View Full Version : Fender Clearance

With all of these "slammed" PT cars, how's everyone getting front fender clearance? I mean, it seems as though most of these will go great in a straight line, but when it comes to turning, I'm not sure how the tires aren't rubbing on the fender?

Obviously you can roll the fender lip, but are most of you moving the wheels in significantly from the fender? What's a typical clearance from the tire to fender in a situation like this?

You just have to move the tire in enough to make it work. Some wheel well profiles work better than others, and it looks like yours will be somewhat difficult. Most cars I give about 3" between tire bulge and fender, depending on the suspansion used. Different KPIs, caster and camber settings will affect how much room is actually needed.

Edit: One more thing, if the tire-to-fender gap requirement is too much (because it ends up looking goofy), consider re-profiling the wheel opening.

I rolled the lip up tight and also reshaped the wheel opening to match the tire radius. I have clearance at full lock up to 3 inches of tire movement up. I attached a few pictures and a document I wrote up including the entire process with pictures and discriptions. If you don't fear metal work then I'd try to reshape the wheel opening to match the rim and tire opening.

And that article was helpful.. i really admire your car BTW as its inspiring !!!! im gona try and fit yet a larger wheels tire combo on mine i think im gonna have to flare them out in the opening as well as well im hunting junk fenders now to try some different idea's that the squirel in my head is spitting out!!

I just noticed your clip is moulded together man that's trick i would never have the nuts to do that !! had it cracked at all yet?? i was alway's worried about the amount of flex..

Thanks.

The front and rear molded bumpers and spoiler are holding up fine. I've bottomed the front spoiler out two or three times now scrapping the paint off the bottom on the corner without cracking any of the welds or seams.

Not recommended for the faint at heart but once I achieved optimal backspacing I took a baseball bat and rolled it in between the tire and the fender.

Dennis:

That document is a great illustration on reforming - very nice work! I'm a mechanical engineer as well, without any metal forming experience. But we may have to try this...
