I decided to start a thread on my 1965 cutlass build here as my project is getting closer to completion. It is currently in the paint shop and the interior is at the uphostery shop. Will up date with pic's as things progress. Here is the build from scratch if anyone is interested. http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/conversions-hybrids/836762-1965-ls1-f85-project-pics.html

Back at you Jocko your olds is looking mighty good too.

I have sucessfully installed the door handles, locks, A-piler chrome , Mirror, antenna, rear tail pan & tail lights with out a scratch. Wish me luck I got a ways to go. The tail light lens are new repos that have just now become available.

A few cool interior parts have also arrived. The new kick panels with built in speakers look pretty nice. No respectable hot rod would be complete without a good set of tunes.

Thanks Rocky. Where did you get the kick panels? Custom made or off the shelf? That's the only downside to the Oldsmobiles--I can never get all the cool aftermarket parts the Chevelle guys have!! Where you located?

The kick panels are off the self. OPGI carries some. I bought mine from here. http://www.casmfg.com/index.htm I used this dealer from their site http://www.soundmove.com/kickpanels.htm

I am located in Texas near the DFW area.

I like the project, although I'm a little biased. The tail pan piece, is that repopped or rechromed? I am also interested in the paint color for the logo.

The Tail pan piece is original if you can believe that. It is a Texas car and most of the chrome is still nice. I painted the logo median Garnett red same color as my 1993 z71. If you wish to make it more exact to original go to the resto page on this site http://www.442bro.com/ The oem color is discussed. You may already know about these guy but if you don't know BRO is the Mosses of the 1965 442. There is a wealth of knowledge on his site. You can also join 65 442 forum. I use to be a member but I kicked myself off. They have olds red running thru their veins and they didn't care much for the LS1 *******izing a 65 cutlass. So Just don't tell them that Rockytopper sent you and you will be fine. They actually have a topic going on at the moment about your ride and the magazine. You would make their day if you pop in.

Thanks everyone. The color is 2009 nissan Titanium Grey paint code KAC. The color was used on the GTR. It is also called desert shadow effect same paint code. The pictures really don't do it justice. The color changes from dark grey to a bronze color depending on the lighting and viewing angle.

I made some progress over the weekend.
Installed the sound deadening material and layed the carpet on the floor still need to trim it. Started fab work on the glove box that houses the head unit for the stereo. Cut the back deck to install the (2) 6 x 9 speakers.

Was it more difficult to put the ram air in the center headlights (I'm assuming)? If you could make that work it would look good IMHO. Not that the current set up is bad.

Great choice on the color!

I agree the inside headlights would have looked better but I did not want to relocate the battery to the trunk on a daily driver.

Car is looking great. Can't wait to see it finished.
Have you been happy with the LS1? I'm leaning heavily that way. I was going to do a 455, but even with aluminum heads it would be way heavier than an LS engine. I know I'll catch grief from the Olds guys, but since I've already "ruined" the suspension and body ('67 front clip on a '66) I'm used to it.

You do what YOU want to do with your car. It is a little more work to ge tthat engine in the car...wiring, etc...but you will NOT regret it once it is in there. I swapped an LS1 into my '78 TA and NEVER regretted it for a second. Instant starts every time...it was fantastic.

Olds is looking mean btw...keep up the good work!

The LS1 is fast, reliable, & cheap. Pick 2

Does that answer your question?

Sorry the olds power plant can't compete with it. It is a no brainer if you are building a car to drive which I am. I mean drive across the USA and back without thinking about it. I put 10.5 k on mine the first year I had the engine in. Nothing wrong with big block power I still like the feel of it better out of the hole but thats about it. Doesn't really meet the needs of this ride a go anywhere do all driver. I don't want to just win the red light to red light drag race anymore, I want to hang in the corners as well. The coolest thing is just crusing along the interstate in the fast lane with modern vets and BMW's and pushing them to pick it up a notch your holding me up. After all I'm geared for the open road. I plan to go with V rated tires at some point. My next upgrade after finishing the cosmetics is to up grade the steering box and add upper adjustable control arms with better shocks Springs all around. My goal is to make this car handle as good as a gen iii iroc camaro. Honestly that is the best handling car I have ever owned. If I could get my cutlass to handle as good I would be more than happy with it.

Dude, you'll catch grief from the hardcore Olds guys regardless of what you do. I DID put a 455 BBO in my car, Project Olds, and they just ripped me apart. Mine is working great and the car is working great.

these are the same guys who lamented the passing of Olds but hadn't bought a new Olds in decades!
things change, but some guys can't deal w/ the new technology.

I have enjoyed following the buildup in PHR. It's also been fun to watch the people on the Olds sites reaction to it (not always the most positive).
I have always believed you should do whatever you want to your car because you want to, not because everybody else is doing it or what they might think of it. I have no use for people that have to rip apart every other car they look at. I see things on cars I wouldn't do in a million years but as long as they're not trying to do it to my car I could care. I drove my car 265 miles one way to visit some friends and go to a car show. The stock 350 Olds and Turbo 350 work great, but less weight, more HP and another gear (or 2 or 3) would definitely be nice. :)

Mingus

BTW, there were only about 5 other Oldsmobiles at the car show today out of around 400 cars. Seems like I'm seeing less and less of them lately.

Guys to each his own I say. After all it's still just hotrodding when you get to the meat and potatos of it. Personally if I owned just about any original true muscle car from the days past 442, ss chevelle, z28 , etc with original power train I would not touch it. Some will and thats ok too it is their ride not mine. I simply chose in my opinion the most economical bang for the buck drive train package available. That is a complete low miles LSx matching trans salvage setup. If you desire more power they are all great platforms to build from at minimal cost. The cost of putting a OD auto trans behind the stock 455 I had already delivered to the engine shop cost 2/3rds the cost of my complete drivetrain with fuel injection that I ended up putting in the car. That is the single reason I chose the LS1. So far I certainly have no regrets about it. They say the truck 6.0 engine trans setups are dirt cheap and they make tremendouss power with minimal modication. The most amazing thing is how really easy it is to wire many of these modern power trains into the classic cars & trucks of old.

Thanks all.

Here are just a few more little things completed and removed from the to do list.

Stereo located in fabbed glove box. I even have room left for legal papers etc...
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/06/DSC08808-1.jpg
New Alpines and kenwood amp hung under deck. Speakers will be completely hidden with a smooth black grill cover panel layed over them. The stereo equipment in the trunk is all but invisable when looking in it. I am not sure if I need to port the 6x9's using the entire trunk or adding a smaller ported box or boxes around them. I will determine once the rear seat is installed.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/06/DSC08754-1.jpg
Carpet layed and trimmed. very quality product I recieved from Opgi. Fit perfect with minimal trimming required. kick panels with speakers in place.

Here is a short video with the dash in action. http://s282.photobucket.com/albums/kk243/rockytoppers1/?action=view&current=MOV06596.flv

I still have the cad file to get one cut if you are interested. We can put just about any layout or logo you wish to have on it. I used auto meter guages in my case.

Here are a few pics of the build up. The red area will be black when finished. As you can see in the last picture I have painted the panel it self the same color as the car. Interior will be solid black. I had not intended on painting the oem chrome area around the instrument panel but the paint shop got their wires crossed and it is painted now. Considering the color I went with it shouldn't look to bad. So I let it slide.

I originally bought the car because it reminded me of my 66 chevelle I had in high school. I didn't know anything about the olds cutlass of the mid 60's. I was lead to believe it was a low miles original Texas car and I was to be the 3rd owner. I found out latter when I went to buy a radiator that it has a 64 front clip. I have even purchased a complete 65 front clip but honestly I like the 64 straight lines much better so I kept the 64 front. I agree the wheels may not be deep enought to handle the spinners. I was thanking they would be easy to do a custom logo on thow.

I have decided to go a different direction on the wheels. I'm going with the new rev classic 100 17x8 wheels with 255/45/17's on all for corners. I am also going to do my on custom center caps either with the words "LS1-F85" or maybe with the rocket olds logo like I have on the engine covers I made.

OPGI has your cars replacement dash and glove box on sale right now for 344.90$ Just hit the buy now button and put them away for when the time comes. http://www.opgi.com/product.asp?topcatid=193&chapterid=193&topvalue=&newflag=&VendorCode=&grpcode=16640&prodcode=

I am very pleased with the way the dash turned out. Compared to the cost to get a dash restore job done for this car I am very very happy. I have seen covered dashes in these cars before and they just looked cheap compared to the tight oem dash. I told my interior guy that I wanted a double saddle stitch(he calls it is a french seam) on my seat edges rather than the welded edge like oem. I also told him I wanted it done in the dash pad. It already looks great but he told me when once it gets out in the heat it will tihgten up even more. It was suppose to be black. Store continued at 6.......

Futher progress. We are getting real close now to being done first round anyhow. The exterior is now 100%complete (minus new wheels, tires and high perrformance undercarriage which is due in this week. The rest of the interior is also suppose to arrive this week. I hope to get the suspension and steering upgrades done next week if all the parts arrive on schedule.

The old door panel water boards made a great pattern for the new sound deadening mats.

Thanks all as for the tire orientation thanks on the heads up, my first directional tires. I am recovering from back surgery so I had my wife put that wheel on just so I could see how it looks. I have a guy coming today to mount all of them I will have him correct the issue.

As for the fat mat I am not sure. It defiantly works. I climbed in the car and layed on the floor after I covered the door panels still no interior. I started and rev'd the engine. I could barely hear the loud flow masters right underneath me. I mean my 60's hot rod sounds like a new car now. That may take getting use to not hearing the LS1 roar when I stomp on it.

Car looks awesome. How much Fatmat did you order? Any asphault smells?

No smells so far. I order the 100 sq ft kit I still have alot left. I am going to cover the watershield board behind the rear seat. I did not do any under the dash but plenty left over to do that also. My ceiling already has some oem deadening material or insulation on it so I am not going to be putting it there.
Thanks

What is your impression of those Rev wheels? How are they for fit and finish? They look great on your car and the price is definitely right!

That air vent is... interesting. Don't think I've seen anything quite like it before.

I am very happy with the fit and finish and in my case the color looks like it was painted with the car. I was looking at the summit legends but they looked to bluish to me. They had more options for offset and I really needed a 5 inch bs in the front but I wanted the america racing cap so it would be easy for me to fab some custom caps and just screw them on. These rub a bit in the front fender wells but I knew they would. The new SC&C suspionsion is suppose to improve the clearance some when setup to spec. We will see. If not I'm just going to tub out a section of the inner fender on the outbd side in the curve were it bottoms out when hitting bumps.

That air vent is... interesting. Don't think I've seen anything quite like it before. That is because I invented it just a few weeks ago. I call it the "FLO MO" vent. It sure does FLO MO, way MO than the oem duct did. I am happy with the a/c system now. I was driving around in 103 deg Texas weather the other day and was staying cool.

My My My its been a long time a comin! I know you have to be happy seeing it like this. I seriously doubt you realize this baby is really done yet.
The interior is so nice. The maroon is just right. A nice accent - not overwhelming the black. Clean man! Got that suspension in yet?
Congratulations, Rocky.

FYI it's alot harder to achieve in a 63 model but this guy managed it. http://ls1tech.com/forums/conversions-hybrids/1382430-1963-oldsmobile-f85-lq4-build-thread.html Good luck.

Thanks rockytopper, looks like it's quite a bit of work on a '63.

OK, don't want to hijack this thread so, back to the original thread.

Haven't done much to the cutlass lately other than drive the dog crap out of it. I did up grade the steering wheel. I should be 2 seconds faster now LOL. The one I had originally installed was more period correct but was so cheaply made the wood grain grip sections are loose and would pinch my hand during hard autox runs. I also installed a new column shifter knob. I tried to find an original but they don't make them and the originals are all plastic chrome toast. Not sure what I was thinking when I bought it online but when it arrived it look like something from the home depot kitchen facet display. So I did a liittle customizing on it looks much better now.
