I am in the process of changing frames between an 80 and 81 malibu.
During inspection of the front end on both cars I noticed that the distance between the back of the tie rod and the engine crossmember on the 80 is about 3/4'' which is enough to slide my finger in and on the 81 it is about 1.25'' on the passenger side and 1.75 on the drivers side.
Is this normal for it to be that different?
The difference, visually is apparent.
About 15 years ago this was my daily driver and used to have spring that were done. it would bounce up and down like crazy and one day I went over a dip and bottomed out the engine cross member and has a fairly big gash. Now that I think about it I wonder if I hit it hard enough where it affected the suspension.
Hopefully not.
