My build is a 1966 F100 Short Bed Custom Cab

Kind of a Sleeper Build but getting a infusion of MORE power, Better Brakes, Lower Ride Height, Updated Suspension, Tires & Wheels.

The wheels for now are going to be custom made steels until its back on the road and I can find a step up again for better brakes for a 5 on 5 wheel "OR" I can find brakes and go to 5 on 4 1/2. Once its on the road that will be the next step.

Engine is a 427 Side Oiler which will be displacing 482 Cubes
4.25 x 4.25.

Engine base is a new Genesis Block, 4.25 Stroker kit, CNC'd Edelbrock Heads, Custom Quick fuel carbs (750+cfm each). Intake manifold is a Factory Ford Tunnel Wedge Dual Quad. Oil Pan is a Custom 7qt Road Race Unit.

Trans is a 1969 428 Cobra Jet C-6 with a custom Converter

Rear is a 9" with a Yukon gear Posi Unit (tight version) Running 3:50 Gears

This is prior to teardown. Other pic links lost. Updating links. 4/8/18

A very long project. 1st pic my middle daughter who is getting married next weekend. Older daughter married with family. Where does the time go?

From outside and a quick view of interior it will look stock. With exception of being a fair amount lower along with tire wheel package.

Looks nice, those trucks had pretty impressive suspensions from the factory, at least for a truck. Are you planning any mods?

Looks nice, those trucks had pretty impressive suspensions from the factory, at least for a truck. Are you planning any mods?

Mods are: The 482" motor, adding 77 F150 power disc brakes, dropped I beams in the front, Power Steering.

Also plan on adding front and rear bars but have not figured out exactly what yet. I expect it to handle pretty well as you say for a
"truck". I will need help on chosing the proper sway bars. Not much made for these trucks in performance suspension or brakes.

I expect the weight to be around 3650lbs. My modern day shelby is 3900...
The engine is set back as far as I can get it without chopping the firewall. #1 plug is back of axle centerline which is good compared to most cars but still a truck. I would like to "track" it once its done then get into tuning the chassis.

Box floor had many small little dents. Started to shrink each one but decided to install new floor after finding out the 2008 Super Duty floor were near exact dimensions. 225 spot welds later...

Thanks! My dad brought a new 66 F100 home October of 1965 and I fell in love with them way back then. Its what I learned how to drive in and what I used. He then gave me the truck around 1984.

I actually bought them from Cam Research and they would not tell me who's they are... I would like to find out for sure if they are from Doug as have a few questions on setup.

The last photo is a bit of trick photography as my hand is actually in a pocket I build for just that. The truck oil adaptor has the filter pointing out but did not want to have a major oil spill each time I removed the filter.

Also had to notch the frame for the road race type "T" oil pan.

Andre, Yes you would be correct. I had just dropped the engine and trans along with the cab back on to chassis and jumped the gun taking the pic.
Also the engine is not level in the pic but it was the best pic I had to show the build. Thanks all for the kind words.

A couple pics when I was leveling it up.
The mounts are still not bolted up at this point, the cab is not 100% squared either. Kind of a test fit to make sure is all ok. Brake booster is only 1/4" from valve cover less gasket so I need to make a wedge for it etc. The intake manifold is also just sitting there... The tailshaft-rear needs to go to drivers side by about 1/2. crossmember not bolted in yet...

Its really a struggle trying to do everything yourself. Especially when dropping in the engine/trans or installing/removing the cab or bed along with a zillion other tasks. Its taking a long time trying to do it all myself to save $$ as do not have the funds to farm anything out. That includes, engine, trans, body & paint, interior etc. Also the weather here really sucks so doing any blasting, painting etc has to be on a few and far between nice day. Last night it was down well below freezing and its getting close to the end of May! lol

After 10yrs of looking and debating with myself on wheel choice & purchasing a custom set of wheels I liked but not my real choice but by $$ I have finally found a set of wheels to go on the truck and to fit the rest of my theme.

A email was sent to Schott wheels to see if they could do it in a 5 on 5 bolt pattern. Its simply amazing the fast and personal response I rec'd this morning from Dave at Schott Wheels.

I still need to determine exact sizing, spacing etc but need a little help.

I now have a 15" wheel with major caliper clearance issues along with being very heavy. I was thinking on going to 17x10 & 17 x 8's. Also the 15" has such a poor tire selection.

I need a little help as I plan on Autocross with this truck.

I am afraid a 18" wheel would look too big? This is the wheel in question. Whats a good all around tire to use with autox in mind too?

This is the wheel. A pic from Dave and hope it is ok to use. Thanks Dave! I really appreciate all the time you have taken so far to help out especially when other companies just laughed at me.

Its looking like 18's. I just need to sort out which tires to use etc. I also need more wheel to fit the bigger brakes.

A few pics. Wheel I was going to use to try to stay within my 25k budget
This is a 10" x 15 Steel with NOS OEM Hubcap. Wheel would have been powdercoated or painted body color (orange)

Next is a 18" x 9 put in place to see what it would look like. I think the 18's would be as large a wheel as I would use. Total height is 1" taller than other tire pictured 25.5 vs 26.5. I still need to figure out exactly which tires and wheels to use.

Another issue I ran into is the I beams. The DJM's were absolute junk (the silver splatter paint version) The dark/black are current AIM's.

Turns out the AIM's are giving me 2"+ additional track throwing off all my measurements which came from the stock beam.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Here you can see how crappy the DJM beams were. Welded together so crooked and the main part where kingpin is is just plates tacked together along with having .050" of slop in pins. Also there was no caster built in and was different side to side. Sent em' back as scrap.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Once the truck is mostly done the rear end will have to be re-visited as started out with a stock 427 making 425hp. Add 50% more HP to that and now I will most likely change center and axles to ensure no issues. A simple deal once the rest is completed.

This is an awesome build. My first truck(vehicle) was a '66 except it was a long bed and black with a white roof. It also had the 300 I6 but the previous owner I bought it from gave me a 352FE to put in it's place. Needless to say I sold it before I ever installed that motor. Too bad, I still kick myself for getting rid of it.

Thanks All!

Lets just say the power is something north of 600hp...

The cam is a Custom Grind (street) solid roller. Fairly heavy truck with estimate around 3600-3750lbs the cam is made for T O R Q U E .. Powerband should be pretty stout from 2000 up to 6200. (comp ration of 10.6 to 1) Do not plan on turning it past 6500rpm. With a cam change it would probably gain 100hp but want driveability. I expect the truck to run 11's in the 1/4 when done. Also hope it will do well in autox for a truck.

I had BIG plans for past couple weeks for some more body work and paint but ended up pulling the 352 out of my 65 F250 to fix some oil leaks. Ended up going thru the engine to make it fresh again. Now I am debating to pull the front clip and do the engine bay because the engine
detail is making the bay look bad. LOL It always starts out as a carb rebuilt and escalates from there!

The 66 482 project is where my heart is but just so much other stuff to do. Hard to keep up with it all. Closing in on it though as just finished a major project yesterday.

I have been away from home for nearly a month and 2 months on another project. It was Just today when I emailed Dave @ Schott wheels to say I am ready to go on the wheels.

I recently sold my KR and also my '32 3w coupe. Trying to clear out so I can get serious about finishing this truck. With only 1 project to deal with instead of a bunch it should make things much more simple.

Today was first time since my last post I had time to even think about this project. Amazing someone should ask the same day I decide to go at it again!

We have had our house for sale for nearly 4yrs and today had a little nibble. If that happens it will be panic mode trying to get things done in short order before a move because I may not be blessed with such a nice home shop setup at the next place. I promise more very soon.

A couple of the current almost done project a ORIGINAL PAINT 1965 Deluxe Camper Special which I pulled the engine on Memorial Day to fix a couple oil leaks. Like most projects I get my hands into they balloon to major projects.

Its been far too long since I had a chance to work on this project but today was the day! Hopefully now I can keep at it for a while.

Finally got the solid roller lifters and custom pushrods. Installed along with the intake, rockers have to be shimmed for proper alignment with valve stem and to make sure the pushrods clear the holes in intake manifold.

Valves are now adjusted, oil added and primed. Hopefully within the next couple weeks I can fire it... A couple pics of todays progress.

I am getting a tad excited to say the least as this has been a dream since 1966.

Oh Wow, Going on 6 years since a update. Had some major issue's with PhotoBucket, All the pic links were lost. Thought I would revive this thread as so much has happened since.

In next week will try to figure out how to replace the lost links.

Our Spokane house sold February of 2011. Moved into apartment. Made the move back to Phoenix stayed in a rental with no room for projects. Then finally bought a house in Phoenix with a decent yard but crappy garage. It has taken a long time to get going again. Then health issue's kicked in. Lost nearly 6 years. I now have 2 other MAJOR projects I have started.

This is what the '66 427 Project truck looks like now.

Just over 18 years since I last drove this truck! No $ time or health issues have really put a damper on this project.

I was finally able to get the truck out of another long time storage and slowly trying to finish the truck for my Middle daughters wedding mid April. Although still plagued with continued health issues have made some progress.

I was able to have Baer Racing make me up a custom set of 14" 6 Piston brakes for the project and they are now installed although still have to run the brake lines and hook up the E-brakes.

Almost forgot the best upgrade!

I ordered a pair of these wheels from Schott! Hope they look as good on truck as I envision! Expecting them to be done in next 2-3 weeks as a 6-7 week turnaround.

I had to change bolt pattern on truck with a lot of custom parts just to get these wheels.

Front wheels are 18 x 8 and will be getting Continental Extreme Contact Sport 245/45ZR18 Tires
Rear Wheels are 18 x 10 and will get Continental Extreme Contact Sport 285/40ZR18's About the largest I can do and still have proper clearance.

C & C Alum Block
Bryant Billet Crank
Carrillo Rods
Kaase B9 Heads
Custom Turbo's
Finally have all pieces to get going on engine.

Wish It would have gone in this truck but too buried in this 482" FE to change now.

1st attempt at uploading pics directly from computer. Making very very slow progress. Things always take 10x longer than I think. Truck as is weight 3239 lbs. Exhaust, Brakes, Tire/wheel package along with the Gear Vendors OD added a lot of weight. Looking like curb will be around 3650 lbs or so

Within 100 of the 3239? or projected done weight of 3650? It may even end up 3750 a lot of weight to add yet.

Fenders etc not much but by the time I add tailgate, Grille, bumpers, fluids, fuel tank it will get up there. SHould have gone with a aluminum block . .

wfo guy

3239. The 32 has a 9" rear with Mark vi discs that are real heavy. The 51 has a 8.8 rear with light calipers and discs. The 32 also has an alum. flywheel. :) The 51 sits on a custom chassis that I fabbed out of 2 x 6 and 2 x 4 rectangle tubing. They both have a metal bed floor that is similar to a 70's series F100. Your engine surely has 200 lbs on the 4.6 and 100 on the 302. :)

ProjectSideOiler
04-08-2018, 10:11 AM
My engine was under 500 lbs. Don't let all that "painted" aluminum fool you . . That's lighter than a 4.6. A stock 352/390 is only 625. The FE engines are not as heavy as most think.

Was able to drive it down road for first time Thanksgiving Day!

Bit of a update where it's at right now. Still need to add remaining trim, finish up interior, wiring for GV OD but oh so close! after a 40+ yr wait its looking like a truck once again. Takes a long time doing it all myself with help from friends vs farming anything out.

New project may not be much interest in the "truck" but some may like the Engine. All Aluminum Boss 429 based 540" but with twin turbo's. Dialed down it should make around 1500 flywheel. Parts all good to 3000 hp but injectors only good for around 2450. Should make 1500 on fairly low boost.

Engine now fitted to truck. Next up is to build the custom stainless manifolds/headers to mount the turbos.

First time using new phone app.

So much has happened once again.

Machine shop ruined the FE block for my 410 FEbuild along with my last 2 FE blocks.

Time to start from scratch once again.

I bought a wrecked 2018 F150 with the GEN3 5.0 Coyote 10 spd from Auction but was such minimal damage I fixed it in a couple days. Long story.

After putting on 5k mi in just 3months I decided the low rpm power was just not there.

Being used to big block power and after a bunch of searching I heard rumors Ford Performance released 5 450 hp 510 TQ Raptor 3.5 crate engines. I was able to purchase engine #4!

With just a basic tune it should put down 500 HP and 550 TQ to the tires. Plan is to use the 10 spd auto and stock PCM.

I am signed up for both the show and ProTouringTruckShhotout
Continuous health issues have really slowed the process but still hoping to have it on road
By then.

No clue what to expect as main purpose of truck is long distance cruising.

All stock suspension with added front sway bar plus brake upgrade.
