a real good price! :-)

Those would be unique on a car.
Maybe some of these guys doing billet parts should start looking into doing mirrors next. Of coarse they would probably be $1000 a set.
sleek mounting that doesn't look like it belongs on a C5 would be great.

How about a more vintage sportscar look?
I went with these:

I love these vintage racing mirrors:

Unfortunately they cost:

Not sure if making them in billet will make them cheaper. I'm surprised somebody hasn't found a way to reproduce them cheaper in chrome specifically for first gen Camaros.

I can get those bullet mirrors cheap, and quality is very nice on them, about $50 a pair.
Funny, I just got off the phone with my customer on this very subject and think we have come up with some good options. One is the 92-98 Lesabre mirror, a more compact C5 looking mirror. We also were looking at 08-10 Challenger mirrors, but hard to find. Another is 70-71 Cuda mirrors, but expensive. We finally settled on one which I plan to use but I am not telling yet, as this has been a subject of many hours on the phone/internet and don't want to give away my hard work just yet.

I'm TRYING to make my car look dated...like around 1970. Check my pics in the link...
Vintage style is hot. So is the high tech look-
Either can look amazing if you nail it.
But, our elder rides look pretty cool with the vintage sportscar mirrors. None of them ever came with 'em, but they look right, and a lot better than the factory offerings IMO.
I got mine from a kit Cobra maker- they were like $60 for the pair. There are better quality ones out there, I'm sure. But, these are fine for me.

Vitaloni Californian mirrors... used on lots of vintage race cars, but still have a modern look to them. They look alot (if not the same) like the hollywood mirrors posted earlier.

I always wanted to keep the original look of the 1969 Camaro mirror on my car.
But , use a mirror that is just slightly larger ,and a wide angle mirror on the passenger side.
Like if a company made a replacement mirror that looked almost identical to the '69 mirror , but was larger..
One problem with the '69 mirrors is that you just can't see your blind spot.
The field of vision is too small.

The mirrors Matt(69MSA) is using on his stunning 69 Pro-touring Camaro are pretty cool and innovative. I think you can see several shots of them(he has the dark purple Camaro) in the 'Road trip to Pleasanton' thread under 'Open Discussions' starting on page 7.

O.K. guys.....Thanks to all for the great feedback and ideas.
I believe I found what I am looking for in a motorcycle accessory company called "Rizoma".
They make some very trick mirrors for sport bikes that I think would look great on any of our cars.
I have not made a final choice yet, but here are my top picks: (The first mirror is my "#1 Choice")
"Circuit 851" in Black

Sorry, but I hope you don't use one of the bike mirrors. Personally think they ruin the car. Our cars are supposed to be geared toward function and performance, and honestly those mirrors are almost worthless on a bike much less a car.

I agree.
Seeing them on a photo is one thing, but I think the proportions would look daft on a car.

I think his point was that they wouldn't provide any visibility for the rear, which looks very true. But I agree doesn't fit the aesthetics of our vehicles either.

I know...I agreed.....then added my own bit. lol.
Side mirrors are a very hard thing to get right.
People used to stick BMW m3 mirrors on to every modified car over here....now we all look back and think how stupid they looked.
Just because something is different from stock, certainly doesn't make it look nicer. Be careful.
Although it shouldn't really matter what you choose as long as your happy.....we have to chime in though, or it's pretty pointless having such a topic.

Thanks for your opinions fellas. Will consider them all.
I am not "locked in" on the moto-mirrors and something else may come into play before anything is bolted to the car.
Although if used I don't think they will "ruin the car" as mentioned. Putting neon undercarriage lights, mudflaps and GReady stickers on could very well ruin the car.
As we know they are parts. Parts can be put on a car as well be removed from a car.
I just want the mirrors to be simple & functional without being too large. I would go with the traditional racing mirror shown below but the vent windows interfere with the cage tubes.

Funny I see this every year. New idea that gets shot to hell, then wow, what do ya know...its a norm.
ZZ, do what you want that makes you happy about your car. If we followed everyones opinion we'd be still rolling on 15's and tuning our flat heads. Thanks for thinking outside of the box. Its guys like you that made pro-touring.

I agree...its your car, do what you think is best....the guys may have a point about the lack of vision from a bike mirror...on a bike your eye to mirror distance is closer than it would be in a car...might alter your field of view in the mirror somewhat. I'd try a bike mirror from a wrecking yard temporarily fitted to a daily driver....see how that works for you.

I agree, but I also know that not EVERY new idea becomes a norm. I also agree however that you can do whatever you like to your car - it's yours. There will always be people who like it and people who do not.
How much adjustment do bike mirrors have?
Vince
Adjustment isn't the problem. Most of them adjust pretty easily. The problem is function. My last project WAS a bike. I played around with mirrors quite a bit before settling on my final choice. Problem is that bike mirrors are relatively ineffective from the start - and ESPECIALLY the "custom billet" kinds with unique shapes. They're barely functional when your eyes are only about 18" or 24" away from the mirror and you're always moving your head around to actually use them. Guys building bikes using those kinds of mirrors are usually about the exact opposite of PT. PT puts function over form. Those bikes and mirrors put form over function. In general, everything about those designs are geared toward looks and NOT toward the REAL performance of the engine, the handling of the bike, real braking ability.
Break the mold, Brother! I like your style and the way you think. We need to step outside the box and look to other like-minded industries for inspiration now and then and you found some!
If you can modify the stands from one of the bike mirrors to mount cleanly to your door, I think it will look sweet.

Thanks again fellas. Everyone. :1st:
All opinions are important. :1st:
Whether some agree, or some disagree,...............its all about feedback. :1st:
Its always good to "round-table" an idea to see what others think as well as hear from experience. :1st:
I like the "cool factor" look of the slick moto-mirrors. However, as mentioned by some of you guys, they are small and provide less vision. Also they may be a little shakey causing a blurred view.
I know I can customize the mounting, hell eveything on my build has been chopped, sliced or welded in one way or another, so install can happen in some shape or form.
In this case I am still in the fence. Many aspects of my build started one way but ended up another. Its the nature of the beast.
If all else fails I might have to take a page from the movie "The Gumball Rally":

You can even get some Z/28 or SS emblems scribed into them and put LED markers inside them.

Good luck with using the Moto mirrors. Hopefully your experience will be better. I've never in my life seen one that didn't distort due to vibration so much that they weren't worthless above idle. You can usually see that there might be a road back there, and there might be a building, car, truck, or UFO somewhere on it. Chances of seeing a set of red lights on top of it? Zero.
