Hi all, I am working on an engine swap and there is no way around the sway bar except having a new one made. Nothing fancy, just a 1" solid bar.
Do you know any companies that make one off bars?
There was a company out of Oregon, TLSsteel was their name. They made custom bars but I think they are out of business now.
Any info, Ideas are welcome.

Thanks. I did call Hellwig but they said it would take several months to get me one. Unfortunately, that would be too much time.
Does David Wheeler have a screen name here. Maybe I could PM him and see what he says. Thanks

We can do custom bars. We are backlogged with custom work until early July. I don't like to take anything on unless I can turn it around in a couple of weeks. Cost depends on complexity of the sway bar and the components. Most custom bars fall in the $350-$450 range and payment is required up front on any custom work. We can do tubular, solid, or heat treated chrome moly sway bars depending on what the customer needs.

Are you wanting a standard bar or a splined bar? Splined is usually the way to go since you can use an off the shelf bar and only need custom arms.

I gotta disagree with this. We offer both standard and splined bars, and I've come to the conclusion that a standard bar is every bit of capable as a splined bar...it also weighs less, is less complex, and far cheaper. I would only do a splined bar if I was really, really unsure of what stiffness I needed (hence the ability to swap bars), but even standard bars can be ordered with 3-position link ends.
I just don't want people to get the idea they need a splined bar.

I didn't say either was better than the other. In my experience when something custom is needed a splined bar is easier because you only need to fabricate the arms and maybe not even that. They are not necessarily heavier either since you can get a hollow splined bars and aluminum arms.
I agree that under normal circumstances a standard bar is better.

The swaybar will be the same as the stock one except the middle section will be dropped slightly to clear the oil pan.
I'll ask again. Any experiences dealing with Addco?

Have you looked at some other stock bars? For instance, the 4th gen f-body (at least later 98-02 LS1 cars) have a sway bar with a dropped center section.

If the bar is mounted hanging from the frame, then to clear oil pans I have actually made a one or two inch spacers to drop it as long as it doesnt cause other clearance issues.

That sucks, sorry, and good luck, I can't actually help, but I just wanted to say that I hate when companies can't either complete the work, or sack up and let you move on so you can get your work completed.
Judging by Dave's last post, you may want to give him another call, see where their backlog is at now.

So, can you share your experience? Because I am going to have to get one for the back of mine, and since I got a home fab'd TQ arm setup, I don't know of a stocker that will work.
Thanks

Really.. A splined bar only has steel on the spring portion, not the arms. The arms are aluminum and lighter.
And far cheaper??? Really.. I get torsion bars for 90 bucks. And good bars, speedway engineering. Many aftermarket companies buy their bars and re-sell them. Quality bar.
I have an air ride tech one piece bar and weighed it. It was heavier than the splined bar and aluminum arms I replaced it with. And Im not sure of the spring rate of the ART bar because it wasnt given. But I do know what the spring rate for my splined bar is cause it was a technical issue.
Im not trying to say there isnt a market for one piece bars. But I dont like the one bar fits all cars program. Just cause its made to fit doesnt mean its right for the specific car. Some folks want more than "it fits". I would think thats common here, its about performance here I think.
They wanna know what the rate is. So it fits for performance reasons, not just cause it physically fits.
And IMO some parts can be used because they physically fit. But some parts should fit for their use before ease of application.
Sway bars are springs. We talk alot about suspension springs here, get into detail about them. For a good reason. Well sway bars are springs also, they should be a detailed tuning tool, not just an after thought. One rate doesnt fit all. JR
